Buddhist monks in China, Japan, and Tibet developed jujitsu over a period of 2,000 years as a system of defense that could be used against armed marauders and yet would not be in conflict with their religion. Jigoro Kano, a Japanese jujitsu expert, created judo (1882) by modifying or dropping many holds that were too dangerous to be used in competition. It depends for success upon the skill of using an opponent's own weight and strength against him, thus enabling a weak or light individual to overcome a physically superior opponent. A judo match begins with a ceremonial bow, after which each player grasps the other by the collar and sleeve of the jacket, or

History and philosophy
The early history of Judo and that of its founder, Japanese polymath and educator Kano Jigoro (surname first in Japanese ) (1860-1938), are inseparable. Kano was born into a well-to-do Japanese family. His grandfather was a self-made man, a sake brewer from Shiga prefecture in central Japan; however, Kano's father was not the eldest son and did not inherit the business, but instead became a Shinto priest and government official, with enough influence for his son to enter the second incoming class of Tokyo Imperial University Kano was a small, frail boy, who, even in his twenties, did not weigh more than a hundred pounds, and was often picked on by bullies. Challenge To Asia For Judo Golds
by Roger Wills
Judo has been part of the men's Olympic Games program since 1964 in Tokyo. Women's judo, however, had to wait until the 1988 Seoul Olympics to earn its place when it was introduced as a demonstration sport. It became a fully-fledged women's Olympic sport four years later in Barcelona. Judo is the only Olympic sport to have originated in Asia. Its origins trace back to medieval times. Judo was established as a modern sport in 1882, but it wasn't until 1951 that the International Judo Federation - a body that now boasts more than 150 members - was formed. Australia's Theo Boronowski won a judo bronze medal in the sport's first Olympic Games in 1964, and Sue Williams and Julie Reardon won gold and bronze respectively when judo was introduced as a demonstration event in Seoul.

Freshman captures national judo title for U.S. colleges By Beth Applebome Binghamton University freshman Dmitry Lisenenkov has taken first place in the Judo College Nationals, earning the right to compete in the World Judo University Games. The win at College Park, Texas, is the latest in a series for Lisenenkov, who hopes the effort will eventually lead to the Olympics. Lisenenkov said he is still waiting for details on where and when the World University games will be held. In the meantime, he plans to compete from April 31 through May 2 in the Senior Nationals. If Lisenenkov places in the top three in that competition, he can qualify for trials for the 1999 World Championships, which he hopes will lead to the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. "My main goal is to get to the Olympics," he said. "Hopefully in 2000 or 2004." An immigrant to the United States from Minsk, Belarus at age 10, Lisenenkov had an early start in the sport. Soon after his family arrived in the United States, his parents enrolled him at AAA Olympic Sports Club, a judo club in Brooklyn. "My parents wanted me to be busy and stay off the streets," he explained. "I had nothing to say in it because I was too young."

Introduction to Judo
Martial arts or combat sports generally divide into three main types namely the punching and kicking ones such as boxing and Karate, the close quarter grappling ones such as wrestling and judo and the weapon ones such as fencing and Kendo. Judo was ‘invented’ in 1882 by a Japanese by the name of Jigoro Kano. However it was formed from a synthesis of Ju-jitsu styles, in particular the Kito and Tenjinshinyo styles. Jujitsu is the name for Japanese unarmed close-quarter fighting systems of which there were many in the late 1800s. The Japanese Samurai were trained to fight using a variety of weapons such as the sword and the spear but when it became close-quarter fighting the techniques of Ju-jitsu were used. For the most part the Ju-jitsu systems were grappling systems practised in pre-arranged sequences for safety. It could be said that Jigoro Kano created yet another Ju-jitsu style but his genius lay in recognizing that many of the Ju-jitsu techniques could be practised fairly safely. So in his system he created a competitive form of Ju-jitsu where the dangerous moves were banned (such as eye-poking) but retaining these dangerous techniques in the Kata or pre-arranged sequences of which there are seven. He called his system Judo to distinguish it from Ju-jitsu.

ABOUT THE SPORT: Combine the grappling style of wrestling with the mind games of martial arts, and you've got an idea what judo is.
By EMILY NIPPS, Times Staff Writer Published August 8, 2004 Founded in 1882 in Japan, judo is a self-defense technique in which opponents use quickness, balance and pressure to win. Matches last five minutes for men and women, a change from previous Games when women's matches lasted four. A winner is decided by an ippon, the point needed to win, two waza-aris (half-points) or by a judges' decision based on who has the fewest penalties and most quality points. To get the ippon, an athlete can throw - knock the opponent on his back - hold the opponent on his back for 25 seconds or make an opponent submit by getting him in an arm lock or choke.

The 38-year-old Binalbagan, Negros Occidental native told Sports Times he is preparing hard to boost his fighting form and physical condition that could lead him to another Olympic shot at the coming Games in Athens, Greece. “I’m working hard to improve the strength in my knees, arms and especially my upper body, because we’re still uncertain about who my opponents there [in Kazakhstan] will be,” said Baylon, who is expecting tough judokas from Japan, Vietnam and Korea to be his big rivals. “Those countries are considered the powerhouses in judo, so I have to maintain or improve my condition before I get there. For the meantime, I’ll do everything to raise my chances again.”
