Coffey: 'Resounding triumph for the Department of Justice'
Legal analyst Kendall Coffey Story Tools (CNN) Lifestyle guru Martha Stewart was convicted Friday of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and making false statements to investigators. Immediately after the guilty verdicts were announced, legal analyst Kendall Coffey described to CNN anchor Kyra Phillips what the verdicts could mean for Stewart and for her company, Martha Stewart Omnimedia. PHILLIPS: Let's talk about each one of those counts and what this means now for the domestic diva. COFFEY: Well, conspiracy, two counts, false statement, obstruction of justice. It means she's not going to be in a significant role again in a publicly traded company. It means that, unless this is somehow undone on appeal, she's a felon and she's going to prison. There's going to be a whole separate process in terms of what that sentence might be, but it's not going to be probation. It's not even likely to be a "Club Fed" kind of thing. She's actually going to be going to a real prison, like a real criminal. PHILLIPS: Now I'm being told that trading has been halted on Martha's stock. What does this mean now just for everything that has her name, her brand, her reputation, her company stock now being or trading halted now on Wall Street.

Justice Department Files Appeal On Secret Service Privilege
By Terry Frieden/CNN
WASHINGTON (June 12) The Justice Department Friday filed its appeal of a federal judge's decision that Secret Service agents protecting the president have no special privilege against testifying before a grand jury, according to government sources. The Justice Department refused to confirm the filing, apparently because of court-ordered secrecy. But other officials familiar with the case tell CNN the appeal was filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington.

Calling him "a man of great integrity, a man of great judgment and a man who knows the law," President George W. Bush announced his decision to nominate John Ashcroft to serve as Attorney General of the United States on December 22, 2000. Upon confirmation by the Senate, Ashcroft pledged to renew the war on drugs, reduce the incidence of gun violence and combat discrimination so no American feels outside the protection of the law. Ashcroft was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 9, 1942. He was raised in Springfield, Missouri, where he attended public schools until enrolling at Yale University, where he graduated with honors in 1964. He received his J.D. from the University of Chicago in 1967. He began his career of public service in 1973 as Missouri Auditor and was later elected to two terms as the state's Attorney General. His ability to work with leaders of both political parties prompted his colleagues in the non-partisan National Association of Attorneys General to choose him as Chairman. Ashcroft was elected Governor of Missouri in 1984 and held that post until 1993. During his tenure, he balanced eight consecutive budgets and served as Chairman of the Education Commission of the States.

Welcome to the Criminal Justice Planning Agency Portal The Statistical Analysis Centers (SACs) are units or agencies at the state government level which use operational, management, and research information from all components of the criminal justice system to conduct objective analyses of statewide and systemwide policy issues. There are currently SACs in 52 states and territories. The SACs vary in their placement within the state government structures. Some are within a criminal justice or general state planning or coordinating agency; some are part of a governor's advisory staff; and others are located in a line agency such as the state police, attorney general's office, or department of corrections. There are several housed in universities. This diversity is also reflected in the SACs' roles and activities in their respective states. Some of the SACs concentrate on collecting and distributing specific criminal justice-related data sets, others are involved in active research on policy issues, and some have been instrumental in the design and implementation of various policies and automated information systems. Most of the SACs obtain their base financial support from the U.S. Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Statistics. Many also receive funding from other federal and state budget appropriations.
