Advised by Yoshihiko Ariizumi , assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures, she uses anime to produce dramatic learning improvement EASTON, Pa.( www.lafayette.edu ), May 24, 2005 — The success of a project using animation to teach the Japanese language earned (Holmdel, N.J.) the opportunity to present her work at the 19th Annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research Schubel, an English major who hopes to add a major in East Asian studies, worked all year under the guidance of Yoshihiko Ariizumi , assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures. Schubel chose a three- to five-minute clip of anime, a style of Japanese animation, and showed it to beginning and intermediate Japanese classes with subtitles. Schubel and Ariizumi then reviewed with the class vocabulary and grammatical elements from the clip. After the review, the same clip was shown without subtitles and the students were asked to discuss how much they understood. The anime exposes students to natural conversation and highlights more elements than just vocabulary and grammar. Even more interesting, adds Ariizumi, is that the beginning group, with only two semesters of Japanese, attained greater abilities than the intermediate one.

    Teaching in Japan Page Questionnaire
    1. Please describe the type of person that your company is looking for when recruiting new EFL teachers.
We are looking for dynamic, outgoing, energetic, responsible individuals with a university degree. Teaching experience can be an asset, but isn't a requirement.
    2. What is the current salary range for new teachers in your company? Be specific.
All instructors start at 250,000 yen per month as their base salary. We do have an extra payment system whereby all instructors can be recognized for their efforts in providing quality care for students. This can range from 10,000 yen to 40,000 yen per month (or more). On top of that we have a promotion system where teachers are eligible for promotions every six months (which means increases to their monthly salary). As you may know that out of this they must pay their own apartment rent and utilities, however, we find and furnish the apartment and pay any key money that may be required. We do also provide any transportation fee necessary.
