Jewish heritage in Russian children's literature
Olga Maeots
Russia
Paper
When I was invited to speak about Jewish heritage in Russian children's literature, I was firstly taken aback and didn't know what to answer. On the one hand a considerable part of Russian children's writers are Jews: Samuil Marshak - a founder of modern Russian children's literature, a man who considerably influenced it's development and brought up several generations of writers; wonderful poets - Jakov Akhim, Genrich Sapgir, Viktor Lunin, Junna Moritz; famous writers - Viktor Dragunsky, Anatoly Aleksin - just to name everyone will take all my time. Our literature is traditionally multinational, writers of dozens various nationalities have contributed to it's creation - Armenians, Byelorussians, Kalmyks, Ukrainians. They have accepted and developed traditions of Russian classical literature, but also brought their own national spirit as their contribution. A precious gift! So I don't want to fish up different national motives from the common trend. Let's try to approach the problem in another way. As the saying goes, language is writer's motherland. Language is a magical crystal of every national literature. It is known that alongside with a great Russian literature, there were and are literatures in national languages, among others - Jewish.

JTS offers the only program that explores the full range of Jewish literary creativity, from medieval to modern times. Unlike other universities, we do not make students choose from among Hebrew, Yiddish, Judeo-Arabic or Jewish writing in European languages. Our Jewish Literature Department offers thematic courses that cut across linguistic and temporal boundaries. Students achieve proficiency in the language(s) of their choice. As a general rule, literature courses in a specific language (Hebrew or Yiddish) are also taught in that language, thereby bringing students even closer to the modes of self-expression being studied. Students elect specialization in Medieval Hebrew Literature, Modern Hebrew Literature or Modern Yiddish Literature and work toward the MA, DHL and PhD degrees.

Honoring Jewish Literature
By DEBORAH HIRSCH
It’s like the Pulitzer Prize of the Jewish literary community. The National Jewish Book Awards have been honoring notable works for more than 50 years, gaining status as a mark of excellence in both secular and religious communities. But the awards’ special place in the Jewish community holds a little extra significance for some of those who organize and receive them. “The biggest thing is to get that kind of recognition from your peers and your community,” says Samuel G. Freedman, 47, a former New York Times reporter and journalism professor at Columbia University who won the 2000 nonfiction award for Jew vs. Jew: The Struggle for the Soul of American Jewry This year’s 53rd annual awards reception will be held in December at the Center for Jewish History in New York. Though the awards officially started in 1948, their origins stem from a Jewish book week that began in the mid ’20s. The week grew into a month, held in the springtime to coincide with the Jewish scholar’s holiday, Lag B’omer. By the early ’40s the book month was shifted closer to the secular book-buying season in the fall, and now usually takes place one month before Hanukah. “The goal of the awards is to heighten awareness of the best books on Jewish topics each year,” says Carolyn Starman Hessel, director of the Jewish Book Council, which administrates the awards.

Rabbinic literature
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Rabbinic literature , in the broadest sense, can mean the entire spectrum of Judaism 's rabbinic writing/s throughout history. However, the term often used as an exact cognate of the Hebrew term Sifrut Hazal (ספרות חז"ל; "Literature [of our] Sages, [of] blessed memory"), where the latter usually refers specifically to literature from the Talmudic era. The latter, more specific, sense is how the term is normally used in medieval and modern rabbinic writing (where Hazal normally refers only to the sages of the Talmudic era), and in contemporary academic writing (where "rabbinic literature" refers to Talmud, Midrash, and related writings, but hardly ever to later texts). This article discusses rabbinic literature in both senses. It begins with the classic rabbinic literature of the Talmudic era ( Sifrut Hazal ), and then adds a broad survey of rabbinic writing from later periods. The term meforshim , or parshanim is also used in modern-day yeshiva 's (i.e. Talmudical academies), denoting the " rabbinical commentaries" of the "commentators", see below for further elucidation.
