I have loved working for newspapers, and I have loved advising the student newspaper. To me, that was real. Televsion, on the other hand, I wasn't so sure about. Those good looking anchors were there for entertainment and for ratings, or so I believed. There was always a competition of sorts between the two types of media...competition for the advertising dollar, for readership/viewership. Many people predicted the end of newspapers as we knew them when television began bringing live images into our living rooms.

Rumor Mill: News Corp. and NCSoft?
Beijing-based gaming exec Bill Bishop posts on his blog that he's hearing "strong rumors" that Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. is in talks to buy NCSoft , publisher of the huge Korean virtual world Lineage, as well as City of Heroes and most recently Guild Wars. Bishop notes: The price would be high, but strategically it might fit with Murdoch's plans to get big fast in interactive media . Clearly News Corp likes gaming, as evidenced by the hefty price they paid for IGN. How reliable is the report? Bishop is currently CEO of Red Mushroom, an MMORPG publishing house, but was a co-founder and general manager of of CBS MarketWatch until it was bought by Dow Jones last year. It's a "grain of salt," but a tasty one from a media veteran. Posted by RichM at 10:04 AM Comments (0)

http://www.rrmtf.org/journalism/grantseekers.htm
Areas of Support
MTF's Journalism Program makes grants in five priority areas: leadership, Medill, freedom of expression, diversity and military-media. For a detailed description of the foundation's priorities, along with descriptions of the grants MTF has made in these areas, see Areas of Support
The Journalism Program funds a wide variety of activities that support our mission, including educational programs and publications, fellowships, research, advocacy, and monitoring. Generally, these activities are targeted toward leaders, experts, and opinion leaders in journalism, not toward those just starting out or seeking entry into journalism. Generally, these programs seek to make substantial and enduring change; thus, MTF seldom funds short-term projects or one-time events.
Application Process
The McCormick Tribune Foundation welcomes requests for funding from nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations and educational institutions for initiatives that support the mission of the Journalism Program.
Before submitting a proposal, an organization should send a letter of inquiry that describes, in no more than two pages, the nature, purposes, and costs of the proposed program. The letter should also outline the need for the program and the qualifications of the organization. Foundation staff will then help the organization determine whether to submit a formal proposal.

This California Association of Teachers of English (CATE) award has been established in memory of Marilyn Kahl, a fine journalism teacher and gifted poet. Bruce Lewenstein prepared this article that claims journalists in the United States do not discuss the same types of things when discussing ethics. Values outlined in professional association codes of ethics are addressed but social and ethical factors are not. Lewenstein discusses the differences between US and non-US journalist codes, and he explores journalism in the context of science, ethics and the role of the Internet. The issues outlined in this article were developed for workshops in Barcelona, Spain; Singapore; Punta del Este, Uruguay and Sidney, Australia. JournoPorn: Dissection of the Time Scandal

CMSS Activities
Military Journalism Course SUMMARY:
The goal is to enhance the military education of Canadian journalists who will report on Canadian military activities domestically and abroad.
Journalism students from across Canada are eligible to apply. Included in the scholarship are: air transportation to and from Calgary, accommodations, meals, and ground transportation in Alberta. For more information please contact:
Course developer and instructor: Bob Bergen
Centre for Military and Strategic Studies
Email: rbergen@ucalgary.ca
Phone: (403) 220-4038
Fax: (403) 282-0594 OUTLINE:
Much has changed in the world since the events of September 11, 2001, in the United States. Whereas widespread indifference toward the Canadian military formed a key part of the collective Canadian personality in the latter part of the 20th century, that is no longer the case in 2002.
The end game is to teach future journalists to learn how to learn about the military, thereby enabling them to feel professionally and ethically comfortable working in an environment that is decidedly foreign to and remote from the average civilian experience.
Method: The course is divided into two distinct components.
