Theurpose of a resume is to secure an interview. It is the primary tool of your job search and may take several drafts to prepare effectively. This article is designed to assist you by offering suggestions and guidelines for you to use as you construct, write and print your resume. Building An Effective Resume
I. Self-Assessment
Before you can write an effective resume, you must first be able to identify your skills and abilities as well as your special needs relating to the work environment, salary, geographic location, and people environment. This step will help you to develop a career objective. The following exercises will help you identify some things about yourself which you may want to express in your resume.
Self-Assessment Exercise
A. List at least 10 skills which you have developed in each of the following areas: Education/Work/Internships or Volunteer/Extracurricular. Use action words todevelop one-liner summaries.
B. Circle each of the skills noted in part A that you would like to use in your employment. Are there other talents you possess that you would like to use on the job? If so, add them to the list of circled skills. Now rank these skills in order of those you most want to use.

Employers on campus
A number of graduate employers and professional organisations visit the campus during the Autumn and Spring terms. They visit for several purposes:
Presentations
These give you a chance to find out about an organisation or profession before applying and can represent a valuable opportunity to talk to recent recruits about what the job is really like.
Interviews
Employers who visit to interview, however, are inviting you to apply to them via the Careers Service by a given closing date. They will then decide whom they wish to interview on the dates they have arranged to visit. Applying in this way may mean that you can have your first interview at a more convenient location.
Fairs and other events
Employers attending fairs or running workshops are keen to talk to students about the opportunities they have or to offer advice on their particular area of work or a specific aspect of job hunting, for example writing an effective CV. Attending these events can be very valuable to you in your career planning.

Recruitment agencies and job related websites
Why use a recruitment agency? Recruitment agencies have always played a significant part in recruitment generally, but they are beginning to play an even bigger role in graduate recruitment. Many recruitment agencies specialise in areas such as IT, accountancy, marketing, personnel, and advertising and sales. They tend to know their specialist area extremely well and they offer not only temporary vacancies, but are also becoming another useful source of permanent graduate opportunities. Back to top

Process and Pitfalls of Academic Job Hunting
24 OCTOBER 1997
E nvision yourself getting a call from a research institute in response to your job applicationthey want to interview you! Now envision yourself making small talk with the recruiting committee, their grad students and postdocs, the chair of the departmentand being judged on your relative intellectual and social graces. If the small talk part of the interview process scares the living daylights out of you, fear not. Some thoughtful words from Jonathan Dantzig may prevent you from getting into multiple stressful situations while applying for academic (as well as nonacademic) jobs. Dantzig has the upper hand when it comes to insider information on applying for academic jobs, because he's been the chair of his department's faculty recruiting committee at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. It looks like Dantzig has suffered through interviews (on the interviewer's end) with qualified applicants who had no idea of what they were doing in the face-to-face interviews. He prefaces his Web page by stating his goal of helping applicants "avoid making the simple mistakes that obscure your professional qualifications"and perhaps making his life and that of other recruiting faculty members easier in the process.
