of Jordan Background:
For most of its history since independence from British administration in 1946, Jordan was ruled by King HUSSEIN (1953-99). A pragmatic ruler, he successfully navigated competing pressures from the major powers (US, USSR, and UK), various Arab states, Israel, and a large internal Palestinian population, through several wars and coup attempts. In 1989 he resumed parliamentary elections and gradually permitted political liberalization; in 1994 a formal peace treaty was signed with Israel. King ABDALLAH II - the eldest son of King HUSSEIN and Princess MUNA - assumed the throne following his father's death in February 1999. Since then, he has consolidated his power and established his domestic priorities, including an aggressive economic reform program. Jordan acceded to the World Trade Organization in January 2000, and signed free trade agreements with the United States in 2000, and with the European Free Trade Association in 2001.

Transjordan was one of the Arab states which moved to assist Palestinian nationalists opposed to the creation of Israel in May 1948, and took part in the warfare between the Arab states and the newly founded State of Israel. The armistice agreements of April 3, 1949 left Jordan in control of the West Bank and provided that the armistice demarcation lines were without prejudice to future territorial settlements or boundary lines. In 1950, the country was renamed the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to include those portions of Palestine annexed by King Abdullah. While recognizing Jordanian administration over the West Bank, the United States maintained the position that ultimate sovereignty was subject to future agreement. Jordan signed a mutual defense pact in May 1967 with Egypt, and it participated in the June 1967 war between Israel and the Arab states of Syria, Egypt, and Iraq. During the war, Israel gained control of the West Bank and all of Jerusalem. In 1988, Jordan renounced all claims to the West Bank but retained an administrative role pending a final settlement, and its 1994 treaty with Israel allowed for a continuing Jordanian role in Muslim holy places in Jerusalem. The U.S. Government considers the West Bank to be territory occupied by Israel and believes that its final status should be determined through direct negotiations among the parties concerned on the basis of UN Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338.

Al Urdun Al Jadid Research Center Home About ujrc Publications Downloads ... Contacts Jordan's Social History Inroduction Publications Activities Advisory Committee ... Contacts Program Introduction: Jordan's Social History Program was launched by Al-Urdun Al-Jadid Research Center (UJRC) in 1996 to raise further attention to the study of social movements and the history of the development of non-governmental organizations and municipalities, including educational, cultural and parliamentary institutions, and to compensate for the lack of concentration of historical sources on the political aspects of Jordan's contemporary history.
This program highlights the roots of Jordanian civil society organizations, examines their specific history, and paves the way to develop the field of historical studies, which in the past, suffered the absence of academic freedoms, and the appropriate political environment to allow the release of historical publications, which draw reconsiderations to the official "historical evidence." The field of historical studies also suffered due to the lack of historical books, which reflect the official perspective.
The program sets sights on broadening the field of research to include the important periods in Jordan's history, and to illustrate their backgrounds and social reflections, and to shed the light on the role of the various organizations that contributed to the formation, development, and character identification of the Jordanian society. The program also aims to focus on the social political history of important epochs in the Kingdom's history, which have not been given enough attention by historical references.

Under the patronage of Queen Rania, the Embassy of Jordan, in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, held a gala reception and a special musical performance by Jordanian pianist Zade Dirani, to mark the official launching of the Jordan expose at the National Museum of Natural History entitled "Celebrating Jordan's History and Culture" where a series of lectures and film on Jordan were held offering an opportunity to better understand Jordan's rich cultural treasures and heritage. The film, "Jordan: The Royal Tour" was viewed at the Baird Auditorium of the National Museum of Natural History. The audience enjoyed touring Jordan through the eyes of His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein as he rides his motorcycle through the red and dusty desert. From the craggy peaks of Wadi Rum to the depths of the Red Sea, or the beauty of Petra and the Dead Sea to the Roman ruins of Jerash, or the rock formations at Wadi Mujib 1300 below sea level to encountering a Bedouin Camel Guard, the sights of Jordan are breath-taking. Following the film, lectures by renown experts discussed Jordanian archeology, modern Jordan, the great traditions of earth architecture, and museum conservators' efforts at saving the remarkable ancient relics of Jordan. Ms. Nihad Shabbar, who is on leave from her position as curator of the Museum of Jordanian Hertage of Yarmouk University spoke to the audience about the history of Jordan from an archeological perspective.

var t = ""; document.write(""); var t = ""; document.write(""); Epipaleolithic Period The Epipalaeolithic Period shows that hunters were using composite tools, and hunting not just the large mammals, but also smaller creatures. At Wadi Madamagh near Petra, nearly 82% of the bones studied were from wild goats, evidence suggesting that the people already knew how to herd these animals. Paleolithic Era: c 200,000 BC – 8000 BC Man's activity in Jordan appeared as early as the beginning of the Paleolithic Age (Old Stone Age). Flint hand axes, knives, and scrapers of the Paleolithic Age are spread all over Jordan from north to south, notably in the regions of Aqaba, Jerash, Wadi Arabah, Ma'an, Jafr in the south, Kharranah and Azraq east of Amman. People lived in this early period as hunters. Mesolithic Period: c 12,000 BC – 10,000 BC (Middle Stone Age) The Mesolithic Period is part of the upper Paleolithic. It was followed by the pre-pottery Neolithic era and represented a new phase of culture, characterized by the beginning of settled life. Neolithic Period: 8000 BC – 4500 BC The best evidence of the Neolithic Period comes in the form of villages and pottery. Such evidence has been found in Jericho and areas of the Jordan River Valley such as Tell esh-Shuneh, Tel Abu Habil, Ghrubba in the East Bank of Jordan, and villages such as Ain Ghazal, Beidha and Basta Wadi Yarmuk also boasts a Neolithic pottery culture.

Eddie Jordan Racing was originally set up in 1980, at a time when Jordan himself was still competing as a driver. Initially, the team contested the British F3 Championship, and they later moved up into the International F3000 series.
In these early years, a good measure of success was achieved, with drivers such as Martin Brundle, Johnny Herbert and Jean Alesi. The move into Formula One came in 1991, with significant backing from 7-Up and the added bonus of the Ford HB V8 engine, as also used by Benetton.
It proved a highly impressive début season, with Jordan placed fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, ahead of such seasoned campaigners as Tyrrell, Lotus and Brabham.

    Prologue
In November 1769, Captain Gaspar de Portola's expedition to find and fortify the port of Monterey for Spain found instead San Francisco Bay. The party worked its way down the peninsula and camped on the bank of San Francisquito Creek near the giant California Coast Redwood that later travelers came to call El Palo Alto, or "the high tree" in Spanish. The tall redwood was a familiar landmark to the native Ohlone Indians. From this campsite, on which one corner of the Stanford campus is now situated, Portola's reconnoitering parties explored the area. Later, from this same campsite, Francisco de Ortega explored the eastern shore of the Bay. The old redwood, twin-trunked and well over 100 feet high, was visible for miles. In 1876, former California Governor Leland Stanford purchased 650 acres of Rancho San Francisquito for a country home and began the development of his famous Palo Alto Stock Farm for trotting horses. He later bought adjoining properties to bring his farm to more than 8,000 acres, land that eventually became the Stanford campus. The little town that started to grow across El Camino Real (the old Spanish "King's Road") from the university also took the name Palo Alto.
