People of Jordan The population of Jordan is almost entirely Arab. The Circassians and the Armenians form the racial minorities but are barely 1 percent of the population. Jordan is 79 percent urban; nomads and semi nomads represent about 5 percent. Sunni Muslims are a majority and Shia Muslims form a small minority. Christians, about one-third of whom belong to the Greek Orthodox Church, represent 4 percent of the population. Economy of Jordan Jordan is almost landlocked and has inadequate supplies of water, which makes it unsuitable for agriculture. Limited natural resources have hampered economic growth. Jordan heavily depends upon foreign aid from its oil rich neighbors. Recently, Jordan has embarked on economic reforms to improve the economy. The Jordanian government has worked closely with the IMF, practiced careful monetary policy, made significant progress with privatization and liberalized the trade regime sufficiently in order to guarantee Jordan's membership in the Word Trade Organization. Flag of Jordan Jordan's flag contains three equal horizontal bands of black (top, the Abbassid Caliphate of Islam), white (the Ummayyad Caliphate of Islam), and green (the Fatimid Caliphate of Islam) with a red isosceles triangle (representing the Great Arab Revolt of 1916) based on the hoist side bearing a small white seven-pointed star symbolizing the seven verses of the opening Sura (Al-Fatiha) of the Holy Koran; the seven points on the star represent faith in One God, humanity, national spirit, humility, social justice, virtue, and aspirations.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Salt - Culture th -century fortress. The word for 'salt' apparently originates from the name of the town Es-Salt. The first war that mankind initiated was most probably over 'salt'. It's the ideal place for admiring the architecture, stopping off at the small museum and finishing up at Salt Zaman, a lovely restored old building in the heart of the town, charmingly furnished with antiques and handicrafts. Salt also houses a Handicrafts School where you can admire traditional skills of ceramics, weaving, silkscreen printing, and dyeing. The town is an agricultural market and an administrative centre. The chief crops produced in the vicinity are grapes (for raisins), olives, and grains; tanning extract is produced from sumac bushes. In 1966 a pharmaceutical factory was opened at As-Salt. http://www.mideasttravelling.net/jordan/amman/amman_culture.htm
ADVERTISING INFORMATION Amman - Culture Jordan is part of the eastern Mediterranean weather system and boasts one of the world's most pleasant climates. There are marked seasonal contrasts, however. Summers are dry and warm-to-hot and winters are wet and cool-to-cold, with occasional snowstorms. In the highlands there are often strong, cool breezes on summer nights and the low-lying areas enjoy pleasant, moderately cool winters. Archaeological cave excavations north of Amman indicate that both conquering and indigenous people have populated Jordan for the last 100,000 years. Called Philadelphia during Graeco-Roman rule, it is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the region with a number of ancient sites, such as an Odeon, a 6000-seater amphitheatre, a temple of Hercules and a Roman citadel. Thirty miles from Amman is the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth at 400 meters below sea level and believed to be the site of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. To the south, are the ruins of the 2000-year-old city of Petra, carved out of sandstone cliffs and used in the final sequence of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Further south are more historical sites including a 12th-century crusader castle and Wadi Rum, made famous by Lawrence of Arabia. Amman has grown quickly after World War II, much because of the influx of Palestinian refugees.

About your guide:

This guide was put together by Kenneth Betts. Originally from Canada, Ken has been living, working and raising his family in Jordan for more than twenty years. Although he is most at home in Jordan, he has traveled extensively through most of the countries of the Middle East. His background of studies in sociology, cultural anthropology and applied linguistics provide a foundation on which he has built an understanding and appreciation of the Jordanian people and their language.
Ken has faced the challenges of being an employee in an otherwise completely Jordanian company, working as a partner with individual Jordanians and being an employer of Jordanians. Working through MEABT (Canada) Ltd. since 1986, Ken has gained experience in leadership, administration and professional coaching of both Jordanians and expatriates. Besides MEABT's coaching service provided to expatriates working in Jordan, Ken is currently involved in setting up an aquaculture project.

    Jordan History and Culture
History The territory constituting modern Jordan was the site of some of the earliest settlements and political entities known to historians. The Ammonites and the kingdoms of Edom, Gilead, and Moab, situated east of the Jordan River, are referred to repeatedly in the Bible. These kingdoms were successively conquered by, or made tributary to, the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, and Romans. Jordan was wrested from the Byzantine Empire by the Arabs between 633 and 636 and has since remained an Arab-Islamic country. During the Crusades parts of Jordan were governed by Christians. From 1517 until 1918 Jordan was ruled by the Ottomans (see Ottoman Empire).

He recognized the unique character of the flint industry pottery art objects and designated the assemblage as the Yarmukian Culture after the nearby Yarmuk River (See *1 Below) ..... The Yarmukian Culture flourished in the second half of the sixth millennium circa 5600-5000 BC. Unlike the 7th millenniun in which the entire Levant was characterized by the same Pre-Pottery Neolithic B tradition in the 6th millennium the Levant is characterized by regional cultures. In this period we also observe a decline in the amount of obsidian and other raw material transfer in the region. It appears to be a time of cultural segregation where all the sites emphasized themselves by distinct elements of its material culture .....
