History
JORDAN'S LOCATION AS a buffer zone between the settled region of the Mediterranean littoral west of the Jordan River and the major part of the desert to the east contributed significantly to the country's experience in ancient and more recent times. Until 1921, however, Jordan had a history as a vaguely defined territory without a separate political identity. Its earlier history, closely associated with the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, therefore comes under the histories of the contending empires of which it often formed a part. By the time the area was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century, the inhabitants of three general geographic regions had developed distinct loyalties. The villagers and town dwellers of Palestine, west of the Jordan River, were oriented to the major cities and ports of the coast. In the north of presentday Jordan, scattered villagers and tribesmen associated themselves with Syria while the tribesmen of southern Jordan were oriented toward the Arabian Peninsula. Although most of the populace were Arab Muslims, the integration of peoples with such differing backgrounds and regional characteristics hampered the creation of a cohesive society and state. In 1921 the Amirate of Transjordan was established under British patronage on the East Bank by the Hashimite (also seen as Hashemite) prince Abdullah ibn Hussein Al Hashimi, who had been one of the principal figures of the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during World War I. Direct British administration was established in Palestine, where Britain (in the Balfour Declaration of 1917) had pledged to implement the founding of a Jewish homeland.

People of Jordan The population of Jordan is almost entirely Arab. The Circassians and the Armenians form the racial minorities but are barely 1 percent of the population. Jordan is 79 percent urban; nomads and semi nomads represent about 5 percent. Sunni Muslims are a majority and Shia Muslims form a small minority. Christians, about one-third of whom belong to the Greek Orthodox Church, represent 4 percent of the population. Economy of Jordan Jordan is almost landlocked and has inadequate supplies of water, which makes it unsuitable for agriculture. Limited natural resources have hampered economic growth. Jordan heavily depends upon foreign aid from its oil rich neighbors. Recently, Jordan has embarked on economic reforms to improve the economy. The Jordanian government has worked closely with the IMF, practiced careful monetary policy, made significant progress with privatization and liberalized the trade regime sufficiently in order to guarantee Jordan's membership in the Word Trade Organization. Flag of Jordan Jordan's flag contains three equal horizontal bands of black (top, the Abbassid Caliphate of Islam), white (the Ummayyad Caliphate of Islam), and green (the Fatimid Caliphate of Islam) with a red isosceles triangle (representing the Great Arab Revolt of 1916) based on the hoist side bearing a small white seven-pointed star symbolizing the seven verses of the opening Sura (Al-Fatiha) of the Holy Koran; the seven points on the star represent faith in One God, humanity, national spirit, humility, social justice, virtue, and aspirations.

M odern Jordan is a 20th century creation. In an ancient cockpit of
a colorful history, Jordan dates back to primeval times fostering
humanity's major monotheistic tenets, with a succession of great
civilizations that left their innumerable remnants. To get to know Jordan is to experience history. There is an
archaeological evidence of settlements for great cultures starting
from AD 160 with the Nabateans till our modern history including the
Roman Empire, Byzantines, Crusaders, the Arab Islamic Empire,
Mamlukes, and the Ottoman Empire. Jordan's millennia of settlements left it with varied archaeological
treasures that range from the Neolithic statues to the Graeco -
Roman splendour of Jerash, the mosaic riches of Byzantine
Madaba, and the rock carved wonders of Nabatean Petra. Needless to say, that under every rock, there seems to be a vestige of the past with a haunting beauty that carries you back through ancient pages of history to a forgotten world. Monday, January 17, 2005 Center to celebrate South Jordan history Organizers have big plans and grand ideas for an asset to city By Doug Smeath
Deseret Morning News
Gale History Center is to have six sections: farming and ranching, education, business, community, children and family, and mining Today, almost 40,000 people live in the fast-growing city.
And a host of longtime residents and city leaders want newcomers to have an understanding of their city's history.
"They really are beautiful," history center committee chairwoman Jeanne Jackman said of the drawings and plans for the center. "They're spectacular."
"We want it to be more hands-on. We don't want it to be something you just come in and look at," she said.
There will be an interactive table-top map showing the city's growth over time. There will be replicas of old storefronts like the Holt's Service shop, one of the city's original businesses that sprang up when most of the city was farming land for raising livestock and growing grains and alfalfa. And historic remnants like old doors from historic homes will be integrated into the museum's structure.
But first, organizers have to decide where to put it.

Hi, my name is Ray Jordan, i am researching my family tree and it appears that my great, great, great, great grandparents come from Appleby Magna. Their names are James Jordan and Hannah Jordan (nee Sheldon) she was born approx 1761. They had a son William born 1786 died 1843 who married a Mary Winfieldale (i think the name is spelt this way?) born 1789 died 1847, he was a bricklayer and they lived in Donisthorpe and are buried in St John the Evangelist churchyard. I would be grateful if anyone could help me with any information regarding my ancestors James and Hannah please. Regards Ray Jordan Last changed: September 21, 2005

Help Us Tell the Story of South Jordan! One of the quickest ways to bring the past to life is to share family stories and show ordinary, treasured possessions. Holding Grandpa's well-worn hammer or cooking up Aunt Elizabeth's berry cobbler can make stories of these family members come alive for a new generation. The South Jordan History Center Committee wants local residents to learn the story of our town and to learn how to pass that story on to their children. To make the South Jordan History Center a success, we need the local history and information that YOU know. We hope to find memories of early South Jordan in your minds, your attics, and your scrapbooks. We will help display your family treasures and record the memories you have of "the old days" in South Jordan. The History Center aims to be a place of doing, not a building full of dusty display cases! Stepping into a chore or a community activity from long ago can bring the past to life. So, in the Center, families will be able to shop in a 1930's grocery store, sit in Grandma's parlor, play the same games their grandparents may have enjoyed, explore a riverside dugout home, operate a water sluice, and experience music and artwork created by local residents, past and present. Personal histories of town residents will make everyday life from the past seem more real. Visitors will see and touch the world of mining-from ore samples to demos of mining equipment. In the Children's Area, hands-on activities will be everywhere, and the chance to role-play some of the adult duties of a town will supplement classroom lessons.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
History of Jordan The land that became Jordan forms part of the richly historical Fertile Crescent region. Its history began around 2000 B.C., when Semitic Amorites settled around the Jordan River in the area called Canaan . Subsequent invaders and settlers included Hittites Egyptians Israelites Assyrians ... Persians , Greeks, Romans, Arab Muslims, Christian Crusaders, Mameluks Ottoman Turks, and, finally, the British. At the end of World War I , the territory now comprising Israel , Jordan, the West Bank , the Gaza Strip , and Jerusalem was awarded to the United Kingdom by the League of Nations as the mandate for Palestine and Transjordan. In 1922, the British divided the mandate by establishing the semi-autonomous Emirate of Transjordan, ruled by the Hashemite Prince Abdullah , while continuing the administration of Palestine under a British High Commissioner. The mandate over Transjordan ended on May 22, 1946; on May 25, the country became the independent Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan. It ended its special defense treaty relationship with the United Kingdom in 1957. Transjordan was one of the Arab states which moved to assist Palestinian nationalists opposed to the creation of Israel in May 1948, and took part in the warfare between the Arab states and the newly founded State of Israel. The armistice agreements of April 3, 1949 left Jordan in control of the West Bank and provided that the armistice demarcation lines were without prejudice to future territorial settlements or boundary lines.

Jordan Shoes
Released in 1985, the start of a great era. Michael Jordan was the #3 overall draft pick by the NBA. Performing a wonderful three years with North Carolina and was co-captain of the Olympic basketball team that everyone know won won the gold medal. Nike understood that Michael would be something else and signed him up to make a line of shoes and apparel. This shoe comes in a vibrant blue and has black trim and white base. The Jordan shoes II was designed by Bruce Kilgore and just as its predecessor it showed a great innovative design. The low-tops were very stylish, produced in Italy and were far from the ordinary nike basketball shoe. Surprisingly this is the only Air Jordan II ever that has not been made in a black version. There were sketches and prototypes of a black leather AJ II but it never became reality. Why? Nobody has the answer. The Air Force Ones have seen four presidents in office, the Nike Air Force Ones provides great ankle support and a durability that is beyond more modern shoes; all in one low-cost, stylish package. Available in low, mid, or high in almost any color to suit your individual style, the Air Force Ones will never go out of style. The white/black Jordan Shoes II 's were retroed in 1994 in limited quantities. Just like the Jordan I's they sold very poorly and were found on discount racks on Footlockers nationwide.
