This learning activity helps students increase their skills in descriptive writing by following tips and suggestions from writer Virginia Hamilton.

Do you remember the day your brother or sister was born? Or how about the time your family took a special trip? What do you remember most about your favorite birthday party? Moments like these provide great opportunities for descriptive writing. Capturing an event through descriptive writing involves paying close attention to the details by using all of your five senses. In this workshop, I'll share some writing tips and guidelines that will help you use your powers of observation to write and publish your very own descriptive writing. "Descriptive Writing with Virginia Hamilton" was written in 2001. Scholastic regrets to inform users that Ms. Hamilton died on February 19, 2002. TM

About
houseguests and homes
Bompa's here at our flat, sound asleep [*] after a long day travelling yesterday. Waiting for him in the airport in Edinburgh yesterday I felt like a little kid, I was so excited he was coming that waiting was almost painful. It's really special to show him our favourite things here and have him give them the thumbs up. With my grandfather, I'm even more like a kid than normal, and it's so lovely to be able to give him a hug whenever I want. Planning for the move is going well, except for the packing bit, but I'm sure that will happen at the last minute. Who really likes to pack in advance? We do have a few days overlap between getting the house and giving up the flat, so there's not too much of a rush. Sorry about the lack of posts this week, I've been jetting off to Liverpool for meetings (travelling across the country and back in a day may be possible here but that doesn't mean it's not exhausting) and we were short on time.

163. Smart & Lazy Webring -- Home
A place for effective online journals where writing reveals, rather than burdens.
http://www.12pointfont.com/smartlazy.html
To be a member of this ring, your journal must possess certain qualities.
It must be smart:
  • It must be updated at least three times a week. Special consideration may be given to sites that update less frequently, if we believe the content to be extraordinary.
  • It must have been going for at least six months. This will convince us that you are serious about this journaling thing, and not apt to quit two days after you submit your site to the ring.
  • You must use punctuation. Capital letters at the beginnings of sentences, periods at the ends, apostrophes where necessary, the whole bit.
  • As of 6/6/01, weblogs will no longer be accepted in this ring. Weblogs are great, but this ring is specifically for online journals. Sorry.

It must be accessible by the lazy:
  • It must not have pop-up windows. We are too lazy to continually close them.
  • It must be legible. We are too lazy to strain our eyes.
  • You must use navigation links ("Back" and "Next" or some such) between entries. We are too lazy to go hunting around your site to find the next or previous entry. DiaryLand applicants, please take note.

add your site to the ring
Or, you can:

http://www.writesite.org/html/journal.html
Many people keep journals as a record of the happenings of the day and their feelings about them. Writers use journals in a different way. Instead of recording what happened each day, they write in a journal on a regular basis to find out more about themselves. They use their journal as a place to polish their voice and keep it strong.
You can do anything you want in your journal. It’s your own space. There are no rules or structure except what you decide on. The main purpose of a journal is to help you get used to putting ideas on paper.
Ways to Get Started
  • Take time at the end of each day to record images, events, and scenes that have stuck with you Write down details you recall Make notes about other images or events the day’s images and events suggest to you Explore what the things you remember tell you about yourself Write freely for ten minutes using an image, event, or scene from the day as a starting point Reread what you wrote on other days and develop ideas that strike you
Experiment
Use your journal as a place to
  • play with words or phrases tell stories from different points of view compose a brief autobiography express opinions on issues apply different tones (for example: humorous, tragic, animated, dry, somber) to your writing

INTRODUCTION
It is essential for us that authors write and prepare their manuscripts according to the instructions and specifications listed below. The length and effectiveness of the peer review process will largely depend upon the care used by authors in preparing their manuscripts. Therefore, contributors are strongly encouraged to read these instructions carefully before preparing a manuscript for submission, and to check the manuscript for conformance before submitting it for publication.
Our expectations regarding your paper
We consider for publication papers which:
  • contain original work,
  • are focused on core aim and scopes of a journal,
  • are written in English (if the author is convinced of high scientific value of his contribution but is unable to deliver the text in English, we urge him to consult the Managing Editor of the selected journal for further instructions),
  • are delivered in electronic format.

You've seen them. You've heard about them. You've wanted to create your own. Whether you call it a blog , a weblog, a diary, or a journal, the simple OpenJournal perl script will manage and maintain your Web-based musings and writings! OpenJournal is a completely Web-based interface (say bye-bye to FTP, manual archiving, etc.). Features include: automated file creation; automated index updating; editing of all files through a Web-based interface; entries with or without titles and time posted; automated archiving based on a weekly or monthly format. All done through ordinary text files and no additional perl modules needed to run it. As usual, it's free.
Open Journal allows you to keep an online journal and configure it largely anyway you'd like it to look. It's very simple to operate and requires no maintenance. All you need do after installation is write in it from time to time, and it takes care of the rest.
Unlike my other open source effort, POD, the Open Journal program requires no third-party, external perl libraries or support programs. The program itself is relatively small and simple. It takes about 5 minutes to install and another 5 or 10 to customize it to your liking.

Nickster Corra Group Travel home Hiking the Scenic Trails above Cinque Terre on the Northern Italian Coast June 23, 2001 Lagos-Seville-Madrid-Paris
After five days of sun, surf, and sand in Lagos, I decided to get back up north to Paris and plan the eastern leg of my journey. Thus began my 24 hours of continent-crossing. I left the hostel at 6 am to catch the early bus back to Seville. As i walked along the Lagos rivermouth for the last time, I noticed the waves were actually breaking on the other side of the river. All week that upper beach lay quiet with a slight onshore breeze barely rippling the brillant mediterranean surface, but today I saw thick storm surf crashing on the shore, decent right-breaking sections and a couple guys were paddling out. So I snapped a few photos for the boys back home and reluctantly made my way to the bus station.
I had slept on the bus to Lagos, so this time i stayed awake and watched the Algarve coastline as we slowly made our way back to Spain. The Algarve is extremely beautiful; and there is much development along the coast ... newly constructed white villas with red tile roofs and shopping centers and gasp ... starbucks. It looked alot like recently developed south orange country, like Laguna Niguel, except for the occasional ancient castle jutting from a farmers field. In Lagos I did find some prime stretches of real estate on the cliffs overlooking the famous grottos, empty cow pastures with rotting abandoned cottages only a few miles out of town. If anyone has any venture capital they want to trust me with I think now is the time to start building vacation homes here for all the German tourists pouring into in Lagos every summer. The plan is to build now with escuchos and then sell next year in euros, once that currency is officially introduced as hard currency. So let me know.
