Early iron in China, Korea, and Japan
Points for discussion at the Roundtable, "Korean excavations of iron armour: Political and technological implications for protohistoric East Asia", organised by Dr. Gina Barnes at the Annual Meeting of the Association for Asian Studies, Los Angeles, 25-28 March 1993. This Web version includes only the most important of the Chinese characters. Note that some of the statements made here have been superseded by later research. See my article, "The earliest use of iron in China" , soon to be published. Donald B. Wagner I was originally invited here as discussant for Dr. Dong-Suk Yoon's presentation of technical metallurgical matters. Since he is unable to attend, I shall have to base this discussion on published papers by him and others.
Early iron in China
Huang Zhanyue (1976) has shown very convincingly that the smelting of iron in China began in the south. In my forthcoming book (Wagner 1993, chapters 2-3; see also 1987a) I have reviewed Huang Zhanyue's evidence, together with other evidence which has come to light later, and suggested that the first use of iron in China was in the southern "barbarian" state of Wu in southern Jiangsu and parts of adjacent provinces. The earliest iron artefacts are from the early fifth century B.C., and artefacts which have not yet been properly published may take the use of iron in Wu back some centuries further (e.g. Zou Houben 1984).

Who Is This Guy Bill?
And other odds and ends.... What kind of writing about Japan does not include a castle? Well, here I am at Hirosaki Jo, one of the last original castles in Japan (Many of the others are replicas, rebuilt after being destroyed for various reasons, including fires that resulted from lightning strikes. This photo was taken after days of riding in the rain in Hokkaido and Northern Honshu. If you like wood, you will love the structure and construction of the Japanese Castle. A tremendous contrast to the stone castles of Europe, for sure. Japanese castles have a kind of warmth about them...at least for this hobbyist woodworker. Do try to visit one or two; they are well worth the modest entrance fee. One of my favorites is Matsumoto Jo (castle), a must see in my book! If you are touring in the area of Matsumoto, do spend an hour and tour this castle. You will not regret it! Himeji also has a must see castle... As a brief introduction, let me just say that I lived in Japan in the 70’s, that both my children were born there, and that I met my wife (who is Japanese) on the Trans-Siberian Railroad in ‘69, heading towards Europe. So I guess I am not a youngster anymore...I just act and feel like one! I hope the following short introductions to aspects of bicycle touring in Japan will be of some interest and help to fellow bicycle tourists that are thinking about seeing, feeling and enjoying the "Japanese experience." Touring in Japan is unique and special.

THE MANY ROADS TO JAPAN A Search for Identity An interactive reader for ESL students and teachers (recommended for low intermediate level and up)
From the Introduction Japanese people often ask foreigners why they came to Japan. It is not always an easy question to answer. There are many, often complicated, reasons that bring foreigners to Japan. The Many Roads to Japan tells the story of the adventures of one foreigner who had to follow many twists and turns in his life journey before finding his niche in Japan. College-aged students will find they have much in common with John Banks, the main character of this story. As with today's youth, who find themselves in a world that no longer offers them any guarantees and yet demands from them crucial decisions to be made at an early age, so it was with John Banks and his generation, who in their teenage years were also faced with making important decisions in a turbulent, changing world. The decisions made between the ages of 18 and 22 can have a strong effect on the rest of one's life and even catapult one in unimagined directions, both emotional and physical. The key event in John's life was his decision to refuse to fight in the Vietnam War. This decision launched him on a search that ultimately led him around the world and finally to Japan.
