Job-hunting Strategies for Trailing Spouses
by Blanche Evans
You're moving. Again. And once again, your spouse's career takes precedence and yours is back at square one. Even if you are in total agreement with the move, you will still experience two of the highest stress factors in existance simultaneously - moving and unemployment. Along with death of a family member, loss of a spouse, and disaster, moving and being unemployed rank among the top five stress producers. To be faced with two of the top stressers simultaneously requires the marshalling of all your survival and recovery instincts. You're moving to make life better, but that is only true if moving is best for both of you and the rest of the members of your family. Your job as the transferred spouse is to make the best of the transition. Finding the right employment situation will get you well on the road to accomplishing that goal.

http://faculty.law.lsu.edu/toddbruno/sage_advice.htm
SAGE ADVICE
from University of Georgia Career Services web site 1. Perspective rules! Remember, your first job is not the sum total of your legal career. Always keep your perspective, and realize that any good career has many steps. Just as applying to law school was one step, and surviving first semester exams was another, your summer and first full-time jobs will be other steps in building your legal career. 2. If at first you don't succeed.... Perhaps just as important as thinking in terms of your overall career, it is essential to remember that there are many paths to your career goals. If one door seems to close, look for another - let us help you find another path! Not everyone gets their first job through OCI, or through job listings. Not everyone starts out in their "dream job" for the summer or following graduation. But you have what it takes to get where you want to be. Remember that chances are you will be working for another 50 years (give or take a few) so there's plenty of time to find your way to your dream job. 3. Look for YOUR dream job. Not someone else's. It's very easy to get caught up in the pressures of peers or family, or to take the path of least resistance, and to end up with a job that you never really intended to get in the first place. Remember what brought you to law school. If your goals have changed, know why. Recognize and work towards your key values. What is it YOU really want to do, and why? It's OK to dabble and explore a variety of legal career options, but be true to yourself and know what it is that will make you happy, and don't be swayed by the pressures you might encounter to do what other people think is right for you. It's your life and your career - the main person who needs to be happy with the choices is you.

Job Hunting Strategies
The most common method of job hunting is to read through the employment section of the major daily newspapers, like the Age and the Australian. However, only 30% of jobs are advertised. The remainder form what is referred to as the 'hidden job market'. The idea behind creative job hunting is to use multiple job search methods. To get you started, read the information below.

Recruitment agencies
Many companies and government departments now use recruitment agencies to recruit staff. There are literally hundreds of recruitment agencies operating in Melbourne, most agencies will specialise in particular industries or jobs, such as engineering, finance, media, etc. Others specialise in certain levels of jobs, such as executive recruitment or graduate recruitment . Some specialise in international positions.
