Session 90: Crones, Courtesans, and Vampires: Male Representations of "Woman" in Japanese Theatre
Organizer and Chair: Patricia Pringle , Oglethorpe University Discussant: J. Thomas Rimer , University of Pittsburgh Classical Japanese theatre has been staged and performed exclusively by men for centuries, yet it has created a number of powerful female roles. These roles are accepted by audiences, both male and female, as representations of "woman." This panel examines various male appropriations of the feminine voice in Japanese theatre, both classical and modern. Four presenters will examine four different genres: (1) Noh plays about crones, written by male authors in the Muromachi period, and performed exclusively by males; (2) Portrayal of courtesans in Bunraku puppet plays on love suicide themes which were popular in the Edo period, and also performed exclusively by males; (3) Female roles in Kabuki plays, performed by special male actors called "onnagata"; and (4) Portrayal of mothers in the plays of Terayama Shuji, Japanese avant-garde playwright of the 1960s and 1970s. These papers analyze the disjunction between the fictional voices and bodies of "woman" presented on stage and women’s actual cultural circumstances. They also consider why these fictional male creations were accepted by the audience as representations of women. What relationship exists between male-created stage presentation of "woman" and women’s self-perceptions? Is there any special theatrical consensus between the artists and the audience about the portrayal of "woman" on stage? This panel seeks these answers across four different Japanese theatre genres: Noh, Kabuki, Bunraku, and the 20th-century avant-garde.

The festival will also showcase music, film, fine arts and literature. Kabuki theatre, which combines songs and dance, originates in the 17th century and has had a major impact on the Japanese art.
It combines classical forms of Japanese theatre, like Noh, Kyogen and puppet theatre Bunraku, with a view of achieving an aesthetic ideal rather than realism.
The world of kabuki, in which even the female roles are played by men, will be presented by Kyozo Nakamura and Masanosuke Gojo. The presentation of specific kabuki costumes and make-up will be followed by dance productions.
The festival will also feature a wide range of concerts, from traditional to jazz and electronic music. One of the highlights will be guitarist Otomo Joshihide, the leader of a jazz ensemble. Joshihide, 45, has produced or co-produced around 100 projects.

As Ruxandra Marginean notes in this collection, "Japanese theatre exists 'in the world' not only in and of itself, but also through its scholarly interpretations" (p. 133). Indeed, Japanese Theatre and the International Stage is a fine demonstration of the current state of scholarship in this field and a worthy [End Page 240] addition to a number of other recent volumes about Japanese theatre seen from a world or comparative perspective. This book contains twenty-five papers out of forty that were presented in May 1998 at a symposium at Munich's Museum Villa Stuck. The symposium was held in conjunction with a major exhibition of Japanese theatre that was shown first in New York at the Japan Society in the fall and winter of 1997 and then moved to Munich the following spring. That exhibition spawned the gorgeous catalog, Japanese Theater in the World

Excerpt
In the conclusion to The Man who Saved Kabuki: Faubion Bowers and Theatre Censorship in Occupied Japan , Shiro Okamoto writes "All arts have an unhappy relationship with politics. Literature has been the most prosecuted of all" (115). Okamoto's book uses this idea to explore the intersection of a Japanese classical art form, kabuki , with the American politics of the Occupation of Japan after the Second World War. Specifically, Okamoto looks at how Faubion Bowers, a scholar, critic and General MacArthur's aide de camp , was able to impose his love of kabuki upon the American censors and save kabuki from obsolescence and financial ruin. Okamoto's book creates dual historical portraits within the text. One is of a young American officer trying to adhere to his love of both Japanese culture and American orders and the other is of

K abuki is a traditional form of Japanese theater. It was founded early in the 17th century by Okuni , a shrine maiden who brought her unique and lively dance style to the dry river beds of the ancient capital of Kyoto, and over the next 300 years developed into a sophisticated, highly stylized form of theater.
Though Kabuki was created by a woman, since early on all roles have been taken by men. Men who play the roles of women are referred to as "onnagata" female role specialists. Ichimura Manjiro , an actor who actively participates in this page, is an "onnagata".
Kabuki plays and dances may be about grand historical events or the everyday life of people in the Edo period (1600-1868). For each play, though, the sets, music, costumes and other factors combine to create the fantastic world of Kabuki. We hope you enjoy exploring this page.

Kabuki is a traditional Japanese form of theater with its origins in the Edo period . Kabuki, in contrast to the older surviving Japanese art forms such as No , was the popular culture of the townspeople and not of the higher social classes. Kabuki plays are about historical events, moral conflicts in love relationships and the like. The actors use an old fashioned language which is difficult to understand even for some Japanese people. They speak in a monotonous voice and are accompanied by traditional Japanese instruments The kabuki stage (kabuki no butai) is a rotating stage and is further equipped with several gadgets like trapdoors through which the actors can appear and disappear. Another speciality of the kabuki stage is a footbridge (hanamichi) that leads through the audience. In the early years, both, men and women acted in Kabuki plays. Later during the Edo period, the

Created by a Woman...
It is strangely ironic that Japanese Kabuki, an exclusively male preserve, a theater where women have been in the audience but not on stage for almost four hundred years, was created in large part by a woman and her female troupe. Okuni, who may have come from the shrine of Izumo and thus have had a background in shamanistic ritual and No, set up a temporary stage on the dry bed of the Kamo River in Kyoto around 1603, where she and her company performed slightly suggestive dances and skits.

The Origins of Japanese Noh Theater
The history of the whole of Japanese theater might have been entirely different if, in 1375 at Kasuge Temple near Nara, two adolescent boys had not formed a passionate friendship, a special relationship that would cause a unique and ultimately influential art form to come into being. The elder of the young men was Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, aged 17, the powerful dynastic shogun and ruler of all Japan, and he had experienced an early form of Noh performed by Kanami Kiyotsugu and his twelve year old son Zeami Motokiyo. It is due to Yoshimitsu's patronage and interest in early Noh that this dramatic form was able to develop into the highly refined, serene theater which we can see today.
