Introduction
Task Process Evaluation ... Conclusion Introduction G'Day mates! You have been chosen to help your school choose a new mascot. One classroom has been selected from each grade to research a specific animal. You have been assigned the kangaroo. It is your job to learn everything there is to know about kangaroos using many resources at school. When your research is complete, you will present your kangaroo research at an all school assembly. After each selected class presents their research every student in the school will have an opportunity to vote for his/her choice at the end of the assembly.
Back Home

The Task Here's how our Kanga Adventure will begin:
  • First, make a KWL list about kangaroos with your classmates. Next, make a list of resources that are available at school to help with this project. Use the "Did You Know" Fact Cards to help keep information organized. Write information carefully on Fascinating Kangaroo Fact Sheet. Create a picture of each kangaroo.

Its pages were thick with drawings of monsters and houses and birds, and he added a little figure, neither human nor animal: blobs linked by bars, with a knifeblade of a nose and the most engaging smile. Salazar squinted at it. "It's funny that was one of those moments where I'm not trying to think of an idea, which is when I think they come out the easiest."

TEACHERS' NOTES
Background
This is a very widely known puzzle that exists in many variations in many countries. (eg: 'Frogs on lily pads', 'Mountain goats on a trail', etc). To solve it requires a systematic approach to the movement of the 'kangaroos', and the patterns of moves yields a fascinating quadratic relationship. Students are encouraged to work out the number of moves required for different numbers of discs and to look for patterns as the number of discs increases. This allows them to make predictions for even higher numbers of 'kangaroos' on either side. It is a great puzzle, but it becomes mathematically richer when the underlying algebra behind the moves can be explicitly recognised and explored.
Features
  • A physical introduction
For a whole class setting it can be a fun way to introduce the problem by setting up 7 chairs and having three pupils on each side (boys and girls?) representing the 'kangaroos'.
  • Systematic movement
The problem can be difficult, especially if you start with three or four on each side. Solving the simpler puzzle of just one on each side and then two can show the logic of the moves necessary for higher numbers on each side.

Australia’s a holiday destination like no other. Unique animals like koalas and kangaroos are understandably on a tourist’s must-see list, as are the oft-photographed Sydney Harbour Bridge and the red glow of Uluru (Ayers Rock). But for those who travel all that distance, there are countless other incredible sights to see. The Sydney Harbour Bridge and red Ayers Rock are well-known symbols of the Land Down Under, and every tourist comes home from Australia with a collection of photographs of kangaroos and koalas. But there are hundreds of other things to see and do in Australia: swim with dolphins, walk around in the red desert, or even watch penguins returning to their homes at night.
          In and Around Sydney
Everyone knows Sydney, but not everybody knows that “The Rocks” area in the center of Sydney is a real-life walkthrough of where the city started. Back on 26 January 1788, this was the place where sailors from the First Fleet landed and established the first British settlement. This day is celebrated every year as Australia Day, although it is now also remembered that Australia has been inhabited for much longer than this two hundred odd years, with the Aboriginal people having lived in Australia for many thousands of years. “The Rocks” includes many historical buildings that are well preserved and cared for, although they are now usually operating as bars or caf©s rather than old shops. Millions of tourists and locals alike visit “The Rocks” every year, and the area is easy to find as it’s next to the ferry docks and that famous coat hanger, the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Animal Info - Index by Groups of Animals
This index groups animals which either are taxonomically related (e.g. Cats) or have similar names (e.g. Shrews, Elephant Shrews, and Tree Shrews (all found under "Shrews")). (This index is aimed at the non-technical reader and does not necessarily follow taxonomic groupings.) Each species is listed under only one common name and appears only once in this index, as opposed to the Species Index , where all common names and all scientific names known to us for each species are listed. Common names generally follow (*P) indicates that there are one or more links to pictures of the animal in the "Profile" section at the top of its web page.

Local Wildlife Kangaroos and Quokkas Visitors who appreciate a natural flavour to their holiday should head to Western Australia – the state is literally teeming with abundant and diverse wildlife, and our magnificent national forests and parks provide excellent animal-spotting opportunities.
Hopping along with the iconic kangaroo
Western Australia’s kangaroos are enjoyed as much by locals as they are by those travelling through the state.
There are two main species – western grey kangaroos (the most common) and the famous red kangaroo or “Blue Flyer”.
The red kangaroo is the largest marsupial in the world. Often growing bigger than a man, this species can reach heights in excess of six feet and weigh more than 80 kilograms. They prefer a more arid climate to the western greys, so visit the state’s desert outback regions for a guaranteed sighting.

Show me where
Spot western grey kangaroos munching on their early morning breakfast grasses alongside bush tracks or on our plentiful golf course fairways. They tend to fancy hopping along the open greens.
You can also catch sight of these powerful marsupials crossing roads in rural areas, so keep watch for them during your travels into the Western Australian countryside.

    http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/~fourth_crossing/short_term_care_kangaroos.ht
Short Term Care for Kangaroos It is important that an injured, sick or orphaned native animal be transferred to an experienced carer as soon as possible (such as WIRES, Fauna Rescue or a veterinarian). The guidelines below are provided for short term care only. It is important to remember that an injured, sick or orphaned kangaroo, as with any wild animal, will be stressed when caught. It is very important that it is kept in a dark, quiet place, away from children and family pets. Injured adult kangaroos should never be approached by inexperienced handlers. Kangaroos have powerful hind legs with very sharp claws which can cause severe injury if the kangaroo is frightened and kicks out. The claws on their fore legs are also incredibly sharp - and beware - kangaroos know how to "box" and you will more than likely be the loser if one decides to fight you. It is advisable to stay away from an injured adult kangaroo and to call a licensed wildlife organisation (ie: WIRES). Kangaroo joeys are extremely difficult to care for as they are prone to stress which can kill them quickly. An experienced carer is urgently needed and you should call a wildlife organisation or take the joey to the nearest veterinarian.

KEPTICISM is not my forte. Still, when I planned a visit to the Kangaroo Conservation Center in the small town of Dawsonville, Ga., last June, I wasn't convinced that the experience would be worth the ticket price or the four-hour drive from my home in Charlotte, N.C. What if this turned out to be a mere roadside zoo or only a quick glimpse of the animals promised in the brochure? Having never been Down Under, how could I gauge the "only such wildlife park outside of Australia"? What's more, menacing thunderstorms that had ravaged the muggy Southeast for several days were reportedly headed my way. I quickly discovered my doubts were unfounded. No touristy signs lead the way to the 87-acre wildlife preserve at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains an hour north of Atlanta. An eight-foot fence skirts the property, keeping dogs and coyotes at bay. Admittance is granted after pressing a button at the gate.

Dubya's Week: Attack of the Robocop Kangaroos
5 June 2004 by Malcolm Drury Verbatim highlights of the daily journal of George W. Bush for the week of May 30 to June 5, 2004. With the weight of the world's problems pressing on his shoulders, our good friend is often confused, but this week his state of confusion seemed to be higher than usual. Could it be because of his excitement at the possibility of seeing Cherie Blair again?
    Monday 31 May
Looks like another problem brewing at the offiss, seems Cheney might have been letting contracts to Hallyburton in Iraq according to Time maggezine. I phoned him and said is it true and he said it's better for you not to know and I said don't start that again, I've had enough of you telling me that, I want to know everything that your doing from now on. So he said OK, for brekfast this morning I had toast and bacon and eggs and two cups of coffee, and I'm wearing blue socks and a white shirt, tell me what else you want to know and I'll get back to you, then he hung up. He's getting wierder and wierder.

    Living with Kangaroos
Free ranging eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) are an integral part of Canberra's 'bush capital' ambience. With a reduction through time in natural predation and an increase in grassland areas, the population of kangaroos in the ACT has increased. Population surveys have shown that the densities of eastern grey kangaroos on some areas of public land in the ACT have been among the highest reported for any kangaroo species anywhere in Australia. Living with kangaroos creates unusual management challenges. The ACT Kangaroo Advisory Committee has produced a detailed report containing a number of recommendations about managing kangaroos on ACT public land. The Government has adopted these recommendations. Click here to view the ACT Kangaroo Advisory Committee Reports.
