School reform movements during the past 20 years have stimulated programs and tests that link newspaper reading, journalistic study and other media use with widely accepted educational objectives found in elementary, middle school, junior high school, high school and even collegiate language arts curricula. One recent study (Dvorak, 1998) examines high school student performance on Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition Examinations from 1989 through 1997. Specifically, it analyzes students who have taken an intensive journalistic writing course as preparation for the AP examination and compares their performance with those who have prepared for the same test by taking AP English composition or some other advanced high school English course. For seven consecutive years, 1991 to 1997, the journalism students passed at a rate higher than that of the AP English Composition students. During the first two years students took tests as part of the program (1989 and 1990), the global pass rate was higher than the journalism pass rate. In only 1989, the first year of the experimental program, was the global pass rate significantly higher than the journalism pass rate.

    Newswriting for Radio
Welcome to newscript.com , the Newswriting for Radio website. The Newswriting for Radio website is an online tutorial on the craft of radio journalism, with particular attention to the writing of news scripts. Since 1996, newscript.com has been providing creative suggestions and ideas to radio news reporters, writers and anchors, as well as to broadcast journalism students around the world.
    Improving your newscasts
The purpose of this website is to help radio journalists improve their skills as writers and anchors. Journalism education has greatly declined over the past two decades as colleges and universities have either closed journalism programs or transformed them into "Communications Departments." Radio journalism has been especially hard hit, with diminished teaching resources given over to television instruction because TV is the more attractive broadcast medium. Consequently, many journalists starting out in radio lack basic knowledge on how to communicate effectively though the medium. In the past, much of that knowledge was learned on the job, but consolidations, cutbacks and downsizing in radio have reduced news staffs to the point where news directors can afford little time to training those new in the profession. In this sink-or-swim environment, far too many radio journalists have figured out only how to float. They haven't been introduced to the wide range of possibilities in preparing radio news and are often frustrated either by not being able to move up to a larger market or by not having the satisfaction of becoming respected journalists within their communities.

For those who have asked and those who may, this collection of links for writers, researchers and the terminally curious is not, was never intended to be, and will never be the all-inclusive stash of every possible link fitting our slapdash criteria for what belongs here.
We select sites with some consideration and thought for usefulness, depth, interest and je ne sais quoi and we try not to offer fifty different links to "manuscript submission." Sometimes we find a really cool site on a subject we already cover and mull over which link to keep and which to set free, sometimes we keep both and add a third. We lean toward linking to cool sites maintained by people we've met in the ether, but don't use a friend's site if there's a better site elsewhere.
We don't link to just anybody and seldom link to commercial sites such as "Learn to Write in Five Days" or "We Will Publish Your Book" unless there is some no, make that a lot of free, useful content. We try to stay away from scammers and frauds; if you see links to what you think are questionable sites, drop us a line. We may or may not agree with you. Whether links are here or not is totally based on how we were feeling before our morning cup of espresso.

    Journalism Careers: Your questions answered
This site answers your questions about writing for magazines, editorial training, working freelance and much more to do with journalism careers. Whether you're a student planning your future in media, a recent graduate looking for careers advice or a mid-life career changer, you've come to the right place. Five years ago I set up a website to promote my work. Soon I was receiving emails from site visitors asking what it's like working as a journalist and how to get that crucial first break. I've been asked:
    • How did you get into journalism?
    • What should I study to get a job as a reporter?
    • What's the best way to go about pitching articles to editors as a freelancer?
    • How can I stop my ideas being rejected or - even worse - stolen?
    • How much are journalists paid?
    • What tips can you offer for conducting a phone interview with a rock star?
    • What sorts of pictures do magazines need?
    • How can I break writers' block?
