Herbivores Kangaroo Size Life Span Kangaroo If you always thought of the kangaroo as one of a kind, you would be surprised to know that it belongs to a large family with as many as 56 species! The six larger species are called kangaroos and wallaroos while the smaller ones are called rat kangaroos, potoroos, tree kangaroos, pademelons and wallabies.
How do you identify the different large kangaroos? By their noses! A wallaroo's nose has a large black bare patch around it. A red kangaroo has a smaller, boomerang-shaped black bare patch on its nose. The grey kangaroo's nose is covered with hair except for narrow bare bands around the nostrils.

Photo courtsey Roger Birkel, The Baltimore Zoo. Red Kangaroo Scientific Name: Macropus rufus Home: The open arid plains and woodlands of central Australia Description: Long, hind, hoppin' limbs, short arms, large heavy tail, red fur on backs of males, gray fur on females, white furred bellies on both. Red kangaroos are famous for their hoppin' style and being the biggest marsupials around. Herbivores that graze mostly on grass, the red kangaroo congregates in groups of up to ten to feed together. These groups are based more on being in the same place than close family ties. Mother and joey stick together for years after the baby has left mama's pouch. Joeys are born as small, bean-sized hairless babies that climb up and into the safety of the pouch. That's where he continues to grow. After 33 weeks, a joey becomes too big to be carried around, but many try to climb back in until they get the message from mom that taxi-time is over! At top-speed kangaroos may make 12 foot leaps and reach a velocity of 30 mph! Even a lazy, SLOW hop can be as far as six feet! The long, heavy, and powerful kangaroo tail makes it all possible by providing balance and stability. Only tree kangaroos move their hind feet independently of one-another. The red kangaroo can't walk, it only hops! Bucks, or male kangaroos, aren't much for fighting to protect the herd when trouble comes, the whole herd scatters off in all directions! But when it comes to breeding rights, bucks KICKBOX! The two opponents clasp arms and try to kick each other in the belly!

NATURE invites viewers to share the inspiring beauty and harsh realities of survival in the land of the BIG RED ROOS.
They box and wrestle, kick with authority, and cover large patches of ground with powerful leaps. In fact, the red kangaroos of Australia's Outback are among the finest athletes of the animal world. And that's just as well, since the Outback presents one of the most challenging environments on the planet.
Some of the hardships kangaroos must learn to endure are summer temperatures reaching more than 140 degrees Fahrenheit; persistent drought that's occasionally interrupted by deadly floods; powerful eagles that swoop down from the skies; lethal parasites borne by mosquitoes; and the ever-present danger of hungry dingos. Moreover, the rising human demand for kangaroo meat does little to brighten life expectancy for members of future generations. Yet kangaroos thrive by the millions. BIG RED ROOS provides an incisive look at how they survive, by following the adventures of a small group, which includes a mother and the young joey she must do her best to protect.

Shoot Me Kangaroo Down, Sport Claim: Australian programmers added armed kangaroos to a military defense simulation program. Status: True. Example: [Collected on the Internet, 1999]
Mutant Marsupials Take Up Arms Against Australian Air Force The reuse of some object-oriented code has caused tactical headaches for Australia's armed forces. As virtual reality simulators assume larger roles in helicopter combat training , programmers have gone to great lengths to increase the realism of the their scenarios, including detailed landscapes and in the case of the Northern Territory's Operation Phoenix herds of kangaroos (since groups of disturbed animals might well give away a helicopters position). The head of the Defense Science and Technology Organization's Land Operations/Simulations division reportedly instructed developers to model the local marsupials' movements and reaction to helicopters. Being efficient programmers, they just re-appropriated some code originally used to model infantry detachments reactions under the same stimuli, changed the mapped icon from a soldier to a kangaroo, and increased the figures' speed of movement. Eager to demonstrate their flying skills for some visiting American pilots, the hotshot Aussies "buzzed" the virtual kangaroos in low flight during a simulation. The kangaroos scattered, as predicted, and the Americans nodded appreciatively

So you've heard all about Kangaroos and you're wondering if you'll get to see them on your AUSSIE WALKABOUTS trip. Well the simple answer is YES! Kangaroos are very common in Australia and in some places are considered a pest. In western Australia for example, driving at night on the many highways is a dangerous occupation as kangaroos tend to bound across the road at a moments notice. Sometimes they become mesmerised by the headlights of oncoming cars can just sit there waiting for you to crash into them! Some of the larger kangaroos can do serious damage to a car and it's occupants if they collide at high speeds, it's because of this that many people opt to use what are known as roo bars. Essentially a roo bar is a metal grid that is put in front of the car to take the brunt of the force should you collide with a kangaroo. The scientific name for Kangaroos and Wallabies is ' Macropods' this means 'big foot' they are Marsupials which means they have pouches and they are Mammals which means they produce milk for their babies. Kangaroos usually live in family groups called Mobs. These Mobs can be as large as 100, many of the smaller Wallabies and Kangaroo Rats live alone.

A male kangaroo is called a boomer
A female kangaroo is called a flyer
A baby kangaroo is called a joey When European explorers first saw these strange hopping animals they asked a native Australian (aborigine) what they were called. He replied "kangaroo" meaning "I don't understand" your question. The explorers thought this was the animal's name. And that's how the kangaroo got its name... A Kangaroo is a marsupial mammal. It is a macropod which means "big foot". There are over 40 different types (species) of Kangaroo.
The smaller ones are usually called Wallabies. The largest is the Red Kangaroo.
It stands taller than a man and can weigh 85 kg's. It is the largest marsupial in the world. On the Australian coat of arms the Emu and the Kangaroo were selected as symbols of Australia to represent the country progress because they are always moving forward and never move backwards.

Lumholtz's Tree-Kangaroo:
Conserving a rare marsupial
We know a great deal about the koala and other cute creatures of Australia, but tree-kangaroos are elusive animals that keep well hidden in the rainforest canopy and have maintained a degree of mystique. Tree-kangaroos are rare where they exist in the tropical rainforests of Australia and New Guinea, relying on the fragile and swiftly diminishing tropical rainforest environment for their survival. As land continues to be cleared for crops and grazing, it is important to understand their ecology so we can conserve these rare arboreal marsupials. How does the tree-kangaroo respond and adjust to changes in its environment, such as land clearing, and which specific dangers pose the greatest threat to its survival?
Graeme Newell began his search for answers during a post-doctoral fe llowship at CSIRO's Tropical Forest Research Centre in Atherton, Queensland. His study focussed on Lumholtz's Tree-kangaroo

There are at least 65 species of 'kangaroos', with most being found in Australia, and a small, but unique, assortment in New Guinea. Despite the varied range of forms, there is a common body plan to all members of this group. They are often referred to as the 'macropods' from the scientific name of the superfamily, which translates from the Greek to mean 'big -footed' (Egerton 1997). This term describes one of their most defining and distinctive characteristics; long toes on big feet, on the end of strong hindlegs. This physical feature allows, especially in the larger species, for a fast and efficient hopping gait. In contrast, the arms and hands are generally much shorter and weaker. Historically, there have been many different families of kangaroos. Some of these contained members that were probably carnivorous in habit (Archer et al 200). All living macropods, however, are essentially herbivorous, the smaller ones being a little more omnivorous, and the larger ones being more standard grazers (Stahan 1998). All of the extant species belong to two families; the smaller, more primitive potoroids ('rat kangaroos', 'potoroos', 'bettongs'), and the generally larger and more recently evolved macropodids (kangaroos and various wallabies).
