JAPAN: STATEMENT OF CONCERN ABOUT JAPANESE HISTORY TEXTBOOK Signatories so far... Tell a friend 12 of the 17 bishops of Japan have sent the following appeal about the Historical Textbook
to Ms. Atsuko Toyama, Minister of Education, Science, Sports and Culture Statement of Concern about Japanese History Textbook On 3rd of April the junior high school history textbook edited by the Japanese Society for History Textbook Reform (Chairman: Mr.Kanji Nishio) was approved by the Education Ministry screening panel. This book has a number of references which condone Japan's history of invasion and colonial rule, and glorify the rule of the Emperor. The approval of such a textbook will certainly lead to the concealment, distortion and glorification of the history of invasions and atrocities committed by the Japanese Imperial Military. We are deeply worried such a situation might happen in the future. We sincerely hope that Japan will start this new century filled with new hope by constructing strong solidarity with all the peoples of Asia, regardless of nationality or race. For this, it is incumbent upon we Japanese to strive in all humility for honesty in historical interpretation in words and deeds, and thus win the trust of our fellow Asians. Based on this attitude, Japan has to review its past, reflect on it, determine not to repeat the same faults, and cooperate with other Asian countries. We will never attain all these unless we make serious efforts to make our own the viewpoint of the Asian countries which were victimized by the Japanese Military in the past.

The era when members of the Ashikaga family occupy the position of shogun is known as the Muromachi period, named after the district in Kyoto where their headquarters are located. The Ashikaga government, or bakufu , never succeeds in extending wide political control, as had their predecessors of the Kamakura era . Rivalry between contending daimyo The cultural legacy of the Ashikaga shogunate is the pervasive influence of Zen Buddhism in Japanese culture. Without Zen, such ancillary arts as the tea ceremony ( chanoyu ), flower arranging ( ikebana ), the No dance-drama, and the code of conventions and formal etiquette that characterizes modern life in Japan either would not have come into existence or would have taken very different forms from those that prevail today.

Tokyo Rising - The City since the Great Earthquake
by Edward Seidensticker ISBN: 4-8053-052-4
348 pp Translator and Japan scholar Edward Seidensticker's Tokyo Rising continues the series begun with Tokyo: Low City, High City. Beginning with the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, Seidensticker documents the relative freedom of the Taisho Period, the onset of imperialism in the 1930s, WW2, the Occupation, economic growth, up until the late 1980s, and what these periods meant to and for Tokyo. Seidensticker's work was published in the 1990, and the final section in particular makes for interesting reading with its emphasis on Japan's (and by extension Tokyo's) seeming invincibility and the decline of the West. Korea, Japan to Publish Joint History Textbook
By Chung Ah-young
Staff Reporter Women¡¯s rights organizations of Korea and Japan are planning to publish a joint women¡¯s history textbook in both countries in August in an effort to fight against history distortion in textbooks. The Korean Council for Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan said Thursday that the council¡¯s War and Women¡¯s Human Rights Center has cooperated with Japan¡¯s women and war human rights institute to correctly represent women¡¯s history of both countries in modern and contemporary history textbooks. The book, jointly made by progressive, conscientious Korean and Japanese scholars, will likely be adopted as an alternative textbook in high schools to replace the recently approved Japanese textbooks. The Japanese government on April 5 approved textbooks carrying the history distortion including Fusosha Publishing Inc., describing Tokto, the nation¡¯s easternmost territory, as islets belonging to Japan. The approval exacerbated the fury of Koreans who had already been demanding Japan rethink its interpretation of history.

    What is Rekishi Kaido?
-A Bridge to Japanese History and Culture-
"What do you know about Japan, besides the names of Japanese companies and products?"
The objective of the Rekishi Kaido project is to provide people in and outside Japan with a facility to access a wide variety of historic cultural resou rces in and around the Kansai region by designating a main route and several theme routes. Cooperation among the region's different communities is promot ed to implement the project with three goals: creating a base for transmitting information on Japanese culture; creating a new leisure area; and enhancing the quality of local communities through maximum utilization of their cul tural heritages. The main route (Ise-Asuka-Nara-Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe) involves f ive areas representing five different periods of Japanese history. The them e routes are based on local cultural heritages available in the six prefectu res in the Kansai region (Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, Nara and Wakayama), and two neighboring prefectures (Mie and Fukui).
Since the opening of the Rekishi Kaido web pages in 1994, information on the region's cultural and historical assets associated with the Rekishi Kaido project has been provided to people in and outside Japan through the Internet.
