Stone Age hunters and gatherers who make jomon (rope-patterned) pottery inhabit Japan. 660 B.C. Mythological Jimmu ("Divine Warrior"), descendant of sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami, founds empire. YAYOI (300 B.C. - A.D. 300) Rice cultivation, metalworking, and the potter's wheel are introduced from China and Korea. Era named "Yayoi" after the place in Tokyo where wheel-turned pottery was found.
In Shinto, Japan's oldest religion, people identify kami (divine forces) in nature and in such human virtues as loyalty and wisdom. 100-300: Local clans form small political units. We'll attend the Yokohama Quilt Festival and then go on to visit Arimatsu and Takayama at the peak of red maple season and be back in time for Thanksgiving!
Susan Ball Faeder was in Japan between June 28 and July 11 as one of twelve invited participants in Amy Katoh's " NIHON DAISUKI (I LOVE JAPAN) " exhibit at the Yebisu Mitsukoshi Department Store in Tokyo, from July 1-7. The artists were "foreigners" (i.e. non-Japanese) who use Japanese materials and style to create works of beauty. Susan took 5 NEW textile collages inspired by bits of old cotton remnants! She was also asked to speak about her work during the exhibit. There is a catalog from the show featuring the work of the 12 artists and she might have a few for sale.

    114. Saving Japan
A collection of essays by MIT economist Paul Krugman on the Japanese economy.
    http://web.mit.edu/krugman/www/jpage.html
A SPECIAL PAGE ON JAPAN The state of Japan is a scandal, an outrage, a reproach. It is not, at least so far, a human disaster like Indonesia or Brazil. But Japan's economic malaise is uniquely gratuitous . Sixty years after Keynes, a great nation - a country with a stable and effective government, a massive net creditor, subject to none of the constraints that lesser economies face - is operating far below its productive capacity, simply because its consumers and investors do not spend enough. That should not happen; in allowing it to happen, and to continue year after year, Japan's economic officials have subtracted value from their nation and the world as a whole on a truly heroic scale. The fault does not, however, lie merely with those officials. Japan has also been badly served by the economics profession, both in Japan and outside. The great majority of economists - including those who specialize in issues of economic stabilization and growth - seem oddly uninterested in Japan's plight, as if the failure of conventional macroeconomic policy in the world's second largest economy were a subject of merely parochial interest, with no lessons for the rest of us. Of those who do make pronouncements on Japan, many if not most have taken the easy way out: blaming the victim, absolving themselves of responsibility for proposing solutions by asserting that Japan's problems are deep, structural, beyond the reach of technical fixes. Well, maybe; but maybe not. Sometimes big problems have small causes; sometimes a simple technical fix can work miracles.

    117. Intellingua
Translation, DTP and interpreting in Japanese and English. Located in Portland, Oregon.
    http://www.intellingua.com/
Intellingua specializes in high-quality, high-volume translation of technical documents from English to Japanese (and vice-versa).
it reflects poorly on your professionalism and the quality of your offering. It needs to be just right. In fact, your translation needs to read as if it's not a translation at all. It needs to read like an original. And because translating from English to Japanese involves cultural and linguistic complexities, quality translation requires an absolute mastery of the subtleties of both languages. At Intellingua, we provide that mastery. There are more than 6,000 languages in the world. At Intellingua, we're only interested in two: Japanese and English. That means we're NOT an all-purpose translation clearing house. We don't spread ourselves thin across thousands of languages. We just do English to Japanese (and Japanese to English).
A Successful Translation Project There are three vital ingredients in a successful translation project: Language mastery internally consistent, technically accurate, on-schedule, and on-budget
    Industry knowledge
    Quality assurance
Trust We understand that choosing a translation vendor is an exercise in trust. We're dedicated to earning and maintaining that trust, and we understand that our success is based on your happiness with our service.
