by Grace Cohen Grossman The only book that presents the breadth of existing Jewish museums Since the beginning of the Diaspora, almost two thousand years ago, Jews have been wandering, all the while influencing and being influenced by the communities where they have settled. This active exchange resulted in a tremendously rich variety in even the simplest of traditional and ceremonial objects. Today, hundreds of museums around the world share in the responsibility of protecting and celebrating the beauty, variety, and tradition of the Jewish way of life and the Judaic objects that the worldwide Jewish community has generated. Nineteenth-century Jewish museums sought to engage a non-Jewish audience, hoping that the objective study of Jewish customs would diminish the age-old negative stereotypes of the Jewish people. The twentieth century has seen the establishment of museums that celebrate the importance and the depth of Jewish history for Jews and non-Jews alike. With the decimation of the eastern European Jewish population as a result of the Holocaust, one of the first Jewish museums was created in Germany and, although meant to be a museum of an extinct people, the Germans amassed the greatest single collection of Judaica yet in existence. Today, Jewish museums in Central and Eastern Europe are creating their exhibitions and programs in places where there are few remnants of the once-thriving communities. In America, the Jewish museum mission finds the links to the rich, vibrant history of Jewish life in America and elsewhere.

Jewish Museum
"The Jewish Museum is a major American art museum, but also the largest Jewish museum in the Western hemisphere. Art is its primary medium of communication; yet the Museum's permanent exhibition presents, within an historical context, the multiple facets of Jewish identity as it has emerged during more than four millenia."
Current and Upcoming Exhibitions
At The Museum by Jason Wiggins
The Jewish Museum, located on the same avenue of culture as the Met Guggenheim and Cooper-Hewitt , has a design style different from many other museums. The towers and windows make the building look, ironically, like a Gothic church, much different from the buildings next door, which are mostly plain and square. There is more to the Jewish Museum than meets the eye; unlike many other museums on Museum Mile, the Jewish Museum takes up all of the floor of its building. The galleries are arranged in a circuitous style which allows for a lot of material to be put on display and makes floor plans a necessity. The permanent exhibit, located on the top two floors, presents the history of the Jewish people starting more than four thousand years ago. Since the exhibit is presented in chronological order, it makes the most sense to start at the beginning on the fourth floor and walk your way down through time.

Overview

Spanning two floors and four thousand years, the Jewish Museum’s sweeping permanent exhibition takes an ambitious, largely successful stab at defining a plurality of Jewish identities and at deciphering just how Judaism has managed to survive so much for so long. Thankfully, the exhibit, “Culture and Continuity: The Jewish Journey,” is broken down into four visitor-friendly, thematic chunks, beginning on the top floor and proceeding downwards in chronological order. Expect artifacts from the ancient world, objects used for worship, engravings, torah scrolls, maps, personal testimonies, photographs and even video footage.
The Jewish Museum’s acquisitions extend well beyond “Culture and Continuity” to encompass 28,000 odd pieces, with works by heavyweights such as Max Weber, Elie Nadelman, Mark Rothko, and Alfred Stieglitz. Temporary exhibitions tend to draw a larger, broader audience. Case in point: during its centennial summer of 2004, the museum hosted a highly popular and praised special exhibition, “Modigliani: Beyond the Myth.”

90-YEAR OLD INSTITUTION UNDERGOES MAJOR REVIVAL AND EXPANSION UNDER JEWISH COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP
The Jewish Museum in Prague, founded in 1906, celebrated its 90th anniversary in 1996. Despite a tumultuous history, the institution is now growing – aggressively addressing problems of inventory, care, preservation, and restoration of the important artifacts and monuments in its collection. With over 35,000 objects from Bohemia and Moravia, the Jewish Museum possesses one of the most extensive collections of Judaica in the world. A number of historic sites, including the Old Jewish Cemetery, the Pinkus Synagogue, the Ceremonial Hall, the Klaus Synagogue, the Maisel Synagogue and the Spanish Synagogue are all under the Museum's care.
The objective of the museum when it was created was to "collect, preserve and exhibit ritual items of household and synagogue worship as well as archive materials, manuscripts and illustrations of Jewish monuments and personalities." The museum staged its first exhibition in 1909 and continued to present exhibits until the German Occupation in 1939 when the Museum Association was dissolved. Dr. Karel Stein, fearing the destruction of Jewish artifacts, negotiated with the Nazis to establish the Central Jewish Museum to preserve and exhibit artistic and historical objects of the pre-war Jewish communities. Although his intention to preserve the objects was successful in the end, the Nazis viewed the museum in a very different light as a "museum of an extinct race."

Museum to Create 50,000-square-foot Multi-Faceted Arts Center for Jewish Cultural Programming and Perspective Expanded Institution to Include Facilities for Major Exhibitions, Adult and Youth Education, and Community-Wide Programs San Francisco, June 12, 1996 The Jewish Museum San Francisco today announced that it has launched a major initiative for expanding the scale, range, and reach of its programming with the selection of Peter Eisenman as the architect for its new facility in the Yerba Buena district of downtown San Francisco. The Jewish Museum, founded twelve years ago to provide a forum for exploring the Jewish contribution to American society and the ongoing evolution of contemporary American Jewish culture, had long outgrown its current space in the downtown Jewish Community Federation building. Creation of the institution's first museum building was stimulated in response to both the growing interest of the Jewish community to explore its own culture and identity in contemporary society, and the need to broaden and enliven the dialogue among all the diverse heritages that form the greater Bay Area community. The new museum is slated for completion in 1999. Fred Levinson, President of the Jewish Museum comments, "Since its founding in 1984, the Jewish Museum's core mission has been to foster an understanding of Jewish traditions and perspectives within the context of contemporary culture. The diverse programming of the museum is a reflection of core Jewish values of inquiry, dialogue and respect for diversity. The Jewish Museum has played an important ongoing role in the community, and with the expansion program, we are reinventing ourselves as a full-service institution by establishing a level of programming that is commensurate with the public's needs and expectations."

Jewsih archaeology, numismatics, fine arts, ethnography, various exhibits on Jewish culture. Dedicated to presenting the remarkable scope and diversity of Jewish culture, the Museum serves today as a unique source of insight and inspiration for all people. Visitors to the Museum enjoy an art experience which captures 4,000 years of Jewish life and culture. In 1904, Judge Mayer Sulzberger presented his library and 26 ceremonial objects to The Jewish Theological Seminary of America to serve as the initial establishment of a Jewish museum. From this modest beginning, and through the generosity of many patrons and collectors, the collections grew. By 1944, when Mrs. Felix M. Warburg, a member of the Seminary's Board of Directors, offered her home for use as a Jewish museum, the collections were more than worthy of the proposed new setting. On May 8, 1947, the Museum opened in the French Gothic-style Warburg Mansion, on Fifth Avenue at 92nd Street. A gift from Mr. and Mrs. Albert A. List provided funds for much needed additional space, and the new List building, adjoining the Warburg home, opened in 1963. In 1993, the Museum expanded and totally renovated its buildings to increase space for gallery, office and education use.

The museum's collection includes Jewish ceremonial pieces, art, photographs and cultural artifacts, as well as works by Jewish artists like Marc Chagall and Frank Stella (and most recently, Modigliani). The first thing to realize about the Jewish Museum is that it is not a Holocaust museum. There is only one small section of the permanent exhibition devoted to the Holocaust. According to a museum tour guide, the size of the exhibit, "The Shoah," reflects the small proportion of this period of time to the entire history of Judaism. The museum itself is quite large, covering four stories, but is manageable in an afternoon. The first two floors house the special exhibitions while the top two have the permanent exhibition and the Children's Gallery, which houses an exhibit for children and families on Jewish holidays.
