Cusick's Latest Battle
Bob Cusick fought the good fight in the case of the Marine Electric. Now he is fighting again this time for full recognition of merchant mariners by veterans organizations. He convinced the local chapter of the VFW, where he is now the commander. But will the national organization follow? Here's his argument for it.

DAILY NEWS “In Harm’s Way: Sex abuse is the product of a volatile mix” (part 4 of a four-part series)
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette , Barbara White Stack
The sexual assaults of six children in Allegheny County group homes and treatment facilities have led to criminal charges against workers in the past three years. Other children were reportedly molested by workers, but criminal charges were not filed. And those are just the cases in which children came forward. No one knows how many times they didn’t, not in the county, Pennsylvania or the nation.

“Counties Swamped as Requests for Aid Soar”
The Denver Post , Ann Schrader
The number of Coloradans applying for Medicaid and food stamps doubled between 2000 and 2004, but the amount of money the state gives counties to handle the cases has grown less than 1 percent during that time. Blame for the skyrocketing caseloads has been placed on unemployment, lack of benefits and low-wage jobs that don’t pay the bills.

“Child Molesters to be Evicted” The Des Moines Register , Jeff Eckhoff and Kevin Dobbs Thirty Des Moines police officers will hit the streets next week to inform nearly 300 child molesters that they must move to new homes. That will be the first step to enforce a controversial state law that bans most offenders from living within 2,000 feet of a school or child-care center. The 2002 law, which survived state and federal court challenges, has created headaches for law enforcement agencies across Iowa. High-profile sex crimes against children have motivated at least a dozen states and a handful of cities to enact laws similar to Iowa’s.
