"This collection is extremely important to people whose Russian ancestors came to the U.S. in the 19th century," states Gary Mokotoff, leading expert on Jewish immigration. Search passenger list information for approximately 430,000 individuals, largely those of Jewish heritage. This is the only electronic index for passenger arrivals from Russia prior to 1896. Now researchers have an "excellent chance" of finding their ancestors' passenger arrival information, says Mokotoff. Produced alongside the Balch Institute, the information you can obtain from this data set can help you create a well-rounded picture of your ancestor's arrival in America.

Immigration Locating the previous overseas residence Finding your family village name: You must find your ancestor’s community's name before you will be able to locate ancestral records that were recorded in the "old country." This will usually require beginning research in the U.S., or whatever your home country, to determine the correct community. First, begin with yourself. Gather everything you know about your own origins: where you were born, what religion you were raised in, your own civil and religious records. Then go back one generation at a time, looking for all of the available information you have. Where did your parents live? Where were they born? Gather their records. Sometimes even the smallest detail can lead you on the path to discovery. At times, you will not be able to locate a particular record for a parent or grandparent. If that is the case, look for records of their siblings. Often those will have the information you seek.

Get out those old shoe boxes, start reading and really look at the details. Old letters often contain family connections, dates, locations and hints to lead you in the right direction. The same applies to old photographs which may have names and dates, or the photograpy studio or photographer’s name. Address books, postcards and, of course, family Bibles contain information and clues. Deeds, marriage certificates, naturalization papers, social security papers, Wills, and even insurance policies can be sources for information. I found one great-great grandmother’s address in Poland in an old personal address book which was about to be thrown out when her granddaughter passed on.

    Introduction
The State Records Office (SRO) holds numerous records relating to the arrival and departure of passengers and crew from both overseas and interstate. Passenger records are an important resource for those undertaking family history research and are particularly useful for researchers attempting to trace the arrival of immigrants to Western Australia during the pre-Federation period. In addition to inwards and outwards passenger and crew lists, the SRO also maintains considerable records dealing with the administration and implementation of several early immigration schemes. Passenger Indexes
To assist in accessing information from the Inward and Outward Passenger Lists housed within the SRO, a number of indexes to passenger names have been created.
