Today's Featured Journal Tips Tip: Holiday Cards and Holiday Journals When the holiday season rolls around we send and receive the smallest and most heartfelt gifts unique holiday cards. We remember the kindness of people during that time of the year and let it touch our lives but when the holidays are over – we can sometimes forget those good feelings. Try keeping a holiday journal. Think about each individual person on your card list this year and then start to explore your feelings about them in your journal. Is there someone you have lost touch with but miss terribly? What do you want to say to that person? When it comes to sending a card to the people we see all the time, do you want to share something that you don’t everyday? Are there people who you feel obliged to write to? Work through the feeling of obligation through journaling and try to understand something deeper about your relationship to that person before you send a card – it may change what you say to them this year.

The Science Journal: Writing and Inquiry Development
By Susan Dahl, Fermilab and Pat Franzen, Madison Junior High School, Naperville, IL District 203 BACKGROUND As science teachers, we are in a most exciting (and challenging) time in history. Content level information is accumulating faster than any of us can possibly process. A recent study suggested that our knowledge base in science and technology is doubling every 16 months! We can no longer pretend to be able to provide all the information. What is the answer? Perhaps a critical look at the process we use to teach, as well as the process by which children learn. One answer may lie in exploring the questioning and information analysis skills students develop through doing, reading, and writing. Grade Level: Intermediate through High School Objectives:
  • Students will develop and improve science journaling skills that model a strategy used in the science community. Students' research will accurately record class information/data. Students will experience a variety of science writing techniques.

One of my hesitations about introducing journal writing was that the interns might view it as yet one more thing to do in an already busy year. However, I thought the benefits of developing critical thinking skills and participating in the self-reflection process would far outweigh the additional workload. I introduced journal writing in the 2003/2004 internship year to provide interns with opportunities to step back, describe feelings, reactions and viewpoints to various situations and experiences. Ideally, they would reflect on situations and consider how things may have been done differently, and further define their learning needs and goals. Continue article Advertisement
Interns were asked to keep a weekly journal to share with me. Although interns were encouraged to reflect and write freely, I suggested that they use their journals to reflect critically on learning events or experiences that had taken place during rotations, education sessions, and meetings and that entries be not only mere descriptions of events but also how they felt about them and what other ideas stemmed from their experiences. Interns were encouraged to complete self-assessments of their learning, document and evaluate progress, and document learning goals and plans for the following week.

Journal writing with confidence reflection
How can a student be encouraged to evaluate and re-evaluate their own knowledge? This act of self-reflection is an essential element in the learning process, but too often students move on too quickly without proper consideration of either their own understanding, or of the value of the theories and facts that they are studying. This pattern describes one technique that may encourage such reflections.
  • The student writes a short text recording a fact or theory dealt with in a lecture, seminar, or reading; The student rates their confidence in that knowledge from one (low) to 5 (high); Over the next few sessions the student is prompted to reconsider what they have recorded; The student writes similar such confidence-rated recordings of aspects of their learning; The student (and others) can view a list of these confidence-based rated texts; The list can be sorted to show the most confident entry at the top, and the least confident entry at the bottom (or vice versa); The student can do more work on low confidence rated entries;

    Rutgers University New Brunswick, New Jersey As a requirement for promotion and tenure, all Rutgers Cooperative Extension faculty-at both the county and state level- are expected to contribute to the body of knowledge of their discipline. Evidence of this contribution includes professional conference presentations, widely disseminated programs and teaching methods, and journal article publication. To help faculty with journal writing, a one-day inservice education program, "Writing Skills for Professional Journals,"1 was conducted by two widely published faculty members. The objectives were to teach participants the techniques of journal writing and give them a hands-on writing experience as a base to build on for future publication. Fifty-two people from all program areas, about a third of the total Extension faculty, attended the program. These faculty were required to bring manuscript guidelines for two journals, a call for manuscripts, their calendar, and a draft or detailed outline of a proposed journal article. The program began with an overview of the reasons for publishing, including professional visibility, contribution to a discipline, career advancement, and personal satisfaction. Participants also discussed their frustrations, such as lack of time to write, not knowing what journals to publish in, and "writer's block."
