  • When Job-Hunting: Dress for Success
by Randall S. Hansen, Ph.D. It's probably one of the most overused phrases in job-hunting, but also one of the most underutilized by job-seekers: dress for success. In job-hunting, first impressions are critical. Remember, you are marketing a product yourself to a potential employer, and the first thing the employer sees when greeting you is your attire; thus, you must make every effort to have the proper dress for the type of job you are seeking. Will dressing properly get you the job? Of course not, but it will give you a competitive edge and a positive first impression. Should you be judged by what you wear? Perhaps not, but the reality is, of course, that you are judged. Throughout the entire job-seeking process employers use short-cuts heuristics or rules of thumb to save time. With cover letters, it's the opening paragraph and a quick scan of your qualifications. With resumes, it is a quick scan of your accomplishments. With the job interview, it's how you're dressed that sets the tone of the interview. How should you dress? Dressing conservatively is always the safest route, but you should also try and do a little investigating of your prospective employer so that what you wear to the interview makes you look as though you fit in with the organization. If you overdress (which is rare but can happen) or underdress (the more likely scenario), the potential employer may feel that you don't care enough about the job.

It wasn't a question he could be useful.
Anybody could be useful when you decided where they fit.
    That was what business was.

    Pete Dexter, Deadwood
Do you want a job? Follow-up is the only technique that influences the person who interviewed you. You may think you can get a job through a search firm, answering an ad, networking, or directly contacting a company. But what you get are interviews, not jobs.
Follow-up is the way to turn those interviews into jobs. One approach to your job hunt may be like this:
Develop a list of companies in your target area. Find the names of the people you should see in each company. Somehow get in to see them (through a search firm, an ad, networking or direct contact). So far, you are getting interviews in your target area. You are not job hunting yet. You prove your mettle by seeing howover the long-runyou can turn each interview into a job. Now you're job hunting. And that's where follow-up comes in. Remember, you generally don't want a job offer at that first meeting. An easy hire decision may mean an easy fire decision later. Instead, establish a long-term relationship. It is not unusual to be brought in for anywhere from three to nine or more interviews.

Careers in Sales Sales is where the rubber meets the road for any company that produces a good or a service. Without a highly skilled and motivated sales staff, businesses of all kinds would be writing their obituaries. Sales is a very competitive field that offers good communicators, self-starters, and product experts the opportunity to earn high incomes. But the pressure to produce, especially in a field where compensation is performance-based, can mean quick turnover and job instability. If you thrive under pressure, enjoy forging new working relationships daily, and can roll with the punches, a career in the vast field of sales could offer you opportunities across all industries.

    MARKETING
Apart from chasing each and every employment opportunity, marketing yourself requires competence in two principal areas; CV Writing and Interview Technique
    CV Writing
The Curriculum Vitae or Résumé is an advertisement for the individual, whose objective is to show what you have to offer in a compact and easily-digestible form. The principal purpose of a CV is to secure an interview but it can also provide a useful structure for the said interview. A good CV is your primary marketing tool.
    Interview Technique
Interviews are far from being the perfect method of assessing a person's ability to perform in a particular role. However, for most candidates, success or failure depends on a single interview lasting perhaps 45 minutes.
