History of the Weil Journalism Library
In October, 1998, the Journalism Library turns 60 years old. Like many of IU-Bloomingtons' campus libraries, the School of Journalism's Weil Library, had rather modest beginnings. In 1938, the School of Journalism was a department in the College of Arts and Sciences. Miriam Meloy Sturgeon, IU Journalism student and member of the Daily Student staff, and a secretary in the Department of Journalism was selected by Department Chairman John E. Stempel to oversee the develop-
ment of a new Journalism Library. She described the Library's origins in a letter written in October 1954: MIRIAM MELOY STURGEON The library was housed in two small rooms on the chemistry building side of the old Daily Student Office. It was a walk around the corner in the rain (or shine) from the editorial offices and a longer hike to the Journalism offices, then located in the old Louden House on Forest Place. When Mr. Stempel and I walked into those two small rooms they were stacked knee high and higher with dusty books, pamphlets, miscellaneous papers and Daily Students dating back to 1924. With his cigarette hanging on his lower lip in usual fashion, Mr. Stempel said, "Its all yours. Make a library out of it." And he walked out the door. I looked around. There was an assorted collection of book shelves, a rickety four-drawer wooden file, two boxes of new #10 envelopes for clippings, a pair of scissors, two old desks, three chairs, and a new steel file for clippings. I raised the windows, started dusting off the beginnings, and the Journalism Library was launched.

Quick Links Libraries Internet Resources Resources for Reporters ... Thinking Critically about Discipline-Based World Wide Web Resources It is important to keep in mind some distinctions. The Internet is a technical infrastrucure, which connects computers by means of a network in which each computer can communicate with other computers. The World Wide Web, the Web, is an information-sharing model that is built on top of the Internet, using HTTP protocol to transmit data. Northwestern University Library (NUL) Website is the structured collection of web pages and electronic information resources, which the librarians at NUL have reviewed and confirmed to be of academic value and accuracy. Randomly surfing the Web will lead to websites which vary greatly in accuracy and value. Searching within the carefully assessed resources, which are listed in the NUL website, leads to verified academic-level information. Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism
