Strangely for a martial art, judo in English means the 'gentle way'. Players are split into weight categories, so small judokas battle small judokas and larger ones fight each other too. It's supposed to be a defensive sport, where judo players use their opponents strength and movement against them. The idea is to throw your opponent to the floor and hold them for 25 seconds so they can't move, or force them to submit because they can't move. The first person to win 10 points wins the match. To win all 10 points in one go, called Ippon, an opponent has to be thrown, but it must be done just right. If even a little bit is wrong it's called a waza-ari and earns only seven points. Judoka can also earn points for other throws, with a koka worth five points and a yuko worth three. Matches last five minutes for men and four minutes for women and if neither competitor has earned 10 points in that time the fighter with the most points wins. Bizarrely, winning a match by choking your opponent or breaking their arm is within the rules.

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) announced today that the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for judo and taekwondo will take place in a two-sport competition June 5 at the San Jose State Event Center. This first-of-its-kind, dual-discipline format will feature American athletes vying for the honor of representing the USA at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. In announcing that the “Road to Athens” would again take the U.S. judo and taekwondo hopefuls through San Jose, USOC Chief of Sport Performance Jim Scherr cites the strong support of the region’s residents for Olympic sports, adding, “We have great partners in the City of San Jose and the San Jose Sports Authority.”

These are pleasant, dedicated working-class people who hail mostly from different Massachusetts towns and have devoted their passion to throwing other people's weight around. It's also a debt of gratitude to the families of all Olympic athletes who never get enough credit for their 5 a.m. rises and the second jobs they hold down to pay for lessons in gyms, pools, rinks and tracks that are not as well kept or as glamorous as the Exhibition Hall, the judo venue to which James Pedro Jr. (a.k.a. Jimmy) caught the athlete shuttle bus on Monday. We scribes can be a cynical lot and when we write appropriately about doping tests and bidding scandals, we sometimes overlook the moonlighting and second mortgages that get the athletes here. We previewed Jimmy in our Sept. 11
