further pictures: In the courtyard of the Museum tombstones from the 13th and 14th centuries give evidence of the local Jewish community during the Middle Ages. A collection of Judaica draws attention to the Jewish customs and cemonies. Important silver objects from famous goldsmith-centres represent highlights and are standing next to simple artifacts of brass, tin, wood, and pewter and richly embroidered textiles from rural surroundings. Valuable Hebrew prints from the 16th century onwards and documents from the first Zionistic Congress, held in Basel in 1897, are added.
The latestly opened gallery is dedicated to the Jewish wedding ceremonies. A wedding dress and traditional presents for bridegroom and bride are exhibited next to documents and objects concerning divorce and its biblical roots. Wedding tunes enhance the joyful atmosphere.

Czech SRO Company Formations Czech Business Weekly Subscribe today! Present at the establishment of the Jewish Museum in Prague in 1906 were the historian Dr. Hugo Lieben and Dr. Augustin Stein, the representative of the Czech Jewish movement and later head of the Prague Jewish Community. The original aim was to preserve valuable artefacts from the Prague synagogues that had been demolished during the reconstruction of the Jewish Town at the beginning of the 20th century. The Museum was closed to the public after the Nazi occupation of Bohemia and Moravia on 15 March 1939. In 1942 the Nazis established the Central Jewish Museum, to which were shipped artefacts from all the liquidated Jewish communities and synagogues of Bohemia and Moravia. Its founding was proposed by Dr. Stein who, in co-operation with other specialist members of staff, sought to save the Jewish objects that were being conficated by the Nazis. Following long negotiations, the Nazis approved the project to set up a central museum, albeit guided by different motives than the Museum´s founders. The Manchester Jewish Museum tells the history of Jewish people in Manchester since the 18th century. It has a collection of photographs, documents and room settings which help visitors gain an impression of the people who arrived here during various periods of Jewish immigration - largely as a result of European wars and anti-Semitic pogroms. There are also telephone handset recordings of memories from earlier this century, made by Manchester inhabitants who lived through those times. The museum was originally a Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue which was built in 1874, but it has been a museum since 1984.
The downstairs synagogue has been fully restored to its original splendour with lavish Moorish décor and fine stained glass. Upstairs is a permanent exhibition of Manchester's Jewish history. An admission charge is payable. Groups should be booked in advance. Temporary exhibitions are frequently held, Educational Service, Guides, Shop, Car Parking, Evening visits by arrangement. Disabled access to ground floor only.

About the Museum
The Jewish Museum aims to increase knowledge and understanding of Jewish history, culture and religious life, as part of Britain's diverse heritage. In 1995 the Jewish Museum relocated to an elegant, early Victorian listed building in the vibrant neighbourhood of Camden Town. In the same year it amalgamated, on a two-site basis, with the former London Museum of Jewish Life, in Finchley, North London (now The Jewish Museum - Finchley). The London Museum of Jewish Life was founded in 1983 as the Museum of the Jewish East End, with the aim of rescuing and preserving the disappearing heritage of London's East End - the heartland of Jewish settlement in Britain. While the East End has remained an important focus, the Museum expanded to reflect the diverse roots and social history of Jewish people across London. It also developed an acclaimed programme of Holocaust and anti-racist education. Together, the two museum sites tell the story of Jewish life in Britain, through wide-ranging collections, exhibitions, events and educational programmes.

The Jewish Museum in Stockholm In 1774, Sweden permitted its first Jewish settler, Aaron Isaac. Via the permanent exhibition, the history of Sweden's Jewish population is followed from its first settler to the present day, depicting the Jews integration into Swedish society. Their contributions to Swedish culture, science, industry and trade are illustrated with visual material and guided tours. Past and present religious practices are illuminated with artifacts, books and objects. The Holocaust is represented with a presentation of a replica of the Raoul Wallenberg statue in Budapest, A Swedish citizenship protection pass for Hungarian Jews, a sculpture by the Italian artist Mirella Patruno "The Nightmare of Suffering", among other historic documentation. The current exhibition: In the Shadow of War: Sweden's Jews 19331945 For the very first time, in Sweden's history after the Second World War, has the subject of Jewish life under a nonoccupied regime, been examined and explored. Through the use of archival material, film, and "experimential" themes, the public has been invited to listen, feel, and possibly reexperience the extremely unique situation the Jews of Sweden found themselves in, this while simultaneously given a personal and intimate view into the horrors of the reality of bordering countries and other close neighbors.
