American President Lyndon Baines Johnson, 1908-1973
America's 36th President, Lyndon Baines Johnson, known throughout his political career as LBJ ascended to office as the grim successor to John F. Kennedy mere hours after the assassination of the beloved 35th President. Overshadowed by the legacy of a martyred leader and inheriting the Vietnam War, Johnson's accomplishments in the advancement of civil rights, space exploration and social support changed the America of the second half of the 20th century. Lyndon B. Johnson died of a sudden heart attack in 1973 at the age of 64. Born in Gillespie County, Texas on August 27th, 1908 Lyndon Baines Johnson was the first of 5 children of Sam Ealy Johnson, Jr. and his wife, Rebekah Baines. Despite prominent family backgrounds, Sam's family having founded Johnsonville Texas and Rebekah the college educated daughter of prominent statesman Joseph Baines, the Johnsons were poor. Sam Johnson had lost most of his money in speculation of cotton, and Lyndon was born in a 3-room frame house. Sam Johnson's fortunes gradually improved and he served as a member of the Texas state legislature.

Born on August 27, 1908, into a poor family in the Texas hill country, Lyndon Johnson was an average student but also seemed a natural leader among his peers. In 1927, he entered Southwest Texas State Teachers College. A prominent student, Johnson worked his way through school, graduating in three years. Next he taught English in Houston. In 1932, Johnson went to Washington as a legislative assistant to Representative Richard Kleberg. Doing most of the work, he became quite versed in the ways of Washington. In 1937, he ran for Congress himself as a Roosevelt New Dealer. In 1941, he ran for the Senate in a special election and lost. But he retained his House seat and continued his rise to prominence among congressional Democrats. During the war, Johnson served for a few months in a non-combat position. In 1948, Johnson ran again for the Senate, defeating his Democratic primary opponent in a runoff by only 87 votes amid loud accusations of fraud. He easily won the general election in the fall. In the Senate, Johnson quietly but quickly rose to prominence. In 1952, he became the Democratic leader in the Senate. He has been recognized as one of the ablest parliamentarians in U.S. history. In 1960, he sought his party's nomination for president but had to settle for the vice presidential slot, behind John Kennedy. As vice president, Johnson seemed out of place, with little of significance reaching his desk. That changed radically when Kennedy's assassination thrust him into the Oval Office in 1963.

Lyndon Baines Johnson, thirty-sixth U.S. President Announces Kennedy Death On the assassination of President Kennedy "All who love freedom will mourn his death." (Washington, D.C., November 23, 1963) At 12:30 p.m. on November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot while riding in an open-car motorcade through the streets of Dallas, Texas. He was pronounced dead 30 minutes later. Just after 2:09 p.m., Vice President Lyndon Johnson took the presidential oath of office aboard Air Force One. The oath was administered by Texas Judge Sarah T. Hughes and witnessed by some 30 people, including Jacqueline Kennedy, who was still wearing clothes stained with her husband's blood. The next day, November 23, President Johnson issued his first proclamation, declaring November 25 to be a day of national mourning for the slain president. On that Monday, hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets of Washington, D.C., to watch a horse-drawn caisson bear Kennedy's body from the Capitol Rotunda to St. Matthew's Catholic Cathedral for a requiem mass. The solemn procession then continued on to Arlington National Cemetery, where leaders of ninety-two nations gathered for the state funeral. Kennedy was buried with full military honors on a slope below Arlington House, where an eternal flame was lit by his widow to forever mark the grave.

Quotations: "I believe in the American tradition of separation of church and state which is expressed in the First Amendment to the Constitution. By my office and by personal conviction I am sworn to uphold that tradition." Interview, Baptist Standard , October, 1964 "This was the first nation in the history of the world to be founded with a purpose. The great phrases of that purpose still sound in every American heart, North and South: 'All men are created equal''government by consent of the governed''give me liberty or give me death.' Well, those are not just clever words, or those are not just empty theories. In their name Americans have fought and died for two centuries, and tonight around the world they stand there as guardians of our liberty, risking their lives. "Those words are a promise to every citizen that he shall share in the dignity of man. This dignity cannot be found in a man's possessions; it cannot be found in his power, or in his position. It really rests on his right to be treated as a man equal in opportunity to all others. It says that he shall share in freedom, he shall choose his leaders, educate his children, and provide for his family according to his ability and his merits as a human being.

http://www.who2.com/lyndonbjohnson.html
LYNDON B. JOHNSON U.S. President Lyndon Baines Johnson replaced the assassinated John F. Kennedy as U.S. president and presided over major social reforms as well as the expansion of the Vietnam War. Known as a politician's politician, "LBJ" was a senator from Texas and had been a powerful member of the Democratic party for two decades when he challenged Kennedy for the presidential nomination in 1960. (Republican president Dwight D. Eisenhower was stepping down after eight years.) Kennedy got the nod, then picked Johnson as his running mate. Kennedy beat Eisenhower's vice-president, Richard M. Nixon , in the general election, and Johnson became vice-president in 1961. But as fate would have it, Kennedy was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald on 22 November 1963 and Johnson succeeded to the presidency. Easily re-elected over staunch conservative Barry Goldwater in 1964, LBJ was able to pass sweeping social legislation including the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. His decision to escalate American involvement in Vietnam, however, proved to be extremely unpopular. He chose not to seek another term and retired in 1969; he was succeeded by none other than Richard Nixon.

, thirty-sixth president of the United States . Born in Stonewall, Texas, Johnson began his career as a speech and debate teacher. In 1937 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a New Deal Democrat. He joined the U.S. Senate in 1948 and served as majority leader from 1955 to 1961. After losing the 1960 presidential nomination to John F. Kennedy, Johnson agreed to run as vice president, and the Kennedy-Johnson ticket narrowly won the election of 1960 . Johnson succeeded to the presidency following Kennedy's assassination on November 22, 1963. He obtained support for civil rights legislation in 1964, and after his landslide victory in the presidential election of 1964 , he convinced Congress to pass his domestic programs for a Great Society . But his popularity waned because of his escalation of the Vietnam War . Johnson astounded the nation when he decided not to run for reelection in 1968 and retired to his ranch at Johnson City, Texas.
