NIHON BUNKA/ JAPANESE CULTURE
One Hundred Years in the Pajaro Valley
Chapter 1:
Tradition Dictates Tomorrow: The Pioneers
Written by Kathy McKenzie Nichols and Jane W. Borg N Those laborers were the start of the Japanese community in the Pajaro Valley, which would go on to influence every aspect of life here, even as its people fought discrimination and adversity to settle in this land. As these monumental projects were finished, the Chinese turned to agricultural work - again providing a vast labor force needed to support expanding California markets. Upon the 50th anniversary of the Watsonville Japanese American Citizens League in 1984, historian Sandy Lydon wrote: "After Japan relaxed laws prohibiting emigration in 1885, Japanese farm laborers began to replace the aging Chinese in the fields of Hawaii, California, Oregon and Washington. The number of Japanese living in the Pajaro Valley grew from a handful in 1890 to over four hundred in 1900, and the young, energetic men soon filled the slots being vacated by Chinese in agriculture as well as finding employment as domestics, laundrymen, woodchoppers and railroad workers in the Monterey Bay region."

Village funeral
05:54 JST Japanese Culture 3 days ago, we got a call informing us that the grandfather of the household two houses away had passed away. We knew him fairly well. We live in a small Japanese village with very strong traditional rural rituals. One of them is the funeral. Many of the adjacent homes have a special relationship called musubiai or kumiai , which means that they will do just about anything for their next door neighbor. In the case of a death in the family, it means 24/7 support through all of the necessary activities. For the rest of the village, it means nearly full support. The home of the deceased is quickly turned into a base camp of sorts with two outdoor kitchens and dozens of people cooking almost around the clock for everyone. The next day, the wake was set up, villagers (including Mizuka and me) visited to pay respects and the close neighbors ran most of operations.

    Male Homosexuality
    and Popular Culture
    in Modern Japan
    Mark McLelland

    Introduction
  • There has recently been much discussion in the field of lesbian and gay studies about Dennis Altman's theory of 'global queering' which outlines the influence of the Civil Rights' Movement in the US and Europe on the development of lesbian and gay 'identities' which then, through the 'globalising' influence of post-industrial wage-based economies, consumerism, the mass media and tourism, in turn begin to affect indigenous understandings of homosexuality in societies where traditionally there has been no notion of a personal identity founded on the gender of sexual object choice. In this theory, the US is often assumed to be somehow in advance of the rest of the world and the models pioneered in that country for increasing the social space accorded to lesbian and gay lives are generalised as suitable models for lesbians and gay men in other countries to adopt.
  • Japan, as the world's only fully 'modernised' non-western culture, is an important testing ground for Altman's theory. To what extent have indigenous Japanese understandings of same-sex desire, fashioned in a religious and political climate quite different from that in western countries, been influenced by western models of lesbian and gay identity? Until recently, it was impossible to answer this question for, even five years ago, there was practically no information available in English about homosexuality in modern Japan and there was only one book and a handful of academic papers concerning Japan's well-attested historical tradition of male homosexuality.
