"Swing Choir" in Nederland. It's  roots date back to the 1880's with African origins. Jazz combines elements of African music with elements of Western European music. The birthplace of that combination, which is Jazz, is said to be New Orleans. One theory as to why New Orleans is the birthplace is contributed to the black Creole subculture. The Creoles were originally from the West Indies and lived under the Spanish and French rule in Louisiana. They became free Americans under the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The Creoles spoke Spanish and French and lived in the high society of the French district in New Orleans. The Creoles took pride in their formal knowledge of the Western European music and their social and cultural values that classified them as upper class. Their music focused on sight-readings and correct performances for they played at the Opera House and chamber ensembles.

    Genres: Jazz
Jazz has been said to be the musical language that expreses the fundamental rhythms of human life. It is the first indigenous genre of music in the United States to affect music throughout the rest of the world. Jazz has many roots including the tribal drums so familiar to Afro-Americans, gospel, ragtime and blues, but clearly developed into a unique genre typified by spontaneous melodic phrasing.
    Louis Armstrong
Those who play jazz have often expressed the feelings that jazz should remain undefined, jazz should be felt. "If you gotta ask, you’ll never know" -Louis Armstrong. Many hold that jazz was born in New Orleans in the 1890's and subsequently travelled up the Mississippi River to Memphis, St. Louis and Chicago. As a southern port city, New Orleans was exposed city to the sounds of the Caribbean and Mexico and had a large, well-established black population. All the elements were present for the development of new music at the turn of the 20th century.
    Saxophonist
Along the way up the river and over time, jazz has enjoyed periods of fairly widespread popularity, with significant periods such as "jazz age" of the 1920's, the swing era of the late 1930's and modern jazz in the late 1950's. When the clubs in the Storyville area of New Orleans were closed, jazz musicians made their way north to Chicago. The city became the focal point for jazz in the early 1920's; a magnet for musicians including Earl Hines, Louis Armstrong and King Oliver.
