To understand the change from eclipse to academic recognition of this literature, it is crucial that I describe the three major waves of immigration across the Atlantic Ocean: the crypto-Jewish in the colonial period; the Askhenazic between 1880 and 1930, with additional immigrations at the time of World War II; and the Sephardic, from parts of the former Ottoman Empire that started around 1880 and lasted into the 1970s. Carvajal was the nephew of Don Luis de Carvajal the Older, a formidable conquistador, a "pacifier" of the Indies, whose reputation brought him an appointment by the kings as governor of the New Kingdom of Leon, in northern Mexico. The younger Carvajal, his sisters, and mother were brought to Mexico by their famous relative. It was the humanitarian atmosphere, fostered by his uncle, that encouraged El Iluminado to explore his Jewish roots, acknowledged by various members of the family but kept under wraps by the Inquisition.

To do justice to the literature of Judaism even in outline, it is clearly necessary to include the Bible, the Apocrypha, and the writings of Alexandrian Jews, such as Philo. Description Staff Research
Description:

This division offers a program of study in comparative Jewish literature as an imaginative discourse on the Jewish experience in our time. Publications include a book on the Holocaust and the literary imagination, By Words Alone (University of Chicago Press; finalist for the National Jewish Book award) and a study of exile and homecoming in the modern Jewish imagination, Booking Passage (University of California Press; finalist for the Koret Jewish Book Award)as well as numerous articles on subjects ranging from representations of the Holocaust in fiction, poetry, drama, and film to the reconfigurations of "Diaspora" and "Zion" in modern Jewish literature. The premises of this division are that Jewish literature as it has emerged over the past century and a half has mirrored, and helped to reconfigure, Jewish history and its cultural paradigms; that the shifting centers of Jewish civilization belong to a global conversation; and that the objective in our teaching and research is to get beyond the dialectics of mutual exclusion in order to create mutually engaging and ultimately liberating cultural dialogues. Courses offered range from "Topsy-Turvy: America and the Jewish Story" to "Agnon and the Land of Israel," from "Is Life Beautiful? The Holocaust and the Limits of Representatio" to "Jewish Literature: Place and Displacement."

Learning the language enables students to engage with the study of historical, literary and religious texts, as well as the politics, folklore, anthropology, or contemporary Hebrew culture through film and media. The program offers a variety of upper division courses in these areas, making it possible for students to create a concentration in HJCS. Summary: All concentrators in HJCS are required to complete HJCS 100: Peoples of the Middle East . A HJCS concentrator must complete four terms of Hebrew (HJCS 101, 102, 201, 202) and five additional courses, including advanced Hebrew (HJCS 301), two upper-division courses taught in Hebrew or which require the reading of Hebrew texts, and two additional courses in the division in the fields of Jewish, Israeli or Hebrew literature, history, or culture. A student who is placed out of HJCS 301 is required to take an additional Hebrew course. The concentrator must also complete two elective cognate courses outside HJCS.
