Kangaroos stomachs contain different bacteria
By Richard Black
BBC science correspondent Scientists in Australia are investigating whether kangaroos could help combat global warming. Australia's sheep and cattle produce huge amounts of methane, an important greenhouse gas - but kangaroos do not. Researchers believe it might be possible to use bacteria found in the stomachs of kangaroos to reduce methane output from cows and sheep. Methane emissions from farm animals account for about 15% of Australia's greenhouse gas production. Yet kangaroos, feeding on the same sorts of grass, produce no methane at all. Mystery bacteria It is all down to the bacteria in their stomachs which help process the food they eat. Farm animals make 15% of Australia's greenhouse gases
The stomach is basically a big fermentation tank, with lots of hydrogen in the frothy mix; sheep and cattle bacteria turn that hydrogen into methane, whereas kangaroo bacteria do something else with it.

Macropodids are found in Australia, New Guinea, and on some nearby islands. Members of this family are of medium to large size (0.5 - 90 kg). Their posture is plantigrade . They have long, narrow hind feet and powerful hind limbs. The fourth toe of the hind foot is the longest and strongest. It lies in a line with the main limb elements and transmits the thrust of hopping (this toe is secondarily somewhat reduced in rock wallabies and tree kangaroos). The outside (fifth) toe is also large. As is true of all members of their order (and members of the order Peramelemorphia as well), macropodids are

Giant Kangaroos.
Next day, the brothers changed themselves into giant kangaroos, and decided to kill Thoorkook and his savage dogs. They hopped about in sight of Thoorkook's camp, and, when the dogs scented them, they gave chase. With great bounds the kangaroos hopped away, and the dogs followed, but one ran faster than the rest. When it was a long way from the pack, the kangaroos turned, and one of them struck the dog a heavy blow with its paw, which ripped the body from head to tail. They then carried the body and threw it in a deep water hole. The kangaroos continued to hop away, and the dogs followed fast; red foam flecked their mouths and lolling tongues, the cruel white fangs glistened in the sun, their lean sides panted, and the noise of their deep, hoarse barking echoed through the bush like distant thunder. One dog again ran faster than the rest in this relentless chase. The kangaroos ran slower, as though they were growing tired, and, when the leading dog came within striking distance, they suddenly turned, and, with one swift stroke, ripped it from end to end. This terrible hunt continued until one by one the dogs were killed. The kangaroos again changed themselves into men and went to Thoorkook's camp to kill him. When he saw them approaching he seized his weapons and prepared to fight. They, however, made the sign of peace by placing their spears in the ground, and he did likewise.

KANGAROOS - Where do they come from? Why the pouch? Why do they hop? How fast are they? Did they evolve from some other animal?
K angaroos are the symbol of Australia. They appear on Australian postage stamps, coins, and even on their airplanes.
Large joey, ready to leave the pouch
Kangaroos vary enormously in size. The tiny, scampering musky rat-kangaroo lives in the tropical rain forests of northern Queensland (Australia). A huge kangaroo called Procoptodon is now extinct.
Caring for the babies
Why the pouch? Carrying the baby in the pouch is convenient for the female, who may travel many miles for fresh food and water. The youngster stands a greater chance of survival because it does not have to keep up with her. The baby is tucked away, safe from predators. Another incredible thing about kangaroos is that the mother (called a doe) can determine the sex of her babies. How she does this is unknown, but she tends to put off bearing males until she is older. Males move away after about two years, but females stay with their mothers longer and benefit from mother's help more. The joey is born after a gestation period of about 35 days (depending on the species) and in the largest species is the size of a human thumb nail. In the smallest, it is only the size of a rice grain. Naked, blind and deaf, it must make its way unaided from the birth canal to the pouch.

Melbourne, Australia - More than a dozen kangaroos have been found beheaded in the outer suburbs of the southern city of Melbourne over the past three weeks, sparking a call by wildlife officials on Tuesday for more information. Deb Ganderton, an official in the Nillumbik Shire, said most of the bodies had been badly decomposed or burned, and the lack of intact remains was hampering investigations into the deaths by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or RSPCA, and the state parks and conservation departments.

Martha Down Under: Kangaroos in the Courtroom
by William L. Anderson and Candice E. Jackson, March 15, 2004 For all of the supposed high drama the Martha Stewart case produced, in the end, it was all quite anticlimactic. According to Time Magazine Of course, the writers at Time Time To Kill a Mockingbird. This was not because of the evidence, as the government sycophants from Time and the New York Times have told their readers. As we have noted in another article it will open the door to defense evidence the conduct was not illegal. New York Times (By the way, the Times On a number of occasions defense attorneys attempted to broach the subject of insider trading in order to demonstrate that Stewart did not engage in that illegal practice. Each time lawyers tried to educate the jury, Judge Cedarbaum cut them short, in violation of her own pre-trial ruling. In other words, the government was permitted to allege insider trading, even though it had filed no criminal charges for that alleged violation, yet the defense was not permitted to respond. not assaulted. However, the judge permits the prosecution to continue its accusations while not permitting the defense to introduce its exculpatory evidence.

To many people, the suggestion that a kangaroo could live up a tree is fantasy. Yet, in the rainforests of Far North Queensland and New Guinea, there are extraordinary kangaroos that do just that. Many aspects of these marsupials' anatomy and biology suggest a terrestrial kangaroo ancestor. Yet no one has, so far, come forward with a convincing explanation of how, why and when mammals that was so superbly adapted for life on the ground should end up back in the trees.
This book reviews the natural history and biology of tree-kangaroos from the time of their first discovery by Europeans in the jungles of West Papua in 1826 right up to the present day, covering the latest research being conducted in Australian and New Guinea. Combining information from a number of disparate disciplines, the author sets forth the first explanation of this apparent evolutionary conundrum.
