81. Sinosplice | Language
John s lesson plans Every foreign teacher in China has been there class tomorrow When I realized in Japan that languages and linguistics were for me,
http://www.sinosplice.com/lang/
John has lived in China for 5 years. He is a grad student in applied linguistics.
Sinosplice Presents:
Language Resources
Language is my passion. I'm in China now to master Mandarin Chinese. I have been achieving this goal by teaching English, which I also happen to really like. My interest in languages also extends to: English , my native language, Spanish , which I studied throughout high school and also in Mexico during college, Japanese , which I started studying on a whim in my freshman year in college, but ended up majoring in. I studied for a year in Osaka, Japan, while living in Kyoto. I absolutely loved it. When I realized in Japan that languages and linguistics were for me, I also decided to begin studying Chinese . I had to take the courses for my major and two minors for my remaining two years at UF, but I was still able to squeeze in three semesters of Mandarin Chinese. Early in my junior year, I was already planning on coming to China after graduation from UF. Now that I'm here, I spend a lot of my free time studying Chinese and practicing my speaking with my Chinese friends. I don't have any trouble with normal conversation anymore, but I still strive to build on my vocabulary, and my reading and writing needs further work as well. I started Shanghai Normal University's graduate program in Applied Linguistics in Fall 2005.
Sinosplice Presents:
Chinese Language Resources
My study of Chinese has come a long way since its humble beginnings at UF. Here I'll try to offer some advice to those headed down the same path. The good news is it's getting more and more painless (although pain will always be an element of the study of Chinese!).

Title - Baleros in the Classroom
By - William Tulinsky
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Secondary Subjects - Social Studies, Health / Physical Education, Multi-Discipline
Grade Level - K - 12
Rational: Baleros are an excellent interest stimulator for students. The Spanish language becomes a more interesting and acceptable subject for students when practiced with Balero. Numbers, words, phrase and sentence structures all become easier to remember because the Balero is something real, physical and interesting that students can associate with the language. Objective / Lesson Overview / Goals Teaching language and culture while having fun. Students learn Spanish while playing with baleros. Achieve better retention of Spanish and better student / teacher relations. Teach balero skills along with course material. Time Needed: Baleros can be an activity before class begins and right before it ends. Also lunch period, break periods, a portion of study period, after school or any appropriate time given your schools scheduling can be utilized. Use some class time, 5 to 15 min. 3 to 5 times a week for instruction, competition and challenges where the teacher can supervise.

Sample Lesson Plan No.3-6d
Teacher's Name: Junko Agena
Date: April 27, 2000
School: Aina Haina Elementary (HI)
Email Address: Junko871@aol.com
Category: 3-6 Lesson Plan Information Grade: 4-6 (Japanese Language Class)
Length: 2-3 weeks
SF Focus: All sites, K-6 curriculum guide
Background: Students attend language classes for ~70 minutes each week. Goals Building teamwork and investigation skills Specific Activities BEGINNING A JOURNEY Learning about a passport is a great idea. The students will enjoy filling out the application and receiving their "passport." It is very important to closely monitor the students' learning; therefore, I felt that giving a stamp for each site was also appropriate. However, some students (especially 3rd and 4th grade students) may get confused between the real purpose of a passport and the purpose of their "passport." The following suggestions can help:
  • Do the first two paragraphs of the passport lesson (in the curriculum). Discuss the purpose of having a passport, such as who needs to have it, when to use it, where to use it and why. After the students are clear on the purpose of a passport, go on to the third paragraph of the lesson.
  • Do the first two paragraphs of the passport lesson (in the curriculum). Discuss the purpose of having a passport, such as who needs to have it, when to use it, where to use it and why. This will be the end of the passport lesson. The passport can be placed in each student's workbook folder/binder or the Journey Notebook later on. However, since I still think a stamp for each site is a great way to monitor the students' progress, I would use the idea, and would stamp on each student's Workbook.
