Travel Writer Says It's Arduous, Rewarding Photos by Jessica Gadeken "I'm not reckless, although I do like a reasonably calibrated sense of adventure and risk," said author David Quammen, who spoke Wednesday night as the 7th annual Greg Hinderyckx Travel Writing Lecturer. Freelance travel writing is not the dream job many people think in fact, it's not really a job at all, author and science writer David Quammen said Wednesday evening at Harris Hall. So don't ask him the most common question he hears, usually with a mixture of skepticism and envy: "You get paid to do that?" "This question comes from readers, sometimes, but more often from friends, acquaintances, people you meet at airports," said Quammen, who spoke at Medill's 7th annual Greg Hinderyckx Travel Writing Lecture. "These well-meaning people have an inaccurate perception of travel writing." In addition to the fact that freelance writers have no job security, pension or other benefits associated with stable, middle-class employment, true travel writers face a demanding, tedious, lonely, sometimes dangerous task, he said.

    107. Journalism Courses And Creative Writing From The London School Of Journalism
Creative writing and journalism courses full, part-time and distance learning offered.
    http://www.home-study.com/

News Journalism, feature writing and freelance journalism are covered by our home-study courses. Our distance learning courses covering the full extent of creative writing can be found at our learn to write website.
The LSJ also offers a range of NUJ recognised postgraduate courses , both as attendance and online courses. Evening classes covering news, freelance or travel journalism are held throughout the year, a four week summer school takes place every August and an intensive short journalism course is held three times a year.

You can rely on our long experience of teaching to give you the best opportunity to succeed as a journalist - our distance learning courses are based on the same syllabus and same documentation as our NUJ recognised postgraduate courses.

New CBSNews blog features Vaughn Ververs as 'nonbudsman'
By Kevin Ueda . Posted: 2005-09-21 Online now is Public Eye CBSNews.com's blog which provides a behind-the-scenes look at the CBS newsroom and an opportunity for Web users to communicate with CBS news. Vaughn Ververs, Public Eye editor, said the Internet was the chosen medium for Public Eye because the now-common blog format allows users to communicate in a conversational manner. "The Internet is where people are having conversations today and have been for a long time," Ververs said. "We allow people to post comments to everything we put up there whether it's a story we've done, or just an observation that we've made so we can have a dialogue there. We can answer people directly on the blog: When they e-mail in with a good question, we'll try to find the answer and we'll put it up." Ververs said the tone and appearance aimed for with Public Eye is "conversational, but not snarky all the time."

The Onion (Satire) Sheehan moved to New Orleans in 2004 to take a year off from the University of California at Berkeley, where administrators had temporarily suspended the stem-cell research program in which he was enrolled in hopes of helping to combat his younger sister Ruth's spinal meningitis. Friends report that his public spirit continued in the Big Easy, as he delivered meals to elderly New Orleans residents affected by recent Medicare cuts, and doggedly petitioned the Justice Department for the release of his life partner, Amin Sagheer, who has been detained without charge at Guantanamo Bay for nearly three years. I DO NOT stealthily link to porn, racist or other such sites and masque them as journalism sites. Web sites change hands. For example, there was once a very respectable magazine called Honeymoon. It died and its web site was replaced by for a porn site. As soon as I discovered this I removed it. With a web site this large I cannot check all the links on a regular basis. I rely on my visitors to report dead and changed sites. Thank you.
