In 1886, Grover Cleveland became the first, and only, president to be married in the White House. The residence of the U.S. president was called the "President's Palace," the "President's House," and the "Executive Mansion," before Theodore Roosevelt made "White House" the official name in 1901. John Adams was the first president to live in the White House.

Prewar Political Career. Johnson was popular with the small craftsmen of the town, and in 1829 he was elected councilman and later mayor of Greeneville; in 1835 he was sent to the state general assembly. Defeated in 1837, he was reelected in 1839. In the following year he actively campaigned for the Democratic party. He was elected to the state senate in 1841 and two years later to the U.S. House of Representatives, in which he served until 1853. In Congress, Johnson was known for his advocacy of cheap western land for homesteaders and support for the Mexican War. Twice elected (1853 and 1855) governor of Tennessee, in 1857 he was elevated to the U.S. Senate and again took up the fight for a homestead bill. The measure passed in 1860 but was vetoed by President James Buchanan

Seventeenth President 1865-1869
[Eliza McCardle Johnson]

November 2001
Fast Fact: Andrew Johnson faced impeachment for steadfastly opposing Radicals in Congress. Inauguration
On April 15, 1865, after visiting the wounded and dying President Lincoln in a house across the street from Ford's Theatre, the Vice President returned to his rooms at Kirkwood House. A few hours later he received the Cabinet and Chief Justice Salmon Chase in his rooms to take the executive oath of office. Biography: With the Assassination of Lincoln, the Presidency fell upon an old-fashioned southern Jacksonian Democrat of pronounced states' rights views. Although an honest and honorable man, Andrew Johnson was one of the most unfortunate of Presidents. Arrayed against him were the Radical Republicans in Congress, brilliantly led and ruthless in their tactics. Johnson was no match for them. Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1808, Johnson grew up in poverty. He was apprenticed to a tailor as a boy, but ran away. He opened a tailor shop in
Greeneville, Tennessee, married Eliza McCardle, and participated in debates at the local academy.

State Politics Johnson was one of the most unpopular Presidents But the American people realized during his lifetime that he had been treated unjustly Many historians feel that his acquittal in the impeachment trial saved the presidency from being weakened, with the President a more figurehead.

    Longevity of U.S. Presidents

Last updated 2 Sep 2000 Everyone knows that the average life span of humans has increased markedly in the 20th century, but has it increased for everyone? An informal study of U.S. presidents may yield some surprising answers. My aim is to look at the effect of medical advances over the last two centuries on the longevity of those who are most likely to have access to those advances. I think presidents make an interesting (if small) sample because of their demographic uniformity: all are white male politicians, almost all are military veterans, and presumably all had sufficient wealth and/or prestige to command whatever medical resources were available in their later years. Of the 41 men who have held the office, 5 are still alive (Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton), 4 were victims of homicide, all from gunfire (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy)*, and 32 died of natural causes (4 while in office: Harrison, Taylor, Harding, FD Roosevelt). These 32 are listed below by date of death. The "ordinal" figure is the order in which each served as president, Cleveland having served two non-consecutive terms. NAME ORD-

Text Only 1963: Johnson takes over as US president Fifty-five year old Lyndon Baines Johnson begins his new job today as US president. He was sworn in yesterday just two hours after an assassin shot President John F Kennedy in the head. The former vice-president took his oath on the presidential plane at Andrew's Air Force Base. The new first lady, Claudia Alta Taylor Johnson, witnessed the swearing-in together with the dead president's widow Jacqui Kennedy - her stocking still stained with her husband's blood. The party flew to Washington with the assassinated president's coffin after the ceremony. Path to power On arriving in Washington the president said, "I will do my best. That is all I can do." President Johnson will address a joint session of Congress on in three day's time where it is likely he will outline his future programme. Commentators say there probably will be little immediate change in policy with a presidential election on the horizon.

    Abstract
    From the Paper:

"As a matter of fact, neither author really tells us much about Johnson, or even how he was nominated as Lincoln's vice-president. In 1864, as the Republicans re-nominated Lincoln, they nominated Johnson, who was perhaps the most militant Unionist serving in the South, as vice president. It was, in a way, a reward for helping to pass a law in Tennessee which abolished slavery in perpetuity. Thus, a Jacksonian Democrat became the running mate for the Republican President, Lincoln."
