6 Lessons From Japanese Business Culture
By Roberto Rocha
Success Correspondent - Every 2nd Saturday
Many a businessman transplanted to the Land of the Rising Sun has come back with tales of culture shock and bewilderment. To us in the West, Japanese culture remains a mystery wrapped in an enigma. But beneath its perplexing surface lies an extremely productive and effective society, as evidenced by their economic muscle. Nonetheless, the Japanese are rigidly ceremonious when it comes to making deals. To the foreigner, or gaijin , as the locals call them, Japanese business customs seem so deeply entrenched in their foreign culture and traditions that they couldn't possibly work for us in the West. But look past the rituals themselves and you'll see concepts that are well worth emulating, such as respect for elders, attention to detail and an almost religious commitment to having fun after work. Here's a breakdown of lessons we can learn from our brethren in the Far East.

Japanese culture and language
Japan's isolation until the arrival of the " Black Ships " and the Meiji era produced a culture distinctively different from any other, and echoes of this uniqueness persist today. For example, as Ruth Benedict pointed out in her classic study "The Chrysanthemum and the Sword", Japan has a shame culture (external reference standard) rather than the guilt culture (internal reference standard) that is more familiar in the West. Again in Japan, inter-relationships between people are heavily influenced by "obligation" and "duty" in a way that is no longer true in the more individualistic and free-wheeling West. Finally, generalised conceptions of morality and desirable behaviour are relatively under-developed in Japan, where particular obligations to family, school, and friends tend to guide behaviour. Because of strong correlation between Japanese culture and language, the

BUSHIDO ( SAMURAI SPIRIT = Chivalry ) is a flower no less indigenous to soil of Japan than its emblem, the cherry blossom. The conditions of society which brought it forth and nourished it have long disappeared; but as those far-off stars which once were and are not, still continue to shed their rays upon us, so the light of BUSHIDO which was a child of feudalism, still illuminates our moral path, surviving its mother institution.
KABUKI
Kabuki originated in the early Edo period, when a woman called Okuni of Izumo performed a Buddhist dance in an unusual costume in Kyoto. the dance was later deemed morally unacceptable, and woman were prohibited from performing it. Instead, only adult men were allowed to perform. This custom has been maintained in present-day kabuki.
Noh (No) originated in the art of dengaku(ritual field music and dance) and sarugaku (mimic plays) in the kamakura era; which developed as music-plays incorporating beautiful music and dance in the Muromachi era. Kyogen, on the other hand, is comedic drama. UKIYO-E
A genre painting popular among the common people during the Edo period (1600-1868). Ukiyu means "pleasure-seeking," or "sensual" in Japanese, and this world was actually the subject of paintings called Ukiyo-e.Most Ukiyo-e were prints that could be mass-produced. Drawings were rare.

Bioethics and Japanese Culture
: Brain Death, Patients' Rights, and Cultural Factors Masahiro Morioka Eubios Journal of Asian and International Bioethics This paper illustrates how modern medical technology and clash in the midst of an industrialized, high-tech society, such as Japan. Brain death and organ transplants debates in Japan are examined from the view point of comparative culture *The sign shows the page numbers of [Previous page / Next page] in the original journal/book. 1. Brain death and Japanese society The word "bioethics" appeared in the United States in the early 1970s, and spread to other advanced countries in the 1980s. Japan was no exception. Through powerful patients' rights movements and fierce debates on brain death in the 1980s, Japanese society has realized the importance of bioethical ideas and bioethical ways of thinking. Today, "informed consent" is a key concept among human rights activists in the field of medical care. At the same time, however, Japanese society seems to have showed reluctance to, for example, organ transplants from brain-dead donors.
In this paper, I will illustrate how the Japanese have responded to newly imported bioethical ideas by examining their discourse on brain death and patients' rights. Through the analysis the reader will encounter a typical Asian response to modern "Western" medicine and culture.

91. The Japanese Garden: Avoiding Cultural Preconceptions
in japanese culture, a culture steeped in tradional styles and literature. meaning of japanese culture and to fully appreciate the garden itself.
http://www.csuohio.edu/history/shiga96/pages/gcdg.html
Avoiding Cultural Preconceptions
During my stay in Japan, I have had the pleasure of visiting several Japanese-style gardens; one of the first was Genkyu-en , a stroll garden built in the 1670s under the direction of Ii Nao-oki, the fourth daimyo (feudal lord) of Hikone Castle. Upon first viewing this type of garden, Americans will notice a stark contrast to what we in the West think of as a "garden". Yet, Japanese gardens are just as aesthetically pleasing, even without the complex organizing styles we in the West think necessary. Japanese-style gardens lack the bright colors that might be expected in Western-style gardens. Instead they are predominately earthy in color, stressing greens, stone greys and other colors associated with earth's most basic elements. The simplicity and attention given to even the smallest of details makes Japanese gardens a wonder to view. Within the seeming simplicty of their design one also comes to recognize complex allusions to deeper meanings rooted in Japanese culture, a culture steeped in tradional styles and literature.
Anyone wishing to experience a Japanese-style garden, therefore, must enter with no (Western) preconceptions if attempting to absorb the deeper meaning of Japanese culture and to fully appreciate the garden itself.

Bill Taylor Oakton Community College 1600 E. Golf Rd. Des Plaines, IL 60016 btaylor@acs.oakton.edu Before I describe the attached project, let me place it in context.
I use The Pacific Century telecourse in a variety of ways: as a telecourse, as part of a regular in_class course, and as the basis of a staff development seminar for Oakton's faculty. The textbook I use to accompany the videotapes is Frank Gibney's, The Pacific Century. In preparing the course, I felt that Gibney's book presupposed background knowledge that the students don't have, so I wrote a Companion Volume to go along with the text. In this volume I try to provide the background knowledge the students will need to understand the text and the video lessons. I also try to enrich the material in a variety of ways, for example, by making connections between materials embedded in the course, by indicating the historical significance of the events being studied, and by adding materials that aren't covered, especially in the area of politics and current developments.
This Companion Volume (it is about 325 pages long) was the ultimate product of my participation in two previous programs offered by the East_West Center and the University of Hawaii. In the summer of 1993 I participated in their three_week Institute on Infusing Asian Studies into the Curriculum, and in the summer of 1994 I was a member of their Fulbright_Hays study tour to China.

Martial Arts and Japanese Culture
By Jigme Daniels Special to The Epoch Times Aug 09, 2005
TRUE AIM: An archer dressed in traditional samurai garb displays Yabusame (archery while on horseback) during an annual demonstration of 13th century Japanese martial arts in Tokyo. (Yoshikazu Tsuno/AFP/Getty Images) High-resolution image (1382 x 2048 px, 1 dpi) Japanese martial arts, particularly those descended from classical-era ones, are a distinctive combination of art and science. Borne of hundreds of years of internecine warfare, there were (at conservative estimates) over 1000 different systems of combative technique, each with their own peculiarities. What survives of these are fascinating artifacts of the time and place of their development that offer modern students a unique opportunity to practice an ancient form. According to a myth, the islands of Japan were formed by the two deities Izanagi and Izanami. They dipped their spear into the ocean, churned it, and created the first island, Onogoro, from the drops of salty water which fell from the spear. In those early myths, gods are described as partaking in ritual combat (wrestling, probably a very ancient forerunner to modern Sumo) and using weapons as tools for creation as well as destruction.
