In one of the most exciting discoveries in recent times, archaeologists working in Aqaba have unearthed what they believe to be specifically to be a church Trading routes developed connecting Aqaba with southern Arabia and Yemen, and the town grew into a thriving city. The early days of the Islamic era saw the construction of the city of Ayla, which actual ruins; unearthed in the mid 1980's are a few minutes walk north along the main waterfront road. They are around every other corner. Just kidding.
Anyway, I just read this piece on CNN.com about the rise of Jordan as a tourist and business destination. The Kempinski Hotel in Amman gets high marks as a (somewhat expensive) place to stay. The country is benefiting from the influx of wealthy Iraqis as well as U.S. servicemen on their way to Iraq, but also from an increased interest from Western travelers. By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time although a summary of his basketball career and influence on the game inevitably fails to do justice to the man. Paleolithic Period
Neolithic Period Early Bronze Age Middle Bronze Age ... The Hellenistic Period Paleolithic Period During the Paleolithic period (c. 500,000-17,000 BCE), the inhabitants of Jordan hunted wild animals and foraged for wild plants, probably following the movement of animals seeking pasture and living near sources of water. The climate during this period was considerably wetter than today, and therefore large areas of modern-day desert were open plains ideal for a hunting and gathering subsistence strategy. Evidence has also been found of Paleolithic inhabitation near a large expanse of water at Azraq. Paleolithic man in Jordan left no evidence of architecture, and no human skeleton from this period has yet been found. However, archaeologists have uncovered tools from this period such as flint and basalt hand-axes, knives and scraping implements. Ancient man also left clues to the nature of his existence beginning in Paleolithic times and continuing through the Neolithic and Chalcolithic eras. Neolithic Period During the Neolithic period (c. 8500-4500 BCE), or New Stone Age, three great shifts took place in the land now known as Jordan. First, people settled down to community life in small villages. This corresponded to the introduction of new food sources-such as cereal agriculture, domesticated peas and lentils, and the newly-widespread practice of goat herding- into the diet of Neolithic man. The combination of settled life and "food security" prompted a rise in population which reached into the tens of thousands.

Jordan's gone, but his meme lives on

It was inevitable from the moment the World Economic Forum decided to change its mind about releasing the videotape of Eason Jordan's remarks at Davos. Consider these "statistics" from an op-ed today in the left-wing Seattle P-I (ht Greg Ransom via Lorie Byrd Mainstream media reportage in the United States about the occupation in Iraq is being censured, distorted, threatened by the military and controlled by corporations that own the outlets. Recently at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Eason Jordan, a CNN executive, told a panel that the U.S. military deliberately targeted journalists in Iraq. He said he "knew of about 12 journalists who had not only been killed by American troops, but had been targeted as a matter of policy," said Rep. Barney Frank, a Democrat from Massachusetts who was on the panel with Jordan.

Indigenous hardiness structures and state formation in Jordan

Abstract
In this paper I take up the question of why ethnic solidarities continue to persist in many parts of the world today, with the consequence that ethnic conflicts also continue to occur. On the basis of insights gained from archaeological research in Jordan, I posit the evolution in Jordan - and in many societies around the world - of "indigenous hardiness structures" which, due to their combined effect, are inherently corrosive and dissolving of state-level polities? Such structures have attained great strength and resilience in countries like Jordan because of almost four millennia of foreign domination and exploitation of the indigenous population. Examples of such structures mentioned include the following practices and institutions: tribalism, multi-resource economic pursuits; maintenance of fluid homeland territories, residential flexibility; low-care water sourcing; hospitality and honor.
Introduction
In harmony with the theme of this conference, my presentation today deals with ethnic encounter and culture change in the country of Jordan. Being an archaeologist, I bring, as you might expect, a long-term perspective to this theme- - one which in this case spans four millennia. In particular, my aim today will be to highlight some of what we have learned as archaeologists of the history of Jordan's indigenous population. This history, as we shall see, is a different one from the one most tourists encounter when they visit the country. It is a history of the country's Arab inhabitants, as opposed to the history of its foreign occupiers.

Mr. Jordan of this sketch came with his parents to the Sunflower State in 1863, and to Allen county in 1866 and in the common schools acquired his education. He assisted his father until attaining his majority and then began farming on his own account. That he has labored untiringly and guided his labors by sound judgment is indicated by the fact that he is now the owner of three hundred and eight acres of valuable land, constituting one of the finest stock farms in Kansas. It is well improved with a fine residence, a commodious and substantial barn and all necessary outbuildings and a beautiful grove surrounds his home. His feed lots adjoin a large body of fine timber and there is plenty of running water upon the place. Each winter he feeds cattle and hogs in large numbers and these he ships WOODSON COUNTIES, KANSAS.

Although a crucial period in the kingdom's political history, students of Jordan have approached this era in a largely descriptive way.(4) Hussein's biographers have also romanticized this era by overemphasizing his personal qualities and prowess as salient factors enabling him to survive the myriad challenges upon his person and regime during those turbulent years.(5) However such explanations of the Hashemite regime's survival hinder attempts to demonstrate the potential contributions of Middle East comparative politics and foreign policy analysis to theory-building in similar sub-fields across other developing regions. Hence the need to revisit this definitive period of Jordan's history and subject it to a scrutiny that, simultaneously, provides a better explanation of the regime's survival and highlights its comparative theoretical implications.

Introductory Note
History, and different perceptions of history, are perhaps the most important factors in the Arab-Israeli conflict. Accounts of history, interpreting history in different ways, are used to justify claims and to negate claims, to vilify the enemy and to glorify "our own" side. Dozens of accounts have been written. Most of the accounts on the Web are intended to convince rather than to inform. This very brief account is intended as a balanced overview and introduction to Palestinian and Israeli history, and the history of the conflict. It is unlikely that anyone has written or will write an "objective" and definitive summary that would be accepted by everyone, but it is hoped that this document will provide a fair introduction.
