Japanese Mythology
Daruma Netsuke The Japanese culture and arts have been strongly influenced by a wide-spread belief in ghosts, demons and supernatural spirits. The roots of Japanese mythology are in the Shinto religion, in Taoism and in Zen Buddhism alike.
Daruma
Daruma is the founder of Zen Buddhism in Japan (552 AD). Originally an Indian priest named Bodhidharma, he crossed all over China to introduce Buddhism in Japan. The legend says that he crossed the sea from China to Japan standing on a bamboo. Daruma is mostly shown in a position of meditation. He is said to have lost the use of his arms and legs by meditating for nine years in a cave. Therefore he is often shown as Daruma doll without legs and arms. Part 1
Ancient days, Japan was called "Wa" or "Wakoku".
First God appeares, called " Ameno-minakanushi " who is considered the North Star nowadays.
Second God appeares, called " Takami-musubi "
Soon Goddess appears, called " Kami-musubi "
These three dessapeared sooner.
Then fourth God called " Umasi-ashikabi-hikoji "appers.
And then, fifth God called " Ameno-tokotachi "appears.
Next, sixth God " Kunino-tokotachi "appears.
And next, seventh God " Toyokuninushi " appears. But these four Gods dessapeared sooner.. Now we Japanese can't know ,what is these Gods. I (fuushi) think about "Toyokuninushi" who really existed as the first God in our country. Sooner or later, couple Gods came one after another. As,God" Uhijini "& Goddess" Suijini "," Tunokui" "Ikugui "," Ootonoji" "Ootonobe ", and " Omodaru" "Aya-kashikone ". At last, " Izanagi " & "

Japanese Gods and Goddesses
God Izanagi and Goddess Izanami by Ogata Gekko, 1896 This article is the continuation of Japanese Mythology and introduces a few more of the Japanese gods and goddesses like the sennin Tobosaku and other strange beings like the Shishi dog.
God Izanagi and Goddess Izanami
God Izanagi and Goddess Izanami were married to each other. Izanami could give birth to anything. One day she created the island of Japan. Izanami died when she gave birth to the god of fire from deadly burns during labor. By then she had given birth to 14 islands and 35 gods. God Izanagi was desperate about the loss of his beloved companion and went down to the underworld to search for Izanami. He also found her. Izanami told Izanagi to wait for her. But he should not turn his head and try to look at her until she would be back.

Japanese mythology is an extremely complex system of beliefs. The Shinto pantheon alone boasts a collection of more than 8000 kami Japanese for " gods " or " spirits "). Despite the influence of the ancient Chinese civilization , much of Japanese mythology and religion is uniquely their own. It embraces Shinto and Buddhist traditions as well as agricultural-based folk beliefs . Moreover, unlike Greek Nordic and Egyptian mythology , it is relatively difficult to distinguish what is truly "myth" to the Japanese. This article will discuss only the typical elements present in Occidental mythology such as cosmogony , important deities and the most well-known Japanese stories. Mainstream Japanese myths, as generally recognized today, are based on the Kojiki Nihonshoki and some complementary books. The Kojiki or "Record of Ancient Things" is the oldest recognized book of myths, legends, and history of Japan. The Shintoshu explains origins of Japanese deities from a Buddhist perspective while the Hotsuma Tsutae records a substantially different version of mythology.
