Kreplach is another triangular shaped good. It is ground meat or potatoes covered with dough. It is traditional to eat Kreplach on Yom Kippur, Hashana Rabba and Purim. Why? All 3 of these holidays are connected to beating and striking. On Yom Kippur, we strike ourselves. On Hoshana Rabba, we strike the arevot. On Purim, we strike Haman during the Megillah reading. * This recipe comes from Spice and Spirit, The Complete Kosher Jewish Cookbook (Lubavitch Women's Cookbook Publications, 1990). Ingredients Dough
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt

We have Shabbat, a holiday every single week. The holidays and the weekly Sabbath have meant a great deal to Jewish people throughout history. They are a means of binding families and community. And food plays a major part in each one, given the importance of the dietary laws and the table-centered rituals involved in Judaism. In addition to the weekly Sabbath, the three major seasonal harvest festivals include Passover, beginning the barley harvest in ancient times. Passover is the one holiday the overwhelming majority of American Jews celebrate. At Shavuot, a second harvest festival in the late spring, when there is an abundance of cheese and milk products, dairy dishes like cheesecakes and blintzes are served. And at Sukkot, celebrating the grain harvest at the commencement of autumn, all kinds of stuffed vegetables and stews are eaten. As signs of the plentiful harvest, meals are served in huts open to the sky, reminding us of the temporary shelters in the desert thousands of years ago.

One of my favorite meals is lunch after the first day of Rosh Hashanah . I invite a few close friends and family to a buffet after synagogue. After blessing the round challah for a full year, and dipping an apple in honey, we sit down to eat lunch, which I finish with
