In the spring of 2003, the Board of Trustees at the College Board adopted a resolution that called on the AP Program to actively explore the development and implementation of new AP language and culture courses and examinations in Italian, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian, "as a first step in a commitment by the College Board to furthering multiculturalism and multilingualism in secondary education."
"Through the new world language programs, the College Board hopes to make a significant contribution to secondary school curricula," College Board President Gaston Caperton said. "World events make it ever more obvious that a broad knowledge and understanding of other languages and cultures is essential for our young people."

Their work will continue throughout the 2004-2005 academic year. In August 2005, an AP Japanese Development Committee will be formed to refine the course outline, finalize the exam specifications, write the AP Japanese Course Description, begin writing exam questions, and assemble the first forms of the exam. This committee will work together throughout the 2005-2006 academic year. The first AP Japanese Language and Culture courses will then be offered worldwide in the fall of 2006, followed by the first administration of the exam in May 2007.

Building a Japanese Language Program from the Bottom Up Linda Worman
September 1998 The past fifteen years have seen the establishment of a variety of less-commonly taught "critical language" programs to teach those languages the U.S. government perceives to be of strategic national importance or that students deem as necessary for career development in a global economy. Specifically, Japanese language study experienced a remarkable 94.9 percent growth between 1985 and 1990. The success of new programs depends on a number of specific factors which ultimately determine survival or extinction. Building student interest and a learning foundation at the elementary/middle school level can be a key element to establishing and maintaining a successful language program.

As many readers of this page will know, I have an on-going interest in Japan, its people and language. This has led to a number of activities bringing together Japanese and my professional activities in computing and telecommunications. I have assembled this set of pages: (a) to provide information about a number of my projects in the area of Japanese computing and dictionaries, (b) to provide links to some of the resources available on the WWW on Japanese matters. These pages were mentioned in an article in the Asahi Evening News, by Andrew Horvat, whose pages have a link below. William Gordon has written an extended essay on these pages and the WWWJDIC dictionary server. David Jolly mentioned WWWJDIC in an article in the International Herald Tribune (backup copy as the original has expired).

    Background to the Program
Since the end of World War II, about 73,000 Japanese people have emigrated to other countries with help from JICA and other organizations, and there are now thought to be around 2.5 million ethnic Japanese living overseas.
Japanese emigrants and their descendants worldwide have overcome many difficulties to form mature communities in their adopted countries. During the immediate postwar years, many Japanese emigrated to Brazil and other parts of Latin America, where they are now playing key roles in industrial and economic development, particularly in the field of agriculture.
