The cover letter should be personalized for every job you apply for. Letter Writing Tips. cover letters Thank You letters. Letter Creators
http://www.tbrnet.com/letters/tips.php
Cover Letters
  • The cover letter should be personalized for every job you apply for.
  • Use "Sincerely" as your closing.
  • The paper should match the paper you used for your resume.
  • Make sure that you are addressing the person correctly. If I am the Human Resources director, then I wouldn't want my name misspelled.
  • A little extra that I personally use: Paper Direct has paper that has business cards embedded in the lower corner. Most cover letters are not kept, but they can punch out your business card and keep that.
Thank You Letters
  • Thank you letters should be sent out within two days of the interview.
  • A resume should be included with the thank you letter.
  • If you forget to mention a point in your interview this is the perfect place to bring it up.
  • Mention that you are looking forward to hearing the decision of the employer.

How to Write Appealing Cover Letters
By MARY MORRIS HEIBERGER and JULIA MILLER VICK Question: I'm applying for faculty positions. My C.V., letters of recommendation, and teaching-philosophy statement are all strong. However, I am a little dubious about the cover letter. I wrote one and have used it, with some changes, for each application. My question: How should one tailor the cover letter to the specific institution? I feel that I am being false or artificial if I openly state what the advertisement wants me to say. What is the fine line between tailoring the letter to the specific requests of any given college and pushing it too far? Mary: I'd say that honesty defines the boundary. If something is true, and you believe it would incline a search committee to want to interview you, don't hesitate to stress it, as directly and persuasively as possible. If something isn't true, don't say it. Julie: For years we have had programs where faculty members from various institutions talk about the academic job search. They all state, in one way or another, that they like to see cover letters that indicate that the writer knows something about the institution and is writing to apply for their specific job, not for any and every job. Mary: A letter written for a particular job, and even a particular advertisement, not only shows that you are qualified for and interested in the position but is also easier to read. If the ad mentions that four things are desired, and your letter explicitly makes reference to all four, even someone who is skimming job materials can quickly flag your application for further consideration.

Job Hunting Correspondence Guidelines Cover letters, should always be provided as an introduction to your resume, but are not the only letters you'll need. While job hunting you may also need to write letters that precede, follow-up or confirm verbal conversations with potential IT employers. These letters are a record of interactions and provide the employer with additional evidence of your communication skills. Never send a resume without a cover letter. Your cover letter should explain "why" you are sending a resume and "why" the employer should take the time to read it. Be specific and indicate exactly what you are interested in: a specific position, internship, possible future openings. Entice the employer to look at your resume by providing a well written cover letter that is targeted specifically to that employer. A cover letter should:
  • Call attention to key components of your background.

Take Your Time
With Cover Letters
By J OANN S L UBLIN
Staff Reporter of The Wall Street Journal From The Wall Street Journal Online Eager to snare a hot job opening, you quickly scribble a cover letter and attach it to your flawless résumé. Too bad. You probably just blew your chance to be hired. Your hastily written missive missed the mark and you misspelled the target company's name. A great cover letter is the golden key to any job search. Yet despite a glut of advice books and Web sites, an estimated 85% of cover letters are so flawed that senders never land an interview, career coaches say. Even experts err. An "ideal" letter sent to me by one career counselor contained this sentence fragment in the first paragraph: "With a great deal of interest." Looking elsewhere for how to craft a compelling cover letter, I turned to Lisa Jacobson, a frustrated small-business owner, and Deborah J. Storz, a marketing specialist whom she hired last spring. Their sage advice may be worth heeding as the employment rebound gathers speed.

Job Interview Tips
Once you have identified a job that is of interest to you, contact the supervisor to confirm the availability of the job and to schedule an interview. The application and interview process differs among student jobs. Some supervisors may request that you send a resume and/or cover letter prior to the interview, or they may inform you that you will need to complete an employment application when you arrive for the interview. Student job interviews are often fairly informal. However, while on an interview, you should:
  • Dress appropriately
