BYO rubber chicken and robot dinosaur: jazz music with Adam Simmons
Friday, 29 July 2005 Reporter: Jarrod Watt Pictures of the extraordinary sights one can behold at a Toyband gig. Adam Simmons Toyband Once upon a time jazz music was weird, scary music that offended classical musicians, authorities and old people. Now it's more likely to be background music at a dentist's surgery or mingling amongst the sounds of people shopping. In one crowded little venue in Ballarat, however, jazz music is once again an unpredictable, fun and exuberant medium. Choose your instrument: jack in the box or plastic sledgehammer Adam Simmons is one of Ballarat's most accomplished jazz musicians and composers, known throughout the Australian jazz community and also overseas, where he continues to win awards playing all sorts of instruments.

Acid Jazz
Title: Acid Trumpet
Length: 3 minutes 30 seconds. Cool EP, muted trumpet, and a layed back bass. Title: Modern Jazz Samba
Length: 4 minutes 8 seconds. While not technically Acid Jazz, this latin piece has definite modern jazz undertones. A nice little 85 BMP piece with guitar, piano, bass, and flute. Kind of jazzy and slightly blues-y. 2004

By learning the building blocks of music and music theory you will open up whole new For more information on Bruce Arnold s Books please check the Music
http://www.arnoldjazz.com/workshop/
T hese pages will be used as an educational site for instrumentalists interested in building their overall musicianship, technique and improving their understanding of improvisational concepts. The kind of learning presented here is essential. By learning the building blocks of music and music theory you will open up whole new worlds for your artistic fulfillment. For many of my students it sparks great ideas and helps them get closer to the music inside them. I t goes without saying that to become a great musician it is equally important to develop your creativityBut that does not mean waiting for the muse to pay a visit! Matisse said that creativity comes through work. Don't wait for inspiration before you practice, inspiration will come; just start practicing. To help you understand this process check out the books: "Matisse on Art" by Jack Fram, "Giacometti Portrait" by James Lord, "Letter to a Young Poet" by Rainer Maria Rilke, and "The Courage to Create" by Rollo May. These excellent books will help you understand the process of being a creative person. Always try to apply each of the exercises presented to a musical situation. For example, if you are learning a scale, memorize the notes and degrees but then apply it to a progression, or use it while you play along with your favorite CD. It is easy to lose yourself in theory and technique, so balance your practicing with being creative.

50. Piano Today: Piano Keyboard Music, Classical Jazz Music & Music Magazine
Classical, and jazz music magazine for pianists and teachers. Includes arrangements, theory, stylings, sheet music and articles.
http://www.pianotoday.com/
Autumn 2005
For pianists with an interest in Classical Music and Jazz, our publication is filled with intriguing things to play: great pieces from all eras and styles, jazz arrangements by today's top artists, inside stories, lessons and playing tips, and a whole section just for beginning level. It's a masterpiece of a magazine! By Ed Shanaphy His piano is the obvious workplace of a very committed and busy musician, weighed down as it is under music folios, scores, and sheet music, together with file folders of his original compositions. Opened on its music desk is Czerny's The Art of Finger Dexterity . "I think it's very important for a person, if they play jazz, to have some kind of classical background. For building up your chops, your technique, there's nothing that can substitute for classical music, as far as I know. I'm practicing more now than I ever have… those Czerny pieces are hard. If you can play those pieces up to speed, you can play anything ."

Artists work in many settings – anything from small groups to big bands to solo – and draw on myriad influences that reflect both the multi-cultural nature of British society and the many 'scenes' within the domestic jazz scene. In other words anything from Caribbean to Celtic rhythms may surface in the music alongside free improvisation, post-bop or funky, danceable grooves. Although British jazz doesn’t have a homogenous identity, it is greatly respected for its invention and quirkiness. At a symposium held in 2002 to discuss cross Channel jazz collaborations, Denis Lebas, programmer of the Coutances jazz festival, said that what he appreciated most about British jazz was its 'energetic, slightly crazy side'.
