In myth, the dragon is often depicted with a pearl or ball, which symbolizes thunder. Excerpt from "Myths and Legends of Japan" by F. Hadland Davis The Dragon is undoubtedly the most famous of mythical beasts, but, though Chinese in origin, it has become intimately associated with Japanese mythology. The creature lives for the most part in the ocean, river, or lake, but it has the power of flight and rules over clouds and tempests. The Dragon of China and Japan resemble each other, with the exception that the Japanese Dragon has three claws, while that of the Celestial Kingdom (China) has five. The Chinese Emperor Yao was said to be the son of a dragon, and many rulers of that country were metaphorically referred to as "dragon-faced." The Dragon has the head of a camel, horns or a deer, eyes of a hare, scales of a carp, paws of a tiger, and claws resembling those of an eagle. In addition it has whiskers, a bright jewel under its chin, and a measure on the top of its head which enables it to ascend to Heaven at will. This is merely a general description and does not apply to all dragons, some of which have heads of so extraordinary a kind that they cannot be compared with anything in the animal kingdom. The breath of the Dragon changes into clouds from which come either rain or fire. It is able to expand or contract its body, and in addition it has the power of transformation and invisibility.

On this page: Wikipedia Mentioned In Or search: - The Web - Images - News - Blogs - Shopping Japanese mythology Wikipedia Japanese mythology Japanese mythology is an extremely complex religion and system of beliefs. The Shinto pantheon alone boasts a collection of more than 8000 kami (Japanese for " gods " or " spirits "). Despite the influence of the ancient Chinese civilization , much of Japanese mythology is uniquely their own. It embraces Shinto and Buddhist traditions as well as agricultural-based folk beliefs . Moreover, unlike Greek Nordic and Egyptian mythology , it is very difficult to distinguish what is truly " myth " to the Japanese. This article will only discuss the typical elements present in western mythology such as cosmogony , important deities and the most well-known Japanese stories. Mainstream Japanese myths, as generally recognized today, are based on the Kojiki Nihonshoki and some complementary books. The Kojiki or "Record of Ancient Things" is the oldest recognized book of myths, legends, and history of Japan. The Shintoshu explains origins of Japanese deities from a Buddhist perspective while the Hotsuma Tsutae records a substantially different version of mythology.

Japanese Mythology
Japanese Mythology is largely derived from the state religion of Shinto. While Buddhism has overtaken much of Japan, many people still practice Shinto, mostly for tradition rather than actual belief in the surrounding mythology.

37. Izangi And Izanami - Japanese Mythology - Ancinet-Mythology.com
The story of Izangi and Izanami, parents of Japan.
http://www.ancient-mythology.com/japanese/izangi-izanami.php
Izangi (meaning "He who invites"), together with Izanami ("She who invites"), are of the seventh generation of Shinto 's celestial gods. Together, they were the creators of the Japanese islands (Yamato). Izanagi and Izanami were given a special spear by the older generations, with which Izangi reached down and created the first island, Onogoro. Izangi and Izanami decided to marry and to mate to bring about new generations and new lands from the Earth. To marry, they created a ritual to celebrate. During the ceremony, Izanami cried out delightfully upon seeing Izangi. Izangi returned the excitement, but reminded Izanami that a female should not speak first in this manner. The first result of their lovemaking was a deformed child that was shaped like a leech (this child is sometimes associated with the god Hiruko). Izangi and Izami returned to Heaven in order to determine the cause of this deformity. They learned that Izanami's outburst during their wedding polluted their marriage. So, the couple then repeated the ceremony, only Izanami remained silent until spoken to. Their next attempt at mating created the eight largest islands of Japan, and consequent bubbles in the ocean gave rise to the smaller islands and other foreign lands. Izangi and Izanami later created dieties of the sea, wind, mountains, rivers, trees and of rice.
