NOTE: For all those wishing to reach me, unfortunately my e-mail is down at the moment, however that will be corrected in early July as well as some updates to the website and correction of broken links.
Here at Nic's JavaScript Page, we do things a little differently than the competition. Unlike other other JavaScript pages that try to junk their examples full of useless code, we prefer to make our codes as small as possible. This makes the code easier to manipulate and learn from. We have had many e-mails from people who taught themselves JavaScript just by looking at our examples. Also unlike the competition, we only like to have one or two of a certain type of script. This helps the viewer find the code he wants faster. Come in and look at all the unique examples we have to offer here, categorized by subject. To get an e-mail once new scripts come out, join our newsletter . If you still want more, look at some of the other pages created by NicNet (bottom left).

103. Introduction
This book describes the JavaScript language and its use in Navigator. For information on developing serverbased JavaScript applications, see the LiveWire
http://home.netscape.com/eng/mozilla/3.0/handbook/javascript/intro.htm
Note: This manual is out of date. It is the JavaScript Guide for JavaScript 1.1; that is, JavaScript as used by Navigator 3. x . The current manuals are the new JavaScript Guide and JavaScript Reference . As well as having information for JavaScript 1.1, these manuals have been updated to include new information for JavaScript 1.2. In addition, the JavaScript Reference includes information on server-side JavaScript objects as well as core and client-side objects. Please update your links.
Introduction
LiveWire Developer's Guide.
What's new in Navigator 3.0
JavaScript for Navigator 3.0 has a rich set of new features. Appendix F, "Features added after version 1," lists the new objects, properties, arrays, methods, functions, event handlers, operators, and other features.
What you should already know
This book assumes you have some basic background, including
  • A general understanding of the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW).
  • Good working knowledge of HyperText Markup Language (HTML).
Some programming experience with a language such as C or Visual Basic is useful, but not required.
How to use this book
This book is divided into three parts:
  • Part 1, "Using JavaScript in Navigator," introduces JavaScript and describes its use in Navigator. It covers the main features of client JavaScript and touches on some advanced topics.

Turing machines implemented in JavaScript
Here you can see the basic ideas of Turing machines illustrated by some very simple examples. Continue to the Scrapbook page on Alan Turing and his Turing machines for more general information on the machine concept.

Machine 1: unary addition Machine 2: divisibility Machine 3: primality The tape will appear here. The scanned square, marked off with , remains fixed while the tape passes through it.

What to do:
First choose your machine by CLICKing on the selection.
Then click on LOAD.
Now you can choose STEP to make the machine take one step at a time, or RUN to let the machine run until it terminates the calculation.
You can interrupt a RUN with BREAK. To resume, click on CONTINUE and then either STEP or RUN. Reset by using LOAD.
The machines:
Machine 1 is there to illustrate the basic operations. Step through the moves to see how it 'adds' two groups of 1's into a single group.
