Jordan Time and Date Jordan History Back to Top Jordan's location as a buffer zone between the settled region of the Mediterranean littoral west of the Jordan River and the major part of the desert to the east contributed remarkablely to the nation's experience in ancient and more recent times. Until 1921, Jordan had a history as a vaguely defined territory without a separate political identity. Its earlier history, closely associated with the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, therefore comes under the histories of the contending empires of which it often formed a part. The weakness of the Arab states, enabled the Begin government in Israel to pursue a more aggressive foreign policy and to accelerate the pace of settlements in the occupied territories. Thus, between 1981 and 1982, the Arab states reacted apathetically to Israel's attack on the Iraqi nuclear reactor, its annexation of the Golan Heights, and its June 1982 invasion of Lebanon. Israeli aggressiveness and Arab passivity combined to raise fears in Jordan that Israel might annex the occupied territories and drive the Palestinians into Jordan. These fears were fueled by frequent references by Israel's hawkish Minister of Agriculture Ariel Sharon to Jordan as a Palestinian state.

Its history began around 2000 B.C., when Semitic Amorites settled around the Jordan River in the area called Canaan . Subsequent invaders and settlers included Hittites Egyptians Israelites Assyrians ... Persians , Greeks, Romans, Arab Muslims, Christian Crusaders, Mameluks Ottoman Turks, and, finally, the British. At the end of World War I , the territory now comprising Israel , Jordan, the West Bank , the Gaza Strip , and Jerusalem was awarded to the United Kingdom by the League of Nations as the mandate for Palestine and Transjordan. In 1922, the British divided the mandate by establishing the semi-autonomous Emirate of Transjordan, ruled by the Hashemite Prince Abdullah , while continuing the administration of Palestine under a British High Commissioner. The mandate over Transjordan ended on May 22, 1946; on May 25, the country became the independent Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan. It ended its special defense treaty relationship with the United Kingdom in 1957. Transjordan was one of the Arab states which moved to assist Palestinian nationalists opposed to the creation of Israel in May 1948, and took part in the warfare between the Arab states and the newly founded State of Israel. The armistice agreements of April 3, 1949 left Jordan in control of the West Bank and provided that the armistice demarcation lines were without prejudice to future territorial settlements or boundary lines.

History: The Nabataeans were the first known inhabitants of the area that is now Jordan. The Romans absorbed it into their empire, as part of the province of Arabia, in AD 106. Shortly after the death of the Prophet Muhammad in AD 632, Arab armies entered the region and established the Umayyad dynasty. However, this became something of a provincial backwater after the conquest of Baghdad. During the 11th and 12th centuries, Jordan was the scene of some of the major conflicts between the Christian Crusaders and Islamic forces. Salah ad Din (known in the West as Saladin) and his successors ruled Jordan from his main seat of power in Egypt from the late 12th century until they were displaced by the Mamluks, a race of mostly Kurdish and Circassian origin. The Mamluks repelled the Mongol invasion of the 14th century but were eventually overthrown by the Ottoman Turks in 1517. Jordan was governed along with modern-day Palestine and Syria as a single administrative entity (called a vilayet). Turkish rule lasted, in an increasingly anaemic form, until the beginning of the 20th century. After World War I, when the major Western powers began to dismember the old Ottoman Empire and distribute its territories among themselves, the area east of the Jordan River, known as Transjordania, fell to the British. Like neighbouring Palestine, Transjordania came under a League of Nations mandate under which the British maintained control. The mandate ceased in 1946, at which point Transjordania attained full independence under the present constitution.

    The Making of Transjordan
Although the Sykes-Picot Agreement was modified considerably in practice, it established a framework for the mandate system which was imposed in the years following the war. Near the end of 1918, the Hashemite Emir Faisal set up an independent government in Damascus. However, his demand at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference for independence throughout the Arab world was met with rejection from the colonial powers. In 1920 and for a brief duration, Faisal assumed the throne of Syria and his elder brother Abdullah was offered the crown of Iraq by the Iraqi representatives. However, the British government ignored the will of the Iraqi people. Shortly afterward, the newly-founded League of Nations awarded Britain the mandates over Transjordan, Palestine and Iraq. France was given the mandate over Syria and Lebanon, but had to take Damascus by force, removing King Faisal from the throne to which he had been elected by the General Syrian Congress in 1920. Emir Abdullah King Faisal II and his immediate family were all murdered in a bloody coup by Nasserist sympathizers led by Colonel Abdel Karim Qassem on July 14, 1958. The Hashemites suffered another major blow in 1925, when King Ali bin al-Hussein, the eldest brother of Abdullah and Faisal, lost the throne of the Kingdom of the Hijaz to Abdel Aziz bin Saud of Najd. The loss, which was brought about by a partnership between Ibn Saud and followers of the Wahhabi movement, led to the establishment of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and brought to an end over one thousand years of Hashemite rule in Mecca.

    Ancient History
Most of you reading this page are familiar with the newsgroup rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan (abbreviated rasfwrj). Before July 1994, though, there was no such group. Rasfwrj sprang from rec.arts.sf.written (raswf), a newsgroup for the discussion of all written works of speculative fiction. If you only want a short explanation of what happened, it is sufficient to say that the RJ-related traffic on rasfw grew large enough that a separate group, rasfwrj, was created in July 1994. If you want a more detailed account, keep reading.
    Growing Pains
There were two attempts at creating a new newsgroup in the rec hierarchy for Robert Jordan. The first happened in about October of 1993 when rec.arts.sf.written was being flooded with lots of RJ traffic due to the release of

    Jordan - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Jordan, like most countries in the Middle East, has a history that dates back as long as humans have walked the earth. Ancient civilizations of Jordan have played an important part in human history. They have even been mentioned in ancient religious books. Ancient Christian and Jewish books mention Jordanian cities being taken by the Israelites, who wandered through Jordan on the way to the Promised Land.
Archaeologists have found man-made tools in Jordan that date to the Paleolithic Era, between 500,000 BC and 17,000 BC. No human remains have ever been found in Jordan from this era, however. During the Neolithic Era, humans in Jordan settled into villages. Evidence of this can be found at Ein Ghazal in Amman, Jordan's capital city. In Ein Ghazal are ruins of neighborhoods of buildings and houses. In fact, one of the world's oldest statues was found at Ein Ghazal. It is almost 8,000 years old and measures about three and a half feet high.
Jordan and its people developed cultures through trade with the peoples of nearby Palestine, Syria, and Egypt. Around the 13th century BC, the Egyptian Pharoah Tuthmosis III set up Egyptian rule in Canaana country that included parts of Jordan and Palestine. During the time of the Biblical Old Testament, Canaan came under attack from the Israelites, who had earlier escaped from slavery in Egypt. Attacks on Canaan by the Israelites and others reduced Egypt's control over the area. Egyptian rule of nearby lands was followed by Babylonian, Persian, Greek, and Roman rule.

Until 1921, however, Jordan had a history as a vaguely defined territory without a separate political identity. Its earlier history, closely associated with the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, therefore comes under the histories of the contending empires of which it often formed a part. By the time the area was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century, the inhabitants of three general geographic regions had developed distinct loyalties. The villagers and town dwellers of Palestine, west of the Jordan River, were oriented to the major cities and ports of the coast. In the north of presentday Jordan, scattered villagers and tribesmen associated themselves with Syria while the tribesmen of southern Jordan were oriented toward the Arabian Peninsula. Although most of the populace were Arab Muslims, the integration of peoples with such differing backgrounds and regional characteristics hampered the creation of a cohesive society and state. In 1921 the Amirate of Transjordan was established under British patronage on the East Bank by the Hashimite (also seen as Hashemite) prince Abdullah ibn Hussein Al Hashimi, who had been one of the principal figures of the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during World War I. Direct British administration was established in Palestine, where Britain (in the Balfour Declaration of 1917) had pledged to implement the founding of a Jewish homeland.

The Ammonites and the kingdoms of Edom, Gilead, and Moab, situated east of the Jordan River, are referred to repeatedly in the Bible. These kingdoms were successively conquered by, or made tributary to, the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, and Romans.
