Primus expected to play Kangaroos
Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams says he is confident captain Matthew Primus will be fit to play the Kangaroos at Manuka Oval in Canberra on Sunday, despite suffering from an apparent leg injury. Both Primus and defender Josh Mahoney (knee injury) have been in doubt for the round 18 AFL clash, a match the Power need to win if they are to remain in contention for the finals. The reigning premiers are currently in 10th place on the AFL ladder, two points outside the top eight. Williams said the availability of Primus was crucial to the Power's hopes of defeating the Kangaroos due to his recent good form. "Matty's played every game this year and I think he was almost our best player last week, so we are pretty happy with how he's been going," he said. Print Email

Ask a person to think of something totally Australian and he or she will usually pick the kangaroo, the best known of the marsupial animals, which have pouches, or marsupia, to feed and carry their young. Some marsupials are found in North and South America, but Australia, with 120 species, has a much wider variety. The most specialized forms, like the herbivorous kangaroos (family Macropodidae) and opossums (family Phalangeridae), are peculiar to Australia and obviously originated from the more generalized carnivorous types, some of which exist in the Americas.
The best known of the Australian kangaroos is the red (or plains) kangaroo. Big Red, or Old Man Red, is depicted on the Australian coat of arms. He is the biggest of the kangaroos. The male has bright wine-red coloring and the female is smoky-blue. The females, or Blue Fliers, can travel up to 48 kilometres an hour (30 miles per hour), or move at almost the same speed as a racing greyhound. The red kangaroos are widely distributed over the plains of Australia, but they are not usually found where the rainfall exceeds 63 centimetres (25 inches a year).
The kangaroo has stunted forelimbs but elongated hind legs, which give it great strength and speed in leaping along. Its big tail is used for balance or for pushing its body along slowly while grazing. It is believed that the red kangaroo can exist without free water by extracting moisture from the grass it eats. Reds feed mainly at dusk and do not seem to have any definite group structure. They can be found in groups of from 2 to over 100. The grey kangaroo, however, usually moves in groups of up to 20. The greys are probably the most familiar of the kangaroos as they inhabit areas closer to civilization than the others do.

Australia's kangaroos
Kangaroos are native to the Australian continent and to parts of Papua New Guinea. Most species are only found in Australia. There are over 60 different species of kangaroo and their close relatives. All kangaroos belong to the super-family Macropodidae (or macropods, meaning 'great-footed'). The macropod family includes kangaroos, wallabies, wallaroos, pademelons, tree-kangaroos and forest wallabies. These species are also found in Papua New Guinea. Species in the macropod family vary greatly in size and weight, ranging from 0.5 kilograms (1.1 pounds) to 90 kilograms (200 pounds). The Potoroinae (potoroid) family of kangaroos includes the potoroo, bettong and rat-kangaroo. This family of kangaroos lives only in Australia.

New feature: Killing for Kicks The largest massacre of land animals on the planet takes place in Australia each year. Millions of adult kangaroos are shot for their meat and skins. Millions of orphaned baby joeys, "worthless" to the industry, are shot, stamped on, clubbed over the head or abandoned to die. Help us stop the bloodshed. Every person can make a massive difference to global conservation. Simply never purchase wildlife - including kangaroo - products!

When the Australian continental plate separated from Antarctica and began drifting north 64 to 136 million years ago, only its higher elevations protruded above the ocean, comprising a patchwork of isolated tropical islands. As their climate cooled and dried, and ocean levels fell, they formed a continent blanketed by large patches of grasslands.

Periodically, reports of kangaroos wallabies , or their accompanying footprints have been made in places where one would not expect them - in other words, anywhere besides Australia and its surrounding islands. While generally scoffed at by the scientific community, several photographs of the " phantom kangaroos " are considered genuine by some. Some explanations put forth are escaped zoo or circus animals, or publicity stunts by local businesses using photographs from Australia. There is at least one verifiable example of a population of wild wallabies outside Australasia. Since World War II there has a been a colony of red-necked wallabies in the Peak District in England , the descendants of wallabies from a private zoo. The population reached about 50, but their numbers plunged during the severe winter of , and they were believed to have become extinct in the late There was a claimed sighting in . However, there are reports of dozens of other wallabies living in the wild in Britain, having escaped from zoos or private collections. Another example reaches back even farther into the past.
