Author's notes (2000/08/01):
  • After more feedback, here are some other explanations for the use of "ko" in Japanese women's first names: Many princesses and upperclass women had "ko" in their names. Later when the lines became blurred between some classes, the "ko" naming artifact became popular with more people. Not as much thought was put into women's names, because only the first born son carried on the family wealth. For women's names it was easiest to default to a random beauty related term + "ko". Many people have told me "it doesn't have any particular meaning". But if I believed that I wouldn't have anything to write about. :)

  • Manifestations of Gender Distinction in the Japanese Language
    Introduction
Present day Japanese has evolved very differently from European languages. One relatively unique aspect of Japanese is the diversity of its gender specific constructs and their usage. In the current state of Japanese and its many dialects, speaker gender plays an important role in word choice, sentence structure, tone of voice and more generally the ways in which a person can present him/herself with the language. The importance of roles in Japanese society makes the speaker obligated to conform to language stereotypes whereas in English, the language of self-proclaimed individualists, social forces have been pushing to neutralize the inherent biases of the language. Even though there are ancient stereotypes still embodied in the Japanese language and culture, we are beginning to see these break down as well.

Home For Prospective Students Japanese-language Schools Why Study in Japan? Selecting a School Student Categories Immigration Procedures ... Japanese-language Schools Necessary Items Personal Accounts When a student goes abroad to study, the student normally gains admission to a college or university before departing his or her country. Ideally, you should also leave for Japan after gaining admission to an institute of higher education. With this view, Japan promotes a system of "Pre-arrival Admission" and holds the "Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)." This examination, held since FY2002, allows prospective students to apply for admission to a Japanese institute of higher education, go through the selection process and secure admission without having to travel to Japan. You can find details regarding the "Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)" at the following webpage:
    http://www.studyjapan.go.jp/en/toj/toj0303e.html
With this said, however, the general case of studying in Japan begins with a student first enrolling in a Japanese-language institute. The student takes an entrance exam and enrolls in a university or other institute of higher education after they study Japanese and other subjects at a Japanese language institute for one to two years. For this reason, the choice of a Japanese-language institute becomes extremely important for a prospective student. There are two types of Japanese language institutes for international students who wish to go on to a Japanese university for undergraduate or postgraduate studies.

This is Shareware I originally created in 1991 for helping me with learning Japanese. It is MS-DOS software but, amazingly, it still works on Microsoft Windows (all versions as of 2001). Some people may still find it useful. It is basically a flash-card type program in which you can learn hiragana, katakana, a few basic kanji and some vocabulary. If you try it out, please drop me a line just to say hi. By the way, ignore the address in the documentation as it is no longer valid. However, if you really want to send me money, let me know and something can be arranged. :-) Download via HTML ksensei1.zip Kana Sensei Program ks_ou.zip Additional quizzes originally sent only to registered users Download via FTP ksensei1.zip Kana Sensei Program ks_ou.zip Additional quizzes originally sent only to registered users Directions for installation:
