http://www.wws.princeton.edu/~wws401c/geography.html
Geography of Water Resources The Jordan River Valley stretches from Mount Hermon in the north to the Dead Sea in the south and includes Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Eighty percent of the basin, however, is in Israel, Jordan, and the West Bank, which do not have other significant surface water sources, and have only limited groundwater sources. Jordan relies on the surface waters of the basin for 75% of its water needs, while Israel relies on the surface waters for only 30% of its water consumption because it has larger aquifers from which to draw water. Syria relies on the basin minimally, for the Euphrates River and other smaller basins fall within its borders. Israel and Palestine have an combined 1.4 BCM/yr of renewable water resources, with an additional 450 MCM/yr captured by Israeli water reuse and rainwater collection for a total of about 2 BCM/yr. Already a deficit of water exists between what is used and what is available in the environment. In 1994, Israel and the Palestinian territories used approximately 2.1 BCM of water. Map of the Regional Drainage Basins The Sea of Galilee is the principal aboveground storage reservoir in the basin with a surface area of 170 square kilometers and a volume of approximately 4000 MCM. Its water derives from three sources: the Hasbani, Dan and Banias River, which merge at a point six kilometers within Israel’s northern border. At present, the water level in the Sea of Galilee has fallen more than 213 meters below sea level and is now no more than 4 to 6 meters deep at any point. This low quantity of water threatens water quality, including the toxic algae and lowers the water pressure that keeps out the salt water springs flowing into the bottom of the lake.

Parts of Jordan were included in the dominions of ancient Iraq, including the Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian and Mesopotamian Empires. From the west, Pharaonic Egypt extended its power and culture into Jordan, while the nomadic Nabateans built their empire in Jordan after migrating from the south of the Arabian peninsula.

    Biography
Jason Jordan completed his BSc in Physical Geography at Coventry University (1993-1997) after which he undertook a PhD, also at Coventry, entitled Holocene Coastal Change in Lewis and Harris, Scottish Outer Hebrides (awarded 2003). He was appointed as a teaching and research fellow at Exeter in September 2004.
    Research Interests
Jason is a member of the Quaternary Palaeoenvironments Research Group . His main area of interest lies in the use of diatoms to reconstruct palaeoenvironments. His doctoral work concentrated on Holocene coastal sequences from the Western Isles of Scotland and was combined with grain size analysis and geomorphological mapping in order to reconstruct former sea levels and periods of increased storminess. He is currently working on sediments from Icelandic, Chinese, Japanese and New Zealand lakes with other members of the Research Group at Exeter.

Palestine, currently under occupation, is located on the East coast of the Miditerannean Sea, West of Jordan and to the south of Lebanon. The territory of Palestine covers around 10,435 square miles (almost same size as the state of Vermont in the USA - that is, pretty small.) [
Out of this territory, there are 10,163 square miles of land area. The rest is water: half of the area of the Dead Sea (al-BaHr al-Mayyit), Huleh Lake (BuHayrat al-Huuleh) which was dried by the occupation and Tiberias Lake (BuHayrat Tabariyyah) which is also known as the Sea of Galilee (BaHr al-jaliil). Topography and Terrain
Palestine can be divided into four main distinct regions:
    • Coastal and Inner Plains:
These are among the best fertile land in Palestine and elsewhere, with adequate resources of irrigation (from rainfall and underground water). They are where most of the Palestinian citrus groves used to stand. The coastal stretch is divided by Jabal al-Karmel (Mount Carmel) into the plain of Akka (Acre) and the plain of Palestine (also called Saruunah). The inner part consists, largely, of Marj bin 3aamir. This one is triangular in shape, with Jenin and Nazareth (An-NaaSirah) as its base and the SE edge of the Akka plain as its sharp corner.

    The Geography of Europe
    GEOG 272 (3 cr/3 hr)
    Lecturer: Dr. Erika Lind
    TUESDAY AND THURSDAY 5:35-6:50 PM
Introduction to the Course The geography of Europe is ever changing, as the European continent experiences the transformation of socio-economic structures, in particular political and territorial demarcations that have evolved following the initiation of the European Union (EU). Apart from the institutional development and transformation of the EU, the continent as a whole is also subject to change and adaptation to socio-economic forces, and environmental impacts, that act on a global scale. Consisting of dozens of sovereign states, numerous cultures, hundreds of ethnic minorities as well as socio-political and economic interrelations that have stretched over the entire globe for centuries, Europe as a region is not easily pinned down. This course will apply a critical perspective on regional development and transformation as well as the construction of spatial scales, a perspective that stems from a social constructionist perspective offered by the Finnish political geographer Anssi Paasi. It will continuously address the interrelations, at times contradictory faces, between societal processes and physical boundaries. It will cover geographical themes of physical geography, cultural and social geography, economic geography and political geography. This course will address several objectives related to epistemology and methodology. An overall objective is to provide students a comprehensive perspective on regional development and transformation, in this specific case the development of Europe, and how such a geographical process evolves over time and transcends spatial boundaries. Furthermore, the course aims to give students skills to depict and analyze, in writing as well as verbally, the social challenges, economic relations and political transformative processes that make up current Europe. An additional objective is to provide students with research experience, verbal and written skills in initiating, outlining, finalizing as well as presenting an independent research project

    Small Area; Short Distances
Israel's area within boundaries and ceasefire lines, including the areas under Palestinian self-government, is 10,840 square miles (27,800 sq.km.). Long and narrow in shape, it is some 290 miles (470 km.) in length and about 85 miles (135 km.) across at the widest point. The country is bordered by Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan to the east, Egypt to the southwest and the Mediterranean Sea to the west. Mountains and plains, fertile land and desert are often minutes apart. The width of the country, from the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Dead Sea in the east, can be crossed by car in about 90 minutes; and the trip from Metulla, in the far north, to Eilat at the country's southern tip takes about six hours.
    Geographical Features
Israel may be divided into four geographical regions: three parallel strips running north to south and a large, mostly arid zone in the southern half.
