Warner Bros.' and director Alan Crosland's The Jazz Singer (1927) is an historic milestone film and cinematic landmark. [Most people associate this film with the advent of sound pictures, although Don Juan (1926) , a John Barrymore silent film, also had a synchronized musical score performed by the New York Philharmonic and sound effects using Vitaphone 's system.] It should be made clear that this film was not the first sound film, nor the first 'talkie' film or the first movie musical. The wildly successful "photo-dramatic production" was based upon Samson Raphaelson's 1921 short story "The Day of Atonement" (also the basis for Raphaelson's popular 1926 Broadway play of the same name), and adapted for the screen by Alfred A. Cohn. In 1926, Warners' risky investment of a half million dollars with Western Electric in the Vitaphone sound system brought profits of $3.5 million at the box-office with this landmark talkie. It was a huge success, responsible for transforming Warners into Hollywood's hottest film factory. The commercialization of sound-on-film, and the transformation of the industry from silent films to talkies became a reality with the success of this film.

Marsh Barn, Burnham Deepdale The 7th annual Deepdale Jazz and Real Ale Festival in June 2005 was a success, despite the less than favourable weather. Over 700 people attended each day, but the weather kept away the last minute ticket buyers and those attending huddled more than usual. However despite the cold on Saturday and the downpour on Sunday the crowd danced at every opportunity and drank through the 25 real ales that the Fox Brewery supplied. Many people have asked what the plans are for 2006. We've now decided that 2006 will be a break year. Jason, one of the main organisers, now has a daughter and has decided time-out would be good, if for nothing else to catch up with the sleep he's lost since her arrival. Many of the helpers during the festival also need a year off after giving up a lot of time and energy to make the event successful. Plans for 2007 will be announced in due course.

... What's New? H ello, and welcome to the Trenier guitars homepage. My name is Bryant Trenier, and I am a maker of custom jazz guitars. After spending many years as a student of the guitar, I began building musical instruments in 1998, then studied stringed instrument making in the Czech Republic under Ondra Holoubek between 2002 and 2004. I have since returned to the states and set up a small shop in Seattle, Washington. I have always been fascinated not only by the great jazz players, but by the instruments they have played. For as long as I can remember, I've enjoyed the aesthetics of arched instruments, especially the arch top guitar. When I was finally able to play a few great ones (they are really few and far between), I fell in love also with their clear tonality and warm feel. It was at this time that I began to realize that you really can see the luthier's hand in every great instrument, a realization that guided me not only in my study of music, but also in the making of my instruments. My instruments can occasionally be found at Voltage Guitars in Hollywood, California
