Fallon gets biggest kicks from chasing glory
Michael Phillips
Tuesday July 20, 2004
The Guardian

Craig Fallon is used to making sacrifices in his desire to be an Olympic champion. It began when he joined the elite group of British judo and life has become no easier. "I had to miss my sister's wedding this year," he said. "I was training in Osaka and there was nothing I could do. She understood because she used to be involved in the sport and she knows what this year means to me."

Winter 2002, V.10.6 Kodokan judo, was the original development of one man, Kano Jigoro. Sickly as a youth, Kano studied various old jujutsu styles to build up his strength. As Japan modernized at the turn of the 20th Century, he became an educator and sought to refashion old jujutsu into what he thought would be more scientific and pedagogically sound system of sport, fitness and discipline. Kano's efforts saved Japanese martial arts, which were falling into disrepute and ill favor next to Western sports exercises. Kano gathered many outstanding athletes and technicians at his school, including Yamashita, Saigo Shiro, Yokoyama, etc. He tried to include judo as an Olympic sport as early as before World War II, but died before seeing his dreams reach fruition. Judo was among the first of the modern "Do" or Martial Ways, and was among the first to be taught so openly and vigorously both in modern Japan and abroad in other countries, alongside kendo. The Kodokan, Kano's main judo headquarters, sent many top flight instructors to other countries. The postwar Occupation of Japan, in the end, actually benefited judo because when the ban on martial arts was lifted, hundreds if not thousands of foreign military personnel and foreign visitors ended up training at the Kodokan or its many branch and affiliate schools.

This book surprised me at how good it was! It's a rare winning competitor who is also a competent instructor, and Dave Starbrook is apparently one of them. I found many interesting insights into Judo in this small book. Written very much in the style of Anton Geesink's book, or Yamashita's book; it is an autobiographical history of Starbrook's Judo. Many B/W photos, but the text is so good I found myself wishing for less photos and more text...

In this easy-to-follow and informative guide, Dave Starbrook, Britain's leading exponent of the sport, explains his techniques for success in judo. With the help of photographs and line drawings, he describes his favourite throws, attacking moves and combinations, his methods of groundwork, armlocks, strangleholds, defensive and counter moves. But judo is a sport in which each individual has to find the techniques which suit him best, and nobody knows this better than joint British team manager Dave Starbrook. So he also explains methods which other champion judoka (judo players) use, but which he found less rewarding.

Featured Athlete: Marie-Hélène Chisholm , Judo
From injury list to medal podiums in a year
By Alison Korn
Just one year after she had to pull out of the 2002 Commonwealth Games with an ankle injury, Marie- Hélène Chisholm has been mercilessly flipping, throwing and holding her judo opponents en route to the 2003 Pan Am Games this August.
At 24, Chisholm has already been on the national team for ten years and is the top female prospect on a powerful Canadian judo squad. Though she won the Francophonie Games in 2001, Chisholm's career really caught fire this season, after she returned from three months off last summer to heal. In 2003 alone, Chisholm has medalled in seven out of eight international competitions, including in the Pan American Judo Championships in Salvador, Brazil, in June.
"I was scared coming back," says Chisholm, who weighs 70 kilograms and stands 170 centimetres tall (five feet six inches, 154 pounds). She admits her success took her by surprise, but says now, "When I go in tournaments, I want more and more."
Chisholm credits a sports psychologist with teaching her how to visualize her fights and gain confidence. Another world-class Canadian judoka in the same 70 kg weight class, Catherine Roberge, offers ongoing domestic competition, which will heat up over the Olympic spot next year. And Sylvain Hébert, who's been coaching Chisholm since she was 16, provides direction at the high performance Club de Judo de Varennes, which started as a small local club and grew in to a regional and then in 2001, a national training centre.

History
Judo became an Olympic sport for men in 1964 and women's judo was a demonstration sport in 1988, preparatory to its being added to the Olympic program in 1992. In Olympic judo competition, there are two pools, each with its own single-elimination tournament. The two pool winners compete for the gold medal, with the loser winning the silver medal. In each pool, the competitors who lost to pool winner enter a repechage round for another single-elimination tournament. The winners of the repechage pools are awarded bronze medals. Weight limits have changed through the years. The limits shown are those used at the 2000 Olympics. Top of page History My Blog Biography Glossaries Calendar ... Directory

Japan produces new king of judo
"Japan produced a new king of judo and wrapped up the most successful Olympic campaign in the history of their beloved sport by sweeping the men's and women's heavyweight titles with knockouts. World open-weight champion Keiji Suzuki dumped Russian Tamerian Timenov in the men's over-100kg final, restoring Japan's national pride after compatriot and rival Kosei Inoue suffered a shock defeat in a lighter class on Thursday.

Women's judo was added in 1992. The men's competition began in 1964 in Tokyo. Germany, Belgium and France lead in the men's field. Cuba tops the women's field. The finer points
Equipment: Contestants wear a judogi, which is loose fitting pants and a jacket tied by a black belt. They compete on a mat that is 32.8 feet square. Rules: Bouts last five minutes for men and four for women. A match can be one by a single point, which may be scored if one contestant throws his or her opponent to the mat so that the opponent's back strikes the canvas. If the throw is executed with perfect form, a point is awarded, and the match is over. If the form is not perfect, half a point may be awarded; another half can be gained by holding the opponent on the mat 20 seconds. Thirty seconds of holding is worth a full point as well. If no point is scored in the time allotted, the match goes to the person who has either a half point or who has accumulated the most credit. Bronze medals are awarded to each semifinal loser.
