Story by Annabelle Gurwitch / Recipes by Marge Perry
I've been looking for some holiday spirit all my life. It started in Miami Beach, where I grew up as a Reform Jew in the '70s. Outside of watching Star Trek together, my family didn't cling to a lot of rituals. Occasionally, we sat through temple, where the congregation meditated on current fashions and the service was accompanied by a guitar-playing youth leader singing "Blowin' in the Wind." I even traveled to a kibbutz in Israel, where my class harvested peaches and consumed so many of them that when not in the fields, we were holed up in the community bathroom house while our Israeli guide strummed "Blowin' in the Wind" to help us endure the lonely hours. Although a lifelong love of Bob Dylan was instilled, all in all, this did not bode well for me and Judaism. The joyous spiritual connection I was looking for never quite enveloped me. Next followed a period of chanting in ashrams, visiting channelers, and attending Christian church. I loved chanting in the ashram, but I didn't like the people that is, I didn't like the kind of people who would go to an ashram. I'm not a group person. I obtained an introduction to a woman who channeled the spirits of the trees. Surprisingly, tree fairies don't have much to tell us. And I've always liked Jesus he seems to me the kind of guy who would give up his parking space for you if you really needed it but I just couldn't get into the church as an institution.

Hamantaschen ... Challah Bread Pudding By Greg Patent The laughter at the other end of the line was my brother's. "You can't be serious," he said, catching his breath. "Low-fat Jewish treats? Isn't that an oxymoron?" Of course, I knew where he was coming from. While growing up, my two Jewish grandmothers fed me delicious and irresistible cookies, cakes, and desserts year-round. Jewish holidays, besides being religious celebrations, are centered around food. And sweet treats are the hallmark of many of these occasions. There are so many Jewish holidays, I often wonder how it was possible for my grandmothers to keep up. Even though we were living in wartime Shanghai, where food was not always plentiful, nothing prevented them from going all-out. When it came to desserts, the rule was sweet, eggy, nutty, fruity, and buttery. That's why my brother was laughing so hard. At Passover, for example, when flour and leavenings such as yeast, baking powder, or baking soda are forbidden, it's quite a challenge to make a cake that will not only rise but maintain its shape after cooling. Ground nuts often replace flour in Passover cakes, and beaten eggs substitute for leavening agents. But the large quantities needed are out of the question when one is cooking light.

Let kids help prepare the seder by Bea Lewis
of 6 The kitchen is a terrific classroom for children any time of year. But holiday cooking provides a learning opportunity not to be missed.
Recognizing this, author Joan Nathan has written THE CHILDREN'S JEWISH HOLIDAY KITCHEN (Schocken Books), a cookbook that invites parents and children to explore holiday traditions and beliefs together as they cook. "When children help you cook for a holiday," says Nathan, "they learn the meaning of that holiday." The book features a collection of Jewish Holiday recipes, with tasks divided between children and adults. The recipes follow the Jewish calendar from Rosh Hashanah to Shavuot. Passover gets special attention, however.
"The symbolic nature of Passover and especially the seder meal makes it a perfect vehicle for teaching," Nathan says. "When the kids learn to separate eggs, they also learn why we use eggs instead of leavening. And when they learn to grate horseradish, they're learning about the bitterness of slavery."
Try these recipes from Nathan's book with your children and let us know what you think.

http://www.cliffordawright.com/history/jewish_cook.html
Did You Know? Some facts about Mediterranean food history What is Jewish Cooking? The role of sacrifice, especially in relation to food preparation, is of paramount importance to Jews. The slaughter of an animal for food was designated by a special verb, hullin. That life was being surrendered was central to the sacrificial ritual and signified by the letting of the animal's blood. "For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it for you upon the altar to make atonement, by reason of the life" (Lev. 17:11). Jews, therefore, were forbidden to eat blood, since life belonged only to God (Lev. 17:10; Gen 9:4; Lev. 3:17, 7:26; Deut. 12:16,23; 15:23). A sacrifice was an offering. The biblical teachings were important in the cooking of the Jews. tafina . Most Sephardi Jews use mutton instead of beef and rice instead of barley. Syrian Jews place the mixture inside a hollowed-out piece of pumpkin or squash. Sephardi and North African spices include whole hot red peppers, saffron or turmeric, and ground coriander seed. Chickpeas are often added to the mixture, and the North Africans frequently throw in a handful of cracked wheat (qamh). home about recipes books ... contact

Comments from people who have read this book Rating: 5/5 - adds enjoyment to the holidays
great book for the holidays added alot of fun and meaning to our celebrations. Rating: 5/5 - Jewish Holiday Style... I bought this book for myself, and five more copies for my friends and family. This passover I am planning on making three matzah-cover vases for my pesach table, and I'm also going to have a glass-square sedar plate. These stylish things are chic and inexpensive, plus they look great with any room or setting. The book itself has more knowledge than any other style book: usually books are either one or the other. Is Ms. Brownstein planning on writing any books in the future? Rating: 5/5 - Why to buy this book It will help you style up your house on any occasion like Shabbat to Passover. It is a wonderful guide on home decorating of every Jewish holiday.

Thursday September 18, 2003 Jewish cooking gets regional revamp for the Holy Days By linda morel
Jta Decades later, I dabbled with Indian, Greek, Japanese and Chinese cooking, cuisines I discovered in restaurants and magazines. But on Rosh Hashanah this glut of options left me spinning. Searching for culinary identity, I adopted the cuisine of my husband’s Italian Jewish family. His Israeli cousin shared her recipes, too. Like Jewish cooks throughout history, I was influenced by my environment. For thousands of years, Jews moved around the globe with their recipes, adapting to indigenous foods and local cuisine. But when Jewish stockpots met the great American melting pot, it sparked a culinary revolution. Nowhere in the world has Jewish cooking undergone the dramatic transformation that occurred in this country. Likewise, Jewish food has left its mark. Where would the average American be without his morning bagel? It seems that to be American means to savor dishes from every ethnic group. Cuisines such as Mexican and Mediterranean come and go with the seasons, and many Jews indulge in this feast of possibilities. Like Jewish eating habits, the Rosh Hashanah menu is in flux, swayed by cooking crazes.
